Only change I would have made: Paint the door on your marks (prior to setting each "next" chevron piece) black or white to make the chevron pattern really pop.

Mike! This is GREAT! Can you do something for exterior doors as well? The off the shelf exterior doors for sale at the box stores are trash unless you spend a small fortune. I'm trying to upgrade and haven't found a good way yet. I can't find an affordable source for clean, modern, front doors that won't break the bank and keep trying to think of an alternative.

Good project, with a few suggestions. One, a router with a flush trim bit would have made flushing up the hardboard much quicker/easier. Two, get yourself a small sprayer. It will be far quicker to use with a much cleaner final finish. And three, add an astrugal to the outside of the door to tighten up the doors and kill off light intrusion.

Do think there would be an issue with the alignment of the latching mechanism if you were to do this to both sides of the door? I’m worried that the added thickness on the side that makes contact with the frame will mean the door won’t latch closed without more adjustments.
