DIY Carbon Fibre Bike Frame Build
Time lapse video showing the process of creating the frame for my carbon fibre bike.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
UPDATE 2020:
The bike still runs and I am not dead lol.
I created a foam core model of a bike frame, I then built a very poor 2x4 fixture. I used aluminum bottom brackets, head tube, and rear dropouts for the frame. I wrapped these components in fibreglass to prevent galvanic corrosion. I then wrapped the entire frame in carbon fibre coated in epoxy. I used electrical tape, sticky side out, to compress the frame and used a baseboard heater to cure the epoxy. Cure time was about 3 days.
Hey man this was amazing! You should do a video explaining everything step by step for the mortals who only dream about doing this kind of stuff
Jeeezzz youtube needs to promote this kind of channel instead of the Kardashians, onlyfans, and other stuff that is absolutely not important. Let's promote this.
would love to see this broken down into more detailed episodes. thanks great video.
Obrigado por responder, onde posso encontrar esse material é o mesmo isopor?
Qual manta de carbono usou ,tem alguma especial indica onde comprar e qual ?.
Hello. What happened to the styrofoam inside after it was completed?
how did you prepare the head of the frame for the bearing?
did the bottom bracket come out OK, I have a aluminum frame but I was thinking of making a carbon frame for track?
awesome man
is that a foam the white thing ??
What kind of foam did you use
Fantastic! I will try a folder when I get the cash !
How many layer you used to made top tube and down tube?
how did you join the rear gear to the carbon fiber?
nice job dude. im thinking to reinforced my alloy frame with this method, is this bike strong enough ??
What is that white material that formed the skeleton n it remains in forever?
hi Gagan , thanks for you video . Could you please tell me whtat type of carbon fiber did you use and also what tipe of glue . ? thanks
Hi there I'm interested in building my own as a recumbent, so glad I found your build, looks awesome!! I realize that it's been over a year since you posted, but perhaps a follow-up video would be helpful
well played!
Nice base
can you upload the finish product im interested in making one
So first you made a Replica of the frame with Styropor, and then covered it with FiberGlass?
How much did the frame weigh afterwards?
hello I would like to know how to solve the mold of these two photos. I wish you could help me greetings from belgium
is that polystyrene youre wrapping it around?
it's awesome...congrats for new bike...but I have a question....how you cured it? did you use any vacuum pump or oven??
I had the idea of building my own road bike and my friends called me stupid now seeing this totally gives me hope even tho I'm still in high school but I definitely want to try to build my own !! I'll check out the link now and is there anyway u can help me ?? Like how to build them step by step or how to do it ?? One week is short !! I really wanna do it !!! Did u use any special equipments ??
Awesome!! You inspired me to start my own carbon fiber project because I've always wondered how they build bike frames with carbon fiber. Thanks for sharing your home built project.
How many m2 carbon fibre fabric to build entire frame?
Any update with this frame? Can we watch you ride it?
i'm worry about this frame strength and durability.. will it work only by sticking carbon sheets and resin without any molding compressing, vacuum effect and heating?
The heating should be a very low priority concern in comparison to the absence of compressing or vacuum bagging. Heat just helps minimize cure time; unless it’s prepreg; this project isn’t. Compression/vacuum eliminates air bubbles. It’ll probably be fine; but depending on how you’re riding, “probably” doesn’t always cut it.
@MAR108
It’ll be just fine, real carbon fiber bikes are made in sections and then glued together so it’s basically the same
Did the frame work? How much carbon fiber did you use and what type?
@prematureYeet
8 жыл бұрын
+TheGreatOldOak The frame works great and I used 3K twill carbon fibre, its a fairly common type of carbon fibre and is extremely conformable.
Good work! I just want to say to all you doing a build or wishing to. I'm not an advocate of aliexpress. But it'd how I bought my fiber it was all cutoffs. Its strong and was 16 bucks a meter. Resin I got local. Use epoxy olfor a frame its stronger. I used vinylester as my parts get exposed to fuel. But be does not adhere to carbon good. Honestly a fiberglass bike is a super cheap option. Check out some bike books with one offs. Some do not use vaccum just like this guy.
+Gagandeep Singh How would you remove the foam from the inside?
@Monkyman245
You could just let it be, since it wont change the weight (maybe a couple of grams), or you could pour acetone into the frame which would dissolve the foam.
Won't acetone also affect the integrity of the resin? Ive been thinking of doing exactly the same thing to build a recumbent trike. I plan on leaving the foam in there. it will add strength like a toucan beak and the weight is minimal.
does wrapping with tape helps strength
@prematureYeet
8 жыл бұрын
+matrix us Yes, you need to wrap the carbon fibre with the non-sticky side of electrical tape to squeeze out the excess epoxy, It also ensures the layers of carbon fibre stick together well. You also need to cure the bike over night at about 35 degrees C to ensure the epoxy has reached its maximum strength.
