DIY Chicken Coop - Functional and beautiful henhouse (Part 2/2)

This is part 2 of our family project DIY chicken coop build.
If you haven't seen part 1, you can watch it here: • DIY Chicken Coop - Fun...
This is our family project DIY chicken coop build. We decided to keep chickens and build our own DIY chicken coop with the whole family. This functional and beautiful henhouse is easy to clean, sturdy and practical. The chickens have two nesting boxes which can be accessed from outside, the guano can be removed via a cleaning hatch. The inside can be accessed via a chicken coop door.
Ideas for this version of our DIY chicken coop came mainly from April Wilkerson’s build ( • DIY Backyard Chicken C... ) and from this blog post by Lyanda Lynn Haupt (thetanglednest.com/2010/02/our.... Thanks to them for the inspiration!
Thanks to my partner PNZ for providing the excellent paint. You can find out more about it here: www.pnz.de/en/products-from-a... (Advertisement)

Dear Sir, Whilst I am not into poultry, I do readily admit however that your work is well thought out as far as design & use as well as it's overall construction & finish. Getting one's children to partake into the work will give them very fond memories in years to come including an appreciation for the work itself. Very well done. Kind regards.

Can you post a video for an update on how it's holding on?

  • @holzhandwerk_ak

I will probably not have time for a video but it’s holding up well so far. I’ve had to seal some of the gaps since because they harboured a lot of lice last summer. Since then we’ve also learned that we can keep out the lice by scattering ground-up diatomaceous earth (kieselgur) on the walkways of the lice, that kills them off before they can multiply too much. So all in all, the coop works wonderfully.

Was hältst du davon? Sicher hast du dir dazu auch deine Gedanken gemacht...

Danke.

I was wondering why OSB. Isn't it that it will be dempt bij rain in a short time?

  • @holzhandwerk_ak

I don’t think it will rot in a short time, the paint should protect it. You’re right that it’s not the first choice for outdoor but I had two large sheets of it from a project that I eventually didn’t build and so I decided to use them instead of buying new material. Time will tell if that was a good decision but if you watch the What I learnt video you’ll see that the paint keeps the moisture off very well.

  • @ibrazeau3044

Andreas Kalt - I understand your reasoning and I probably would have done the same if I had those materials on hand but, the OSB stands will eventually let water in even with paint. They will separate a little with time and will let water in. Also, the exposed cut parts of the sheets will absorb water and will swell and will rot. Just be prepared for that. In hindsight, I would probably have factored Tyvek and vinyl siding into the project. That would have meant additional expense. Good video and project.
