DIY Cabinets | Skoolie Conversion Ep. 26 | Adam & Steph

Ойын-сауық

Hey guys! This week we took on a really exciting project; our kitchen cabinets! In this video, I show you how I designed and built our custom kitchen cabinets in our skoolie. Cabinetry is something I'm very interested in so I took the time to try making these cabinet carcasses the proper and professional way. Stay tuned for the drawers and cabinet faces, as well as the custom countertop I will be making in future videos!

Love how the kitchen is coming along. Thanks for sharing your foresight on putting furring strips where your upper cabinets would be placed. Very helpful. Can’t wait to see the pantry and cabinets finished.

"Rule of thumb" Table saw is good for ripping (along grain) it's tough to cross cut, because the work piece wants to bind against the fence. (kickback risk) Best to use some kind of tablesaw track slide gig. Nice job on the KREG tool. I may get one to. Thanks,. Love the build.

Another excellent video, thank you! Getting the cut list, making decisions about the dimensions and trade-offs, and fitting it into a non-standard space is exactly the kind of problem solving that causes so much worry on projects! Love your attention to detail, and it is so helpful!

🤩🤩🤩 okay, I am impressed!! Team no table saw for the win lol we definitely need to get an accucut before we start ours. Love your work. A table saw is a tool. All tools have a purpose and correct use. Small table saws are not great for cabinets. FYI, correct uses is the piece against the fence is the piece you are intending to create.

Yes, we figured ours was too small. We tried to put the good side toward the fence but it didn’t extend far enough so we tried it the other way… major fail. But glad we found an alternative tool that worked for us!

Have to say, I 1000% agree about using the table saw! They can take fingers off really quickly, even with a really dull blade, which it looks like you had in spades. There's always more then one way to cut a board, and it looks like you found a way that feels safer for you and worked really well!! And per usual of all your vids, you knocked this one out of the park. The only thing I was a little surprised about is not using the toe kick space for more drawers. I thought for sure that would've been an Adam add. I know it's down the road, but what are you thinking of using for your countertop?? Curious minds want to know!! Your build continues to look amazing. Keep up the excellent work, which seems a little easier in a nicely insulated box, even out in the cold again. And apparently the only thing that would be better yet would be a working toilet....priorities!! Great ending, BTW.

It’s funny you should mention because we actually were thinking about making the toe kicks functional drawers. It is a bit of dead space down there but these cabinets are so massive I don’t know if we’ll possibly need anymore storage space. Especially once all the cabinets are said and done. We like to live by the thought of - the less space to put things, the less junk we’ll have. We initially wanted butcher block countertops, but since it’s such a deep kitchen, we would have had to fork out a lot of cash for something we can buy off the shelf. So we’re going to try to DIY some sort of wood countertop! Randy’s such a funny guy. He always comes in with the one liners and we’re always happy to catch some of them on camera. You’ll see him in a lot of our earlier videos. Now that it’s summer time and we’re back in our backyard, we’re sure he’ll make a lot more appearances again! Randy’s our neighbour 😂

@@AdamandAtlas true story, cabinets are like water and rise to their own level. Less space to fill, less space filled. Here's a thought for countertops. Plywood strips glued together layer side up and epoxied to seal. I saw somebody do that and the look is pretty amazing. The way you two figure things out, I know you could kill that look. Randy cameos are classic! He def needs to hang around more.

Every cut you make "compromises" the wood, BUT the stress you put on those middle pieces is parallel to the weakpoint and thus won't be an issue. Think of it this way. If you make a groove in wood and then try to break it, you will do so by exerting a force perpendicular to that groove because it will break easier. Those middle pieces have the exact opposite, so it wont break easily even with the thinner part
