Just a headsup, your Haimer isn' treading 0 at rest, so it probably isn't giving you a perfect zero when actuated. You have to ensure concentricity and a second adjustment to zero the dial.

Great catch. I’m using a broken probe that I had re-glued. I’ve been doing this for a while since they are so expensive and it works great. Since I obviously can’t glue them back perfect I have devised a method to “calibrate” them in such that I get relatively good results but not perfect. Again, great catch.

Great build!! I caught the spindle size, but what size servo motors/drives did you use for x,y,z. Also do you have any issues with any of the axis not being closed loop with using the masso controller? I thought about using that controller myself, but skeptical not being able to account for following errors etc. Thank you!

Congrats, an impressive creation! The three bolts pulling the column and the base together seem sturdy enough. Isn't there a too small contact surface at the tips of the two opposing black bolts pushing the column and the base apart (if I got it right)? Did you consider filling the gap to increase the contact surface?

Love the video and machine build. Would you be able to go more in depth on the flood coolant enclosure and system? Curious on how you designed the enclosure and made it coolant proof as well as how you coolant system works. Also a video devoted to just the ATC would be interesting as well. Keep up the great work guys!

What is the mix you used for the epoxy granite? Percent of epoxy to sand gravel and dust would be much appreciated.

Atc video would be amazing

For the heavy spindle head, you can use the same process as a roller garage doors that have two winded up spring that is tighten and held to the bar. It makes lifting easier for the motor and cost less and without all the heavy weights.

Hi tommy, thanks for your suggestion. Wouldn’t a spring mechanism have different counterforce at different heights though? This might cause a problem for the Z axis motor, where as the implemented method provides a very consistent counterbalance. Thoughts? Cheers, Dave

Hi (0,005 mm on 500 mm distance) or less tolerance is possible on this machine ?

Add a central lubrication system, you wanna keep all those moving stuff properly lubricated, especially with the massive weight. you can watch Macro reps video on cent lubrication. he uses CLP 100 (and pls make a video about it too :) )

Where did you get your rails and ball screws and how did you size them?

I got them from aliexpress and I sized them by calculating the anticipated forces and masses of the machine and getting something larger than the minimum needed. These are definitely an overkill for this smaller machine. Cheers, Dave

What coolant are you using and does it stink up your whole shop?

I purchased coolant from McMaster and it doesn’t “stink” up the shop per se, but it definitely fills it with odor. I make sure the ventilate the room very well regardless as to not breathe in the fumes. Hope that answers your question 😃. Cheers, Dave

🙋‍♂ Parts list please! This is just such an incredible project. 🤯💗 I would love to possibly build one. The anchors-into-epoxy-gravel system is brilliant. I'd love to at least understand what the components are that it entails. Having just each full product name along with a link and quantity, and if you could, an image, last-known-supplier name, and last-known-price, would allow us to overview really well and also be able to find each part again reliably as the specific aliexpress/baba links rotate and break. Would be really helpful as a reference. It would also combine amazingly with any CAD files you might be comfortable to release! Thank you so much!! Again, just such a brilliant device. Incredible work!

I take it back, that is probably putting too much pressure on the whole situation. Really, I'll just say: Any of the artifacts that you produced while designing the CNC, such as any of the old CAD or BOM files, would be super useful to the community!! :) just to better understand this machine. IMO it's the best example on YT of this class of machine, so it would be truly amazing to have the reference material for specifics!

mh i dont think the counterweight is the best option here, i think it would be better if you used pneumatic pistons connected to a big reservoir to counteract the weight of the z axis. One negative is, it has twice the mass and also the maximum acceleration should be 1G because otherwise the counterweight would fly and bounce back down. only my 2 cents :P

This is great input. I never considered the effect of this system on maximum acceleration so thanks for that. That being said, I didn’t way 200kg applying a torque on the column (z axis) pulling it down, which is one reason I decided to go with the counter weight. I hope that makes sense. 1 G in such a small machine Is pointless in my opinion. 2500 mm/S2 Is scary enough.

@@marson8870 it depends on what you do, thats right. If you can raise the acceleration while also holding tolerance and surface quality, it can drastically reduce the cutting time if you have small complex contours. What i personally find scarier is when the maximum velocity gets raised.

Hahah, first of all you are definitely right 😃 . I will share though that there are many websites where you can upload your DXF files and have them laser cut and shipped to you within a week, so this should not stop you from building your own CNC machine. I was resourceful and found access to water-jet cutter instead. If you want to make this at home you definitely can, but it will require lots of problem solving and thinking. It’s not an off the shelf solution. I hope you enjoyed our videos regardless. Cheers, Dave
