This is a great idea to use to protect your tables too. I used this idea to cover a glass lazy susan we have on our dinner table. We have a square table and it's hard for short arms to reach things, so we got a lazy susan. Its a beautiful glass one. So I wanted to protect the glass from scratches from hot bowls or pots. I used Insulbrite as the batting and added elastic around the edge to hug the glass so it didn't move around.. it worked perfectly. I used fall fabric on one side, and Christmas print on the other, so its reversible. I disnt have a full panel, for Fall print, so I used fat quarters, and cut them into wedges. That also gave me an opportunity to quilt it, so when I wash it, it all stays together. Now to make one for every day use.

I love your bowl covers Jen you do a great job l will make some of these for gifts.

Love these. My mom had some out of plastic that were essentially the same about 50-55 years ago. I had been thinking that was a much better idea that plastic wrap. These will be so cute and I can make them to fit any bowl! They will also make great Christmas presents along with a bowl cozy or 2 or 3.

instead of cutting in notches and then trimming it down I used pinking shears and cut down to 1/4 inch. It works great and saves a tepof notching all the way around....you are a very good teacher and easy and fun to follow

Life Hack- Put a circle on cricut design space and put in the diameter on the locked mode. Then add 4 inches so two inches on each side. Then the cricut will cut out as many as you want.

Jennifer, I've discovered that when you feed elastic through the "channel" it goes easier and faster if you also slide a button onto the safety pin. Use the largest button you possibly can. One with a shank seems to work the best. The button just seems to roll through the "channel".

These are a great idea and if you want to use plastic wrap between the food and the cover you can still do that and the wrap will stay on and keep the food from staining the fabrics. This will be great for all of the pretty bowls I have that I like to use that don't have a cover.

You can use a vinyl or clear covering on top, but we didn't. We use the fleece to help insulate the dish and added it before sewing the two pieces together. Absolutely! To be sure to avoid shrinking, you should pre-wash any fabrics that you will be using before you make your project, but otherwise it is 100% washable!

We use Pilot brand FriXion pens but we are unsure if there are other iron-away pens on the market!

I wish you would make a tutorial for square and oblong sizes. I’m not sure how to make them especially reversible!

You won’t want the oil cloth in contact with the food or facing to the food as it isn’t foodsafe vinyl.

Your tutorial is great for a round bowl! What would the measurements be for covering a rectangle container like 9x9 dish?

Hi Darla, thanks for bringing up that good point. Apparently there is a food safe waterproof PUL available. For instance, Wazoodle Fabrics sells ProSoft Food Safe Waterproof PUL. I've not tried that brand and you can be sure I'll ask about this before I purchase PUL anywhere. Thanks again. We can never be too safe. :)

Okay.... I'm Sorry, but I'm very confused? First you said to sew with a 1/2 inch seam allowance because of the elastic, then you said to cut back to a 1/4 because of the elastic? You gave the same reason for doing both seam allowances? Should I just start with the 1/4 seam allowance?

what if you don't have a clear bowl ? How do you center it ?

You can measure the radius of your bowl then measure out from the center at four points (like a compass) and line your bowl up with those marks to make sure it's centered over your mark! Hopefully that is a clear explanation, but if not let me know and I will try to be more clear!

Tudah Rbah (thank you very much). I am eager to make some of these. I tried the melted beeswax and it made the fabric so stick and unappealing to my family. It is for making it leak proof, but for these covers, the beeswax is not something I would want to do anymore. Before I leave, let me tell you, the real and ancient Name of the Creator is Hayah asher Hayah (Exodus 3:13-14). Also, we are to do the 7 appointed times of Leviticus 23. AMN.

We think it definitely helps keep the fabric more stable and it holds up better to repeated use. It can also help keep food cold or hot just a bit longer :)

if you're going to trim it down to 1/4" around after you notched it, what's the point of the 1/2" seam allowance? Why not just do the 1/4" we're all used to as quilters and then notch as needed to turn? I mean, it ends up the same length anyway.

It's an extra precaution since the elastic runs through that channel- however, Jen does note that you can trim off the excess like she did. Hope this makes sense! -Michelle

I was thinking the same thing. The elastic doesn't go through the part when you sew the two parts together. The half inch is sewn after you turn it inside out for the elastic (if that makes sense).

As an alternative try using food safe vinyl for the inside lining - so much easier to keep clean

That is what I was thinking, but where do you get the food grade vinyl and does it come in iron on, or not. I love the idea of the lids and would use them a lot, but not without some sort of vinyl on it. Thanks.

I'm not even seeing when the fusible fleece is mentioned. If you are a beginner sewer and not a quilter it's not really a given that the fleece is included. I don't see any instructions that say to cut out a circle of fleece as well and it's not included in any list of materials. That's leaving out a really important step.

Hi Michelle! At the beginning of the video, at about 1:16, she shows you that you'll have a top fabric, bottom fabric, and fusible fleece. The fleece is the same size as your top and bottom fabric squares. Thanks for letting us know that that was confusing for you. Thank you for watching and for asking! The fusible fleece was a good choice for this project because we don't do a lot of quilting on it (we just sew that channel for the elastic). With the fleece, we were able to fuse one side to one of our fabrics, ensuring it doesn't move or bunch through use. Does that help answer your question? - Morgan

Sorry, no. If the goal is to just cover the food in the bowl so insects and dust doesn't contaminate the food, then one maybe two layers of fabric are all that's needed. If you are trying to keep a hot food hot, then using fleece to help insulate the bowl makes some sense. Is the fleece there to give the cover some structure? Other than those reasons, I see no practical use for the fleece. It's not a cheap fabric and it's an extra step and material that's not really needed. These covers don't help prevent liquid spills and are not air tight like using cling wrap to help preserve food. I can only see these being used at a picnic or a buffet situation to as I said, keep insects and air borne debris out of the food while it's sitting on a table. In that situation they make more sense than cling wrap which never goes back on well once peeled off and the same goes for foil. At a buffet, people will be repeatedly taking the cover off and on, so the elastic is easier to handle than plastic cling and foil. I'm not knocking the project entirely, the covers can serve a purpose, but I think the fleece is an excessive bell and whistle that isn't needed. Is it actual fleece fabric, or is it really interfacing or batting to give the cotton fabric body? Interfacing or batting are not the same thing as fleece. I have heard of iron on interfacing and have used it, and there may be iron on batting, but I have never heard of iron on fleece. I am an analytical person. When I see something like this that doesn't make sense to me and it's purpose was not explained in the process, it tends to drive me bananas until I find the reason behind it.

You are more than welcome to make these any way that suits you, of course, as with all of the videos we make, there can often be more than one way to do something correctly. The product we used was indeed a fusible fleece. It's made by Pellon, and the number on the item is 987F. It's a lightweight batting that has fusible on one side. By fusing one side of the fabric to the fleece, it gives it some body and keeps the fabric from separating. It also does add the insulation you mentioned for hot dishes. We understand the analytical side of you - we also like things to make sense! ;) -Morgan

Beware: The pen marks will reappear if the fabric gets cold, as it would in a refrigerator.
