DIY Bridgerton Dress - With Pattern - Paneled Skirt - Regency Gown

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Hello Everyone,
In this video I will be sharing my process for how to make a Bridgerton inspired gown!
Now this video is kind of part two, to my previous video where I made a pink dress. Both dresses share the same pattern, which can be found in my Etsy Shop, KittyJBerry.
Pattern: www.etsy.com/KittyJBerry/list...
The pattern features, 1 bodice style, complete with double darts and puffed sleeves, and two skirt variations. The pink dress has a full circle skirt, whereas this purple dress has a paneled skirt.
While the circle skirt has lots of volume and drama, the skirt made from panels is a little more historically accurate. This paneled version is also able to made from fabric with directional prints, or fabric with a narrower width. Please check out my previous video to see the other variation for this dress pattern.

I love that you make allowances for preferred seam finishing methods, etc. Even though I've been sewing for years, this gown marks my first time sewing a garment for another person, and of course I chose a slippery silk blend for the outer fabric (I know...). I am so happy to hear you enjoyed this video! I completely understand your torment, working with a slippy fabric can be brutal and fussy! I hope the dress fits your lucky friend very well! An easy way to slightly fit it could be by changing the back closure, you could make it lace-up for a little more room, buttons to take it in, or the zipper for as it. I'll keep my fingers crossed for the fitting!!

    I couldn't say, I have never tested this. You could lay the pattern piece out and mark it with pins or chalk and see if you can get both to fit. I would also check the waist line measurement. The two things to consider is getting enough skirt to go around the bodice, and if it can fit on 2.5 meters of fabric. I think 2.5 won't be enough, especialy if you're cutting the bodice pieces and sleeves from the solid fabric. Maybe 3 or 3.5 meters would be enough? but this is only a guess, I can't say for sure. Check the measurements and Lay the pattern pieces out and see if you can tetris it to fit. Good Luck!

    Hi. Loving that you have provided us with a classic Regency gown with a nice snug underbust, rather than the loosish ones found in the big 3 commercial patterns. One question though- . There are no grain line marks, but aside from the side skirt, they are fairly intuitive. It seems that you have laid the side skirt with a centre grain line, though I have seen side skirts cut with the front seam as the grain. What are your thoughts here?

  • @KittyJBerry

    @KittyJBerry

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi There, Thanks for your thoughtful comment! A nice fitted under-bust was exactly what I wanted for this dress! I cut all my skirt pieces with a center grain line, i feel like that way you have more of the skirt on the center grain, as well as the upper part of the skirt, and it should help prevent warping. I'm sure you could cut the front seam on the grain, it may add additional stability to this edge if you feel it is needed, of course then you have to consider how much else is out on the bias, and how this might cause strain to the waist edge? This could be something to experiment with for sure. But for myself I put the center on the grain, I feel like it keeps things pretty simple. I hope that makes sense.

  • @KittyJBerry

    Thanks so much for trying my pattern, I hope it works well for you and your daughter :). Yes I think it is possible to add a lace layer ontop of the satin. I think that would be very pretty, and there are many dresses in Bridgerton that have this, you could look at the TV show for inspiration. If you decide to add lace I would be sure to baste the darts before machine stitching (this will make sure the lace layer and satin layer are lined up together perfectly) I would also sew the lace skirt separate from the satin skirt and then baste the top edges together. (This will give the skirt lots of movement by have the layers separate) You may also wish to finish the lace seams with a french seam. I hope this helps and good luck to you!

    Hello, two questions: 1 - for the center back panel where you put a slit to make it easier to put on, does that part stay open or do you add a zipper or something to allow it to close. I have buttons up the back but nothing for the slit. 2 - I have the skirt cut out but there is a sharp line where the train back meets the side panel, I don't know how to finish the train because it doesn't line up in a smooth circle, I made sure to cute the train extension on all pieces. what should I do? Thanks!

  • @KittyJBerry

    @KittyJBerry

    6 ай бұрын

    Hi there, I will do my best to answer your questions here, but if any clarification is needed you can message me on Etsy too :) For the slit in the center back, I only cut mine a small amount, about 10 to 20 cm max. Then i finished the raw edges with binding. I did not add a closure to the slit portion of the back of my dress. I only added buttons to the bodice portion. You can add buttons here if you like - or a zipper - you might also want to try a hook and eye or ties. Or you can leave the slit open. The dress has so much fullness at the back that the slit is well hidden, and the pleats you can place at the back will help cover it. While this purple dress only has buttons on the bodice, my pink dress has a zipper from the bottom of the slit to the top of my bodice. So you might also consider a zipper for the dress too. For the second question, I'm having a hard time understanding the issue, but I think if the skirt pieces are already cut out you might have to make due - You can try cutting the bottom edge of the the skirt back piece, to gently grade the bottom edge into the skirt side piece. Trimming the edges smooth might be the best option. You can use pins or chalk to mark where you think you want to cut it, try it on to double check, then cut and hem the bottom edge or add binding. Some portion of the skirt side is cut on the bias and this could stretch a bit - but again since I can't see it I can't exactly see what's going on. I hope this helps!

