DIY Chicken Coop - Functional and beautiful henhouse (Part 1/2)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is our family project DIY chicken coop build. We decided to keep chickens and build our own DIY chicken coop with the whole family. This functional and beautiful henhouse is easy to clean, sturdy and practical. The chickens have two nesting boxes which can be accessed from outside, the guano can be removed via a cleaning hatch. The inside can be accessed via a chicken coop door.
Ideas for this version of our DIY chicken coop came mainly from April Wilkerson’s build ( • DIY Backyard Chicken C... ) and from this blog post by Lyanda Lynn Haupt (thetanglednest.com/2010/02/our.... Thanks to them for the inspiration!
Thanks to my partner PNZ for providing the excellent paint. You can find out more about it here: www.pnz.de/en/products-from-a... (Advertisement)

    Dear Sir, A most interesting project for those with a garden large enough to accommodate poultry. The design is nice & so is the workmanship. What's even better though is you being ale to enthuse your children to participate in your endeavours. In years to come, they'll not only will have fond memories but an appreciation for the work you did. Very well done & look forward to seeing the final outcome. Mit Freundlichen Grussen.

    Nice build Andreas & good to see the kids involved as well! I am curious as to what type of chickens you are planning on & how many this coop will hold comfortably. I think that the rule of thumb is about 3 square feet per chicken. Looking forward to the follow up videos.....

  • @holzhandwerk_ak

    Thanks Steve. The chicken at the beginning of the video is one of ours. The breed is called "Deutsche Sperber". It’s a relatively rare German breed. A school project in our town is breeding them and so we got them from there. We have three chickens, the coop has about 10.8 square feet and they only spend the night in the coop. By day they have a large area (about 200 square feet). You can check out my Instagram account (@holzhandwerk_ak) -there are some more pictures of the finished enclosure.

    Hey Andreas, great job, as always! I really like your no nonsense approach, things built on the healthy budget, but still very functional. Nice to see having kids involved. I have 5 years old girl, slowly try to bring her to garage:)) Mixed results so far, and I don't want to push too hard, but would love to have her involved at one point. What's your recipe? :)

    Thanks for your kind words, Pawel. This was the first project that my daughter really wanted to help with - before that I had tried to encourage her but she hadn’t shown much interest. This time, it was HER project, though. The chickens were her idea and she loves animals - so the “recipe” (if any) would be: wait until you can build something that SHE really wants to have or build.

  • @holzhandwerk_ak

    @holzhandwerk_ak

    Thanks Philip. It’s called resin-coated plywood - the resin layer is very resistant against moisture and very smooth so that it’s easy to clean. In Germany, this material is often used for the flooring of trailers.

    Why did you blurred your family's face? Just curious.

  • @holzhandwerk_ak

    2 жыл бұрын

    My kids are yet too young to understand what it means to have your face visible on the internet. Facial recognition technology is improving fast so some algorithm would already know them before the comprehend the full consequences. I myself made the conscious decision to show my face publicly and live with and potential consequences, they should be able to make this decision themselves once they’re old enough. So far, no pictures of them exist on the internet.
