DIY CoreXY Linear Rails upgrades for Ender 5 Pro, almost turn it into an Ender 7 for $100 (Part 1)

Ғылым және технология

If you’ve watched my previous videos, I reviewed the Ender-5 Pro and did some hardware and firmware upgrades on it. I have been using it for 7-8 months and it prints very well. If you have an Ender-5, Ender-Pro or Ender-5 Plus, you should also be quite happy with the print quality.
Earlier this year, Creality launched the Ender-6, which is their first CoreXY printer. As you can see, the Ender-6 is a CoreXY Ender-5 with an enclosure, but I think the rubber pulley wheel motion system could be improved. When you want to go CoreXY, you definitely don’t want the same rubber wheels which are used on the CR-10, Ender-5, Ender-3 and most budget 3D printers. For CoreXY, it would work better with linear rails.
I think many users also gave the same feedback to Creality, so a few months later, they launched the Ender-7, a CoreXY printer with linear rails. It also came with some other improvements like a more rigid frame, upgraded stepper motors, dual gear extruder and a newly designed hotend. It seems like it has a really nice hardware configuration. But as an Ender-5 Pro owner, I was wondering if I could just spend around $100-$150 and upgrade my Ender-5 Pro to a CoreXY with linear rails instead of spending another $730 to buy a new Ender-7.
In this video, I will try to do that and share my design. The 3D drawing is downloadable and I hope it’ll be helpful for you to understand the project and to assemble the parts. I also included all the STL files for you to 3D print the parts that you need for this upgrade and the full list of the items you need to buy for this upgrade.

    10:09 Giant Etch A Sketch lol I had heard that it was pretty doable to convert the Ender 5 to CoreXY but never looked into it. It's really nice to see the upgrade put so succinctly with the price, files, and setup all laid out. Any more succinct and you wouldn't have even made the 10 min mark lol. I just ordered my first 3d printer, taking a gamble with a Newereal T-Rex M18-S. From what I can see it's got somewhat loud fans, a no-name power supply, a fairly unique extruder and firmware setup, and of course zero community. But it's built solidly, is direct drive, and has a 310x310x400m build volume for $250, which was knocked down to $200 because I got it Amazon renewed for extra risk lol.

  • @AuroraTech

    @AuroraTech

    Wow! $200 is a awesome deal! According to the screen, the motherboard should be MKS Robin Nano, the same as a few other printers I reviewed, the Sapphire Plus, Bluer Plus and Kywoo are all using the same board, you can checkout my other videos if you want to know more about that board.

  • @Tylor_taichou

    @@AuroraTech Wow, spot on. It is the Robin Nano v1.2 from what I've seen from the few reviews out there. Seeing that board is what actually tipped me over to "must buy" cause I'd seen it often enough on your channel that I knew I was covered for any upgrades/fixes I might want/need.

    Dang, that's a clever design. And what an impressive CAD model, with color coding and everything. That surely has taken quite some time to complete. Well done guys. How was it printing with ASA on Prusa, any problems dialing in the prints? I am getting ready to start a Voron build, and plan to print the parts on my Prusa in either ASA or ABS (I haven't printed with either before). I'm really looking forward to the next installment of this series.

    Thank you so much for taking the time to share this upgrade. I recently purchased a new Ender 5 pro for £167 which I think is a bargain, it must have been old stock as it came with the 8 bit silent main board. I have added strong Z axis support arms which stiffened the bed considerably. I really want to add a second Z axis and individually controlled motor. I think to give me the most flexible upgrade path I will need to change the main board. I am considering two eight channel boards, the Spider and the Octopus. Have you looked at the Spider? Would you go dual Z or linear rails 1st?

    Amazing!! I'm impressed about the knowledge you two have!! Glad I found this channel. I am thinking about to buy a Prusa i3 mk3s and was looking for an assembly video and found yours. By the way, your explanations are by far the best I have ever seen. I have 3 Craftbot plus 3d Printers, 1 Witbox 1 printer an old BQ i3 Hephestos 1 printer. I want to add a printer that is able to do multi color prints. And the Prusa i3 mk3s together with the Prusa MMU2S this could be a good printer. Do you plan to ubgrade your Prusa printer with the MMU2S? And do you think the quality from this both together can be as good as the excellent quality from the Craftbot printers?

    Very interesting Craftbot Printers, ball screw and linear rails, looks like a CNC. I may also add a ball screw to the Ender-5 and see if that really makes any difference.