  • @KittyJBerry

    @KittyJBerry

    Жыл бұрын

    Hi there, i completely removed the zipper from the back of my bodice. There are only the four buttons that i have put on the back of the bodice. If you go to the 20:10 mark on this video I think you can clearly see the back of the dress. There are four buttons just on the bodice, not on the skirt. The center back of the skirt is where I cut the small slit and bound the edges with binding. This portion doesn't have buttons or zipper, it's free, The bodice helps the skirt overlap itself and so that tiny opening is well hidden. Even if there was a peek it wouldn't show much since I made the center back cut so small. You could opt to add buttons on the skirt portion if you like, but I find there is no need, and i like the look of just the buttons on the bodice. I hope this answers your question!

    Is it necessary to use a cotton interlining? Will it effect the dress if I don’t use it?

  • @KittyJBerry

    @KittyJBerry

    Жыл бұрын

    For the Cotton interlining layer - while it is not 100% necessary - I do highly recommend using it. Some fabric choices, like cotton, can work fine without the interlining layer, but for other fabrics, like satin, it can help prevent warping. Since some of the pattern pieces of the bodice have rounded cut edges this means they have a tendency to 'grow / stretch / warp' especially as you are sewing and handling it. I think the neckline in particular can be a tricky spot. So by backing your fashion fabric with the cotton it can help prevent any extra warping along the curved edges. The interlining also helps keep the darts well shaped, and prevents the darts from becoming warped. Finally, the interlining helps add a little body to the bodice, and if you intend to add lots of trim, or a heavy skirt - the interlining will help support the bodice.

  • @KittyJBerry

    @KittyJBerry

    I like to sew the lace layer separately , that way they twirl independently and nicely. I sew the under layer and lace layer separate and then baste the waist edges to one another. I do however layer the lace layer ontop of the bodice pieces and then sew. This prevents weird shifting of the lace and the seams of the lace from showing.

  • @KittyJBerry

    @KittyJBerry

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi There, I will do my best to answer your question, but I am a little confused by it, and having a hard time understanding your question. For the skirt back of the paneled dress the first thing you should decide is if you want the wider or narrower back pieces, and then you should decide if you want the back of your dress to have a train or not. The kind of fabric you are using will help you decide to cut the skirt back narrow or wide. Thicker fabric will be more difficult to pleat, and the pleats can be quite bulky so I recommend cutting it narrow. The width of your fabric may also help you decide, and you can adjust the back pattern piece to fit on your fabric's width. Basically if you cut the back panel of the skirt wider you will have more fabric to pleat up to fit the back of the bodice. A wider back panel means more volume, but in some situations you may prefer narrow. The measurements marked on the pattern should correspond to the line marked for the skirt size. This line can be fudged a little, because the back of the skirt is condensed with pleats or gathers to fit the bodice. I hope this explanation helps.

  • @hector66381

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hello thank you for your explanation but im still not quite understanding .The skirt back has the “ cut along corresponding size for a narrow back panel of skirt” with the measurements right below it. I’m intending to do a narrow panel so do I cut along the 32” line?

    Also how many cm is the slit on the back panel ?

  • @KittyJBerry

    @KittyJBerry

    2 жыл бұрын

    When looking at the pattern piece for the back of the skirt - the left side has a half circle in grey - this is the side that should be placed on the fold of your fabric - this side will always be on the fold. So the left side of the back of skirt is the fold side. You will be cutting the right side. There are two sections of cut lines. The first section of cut lines are the ones indicated by the measurement. If you cut along a measurement line this will create a narrow skirt back - meaning you can use less fabric and there is less to gather to the back of the dress. The second section of cut lines is all the way to the right. This would be to cut one full width of fabric for the back portion of your dress. This means more volume. But it is only one cut line - which is about one full width of fabric. So if you want size 32 for back skirt panel. lay your pattern on the fabric. The fold edge of the pattern on the fold edge of fabric and cut along size 32. If you want the wide back - place fold edge on fold edge and cut along line indicated ' cut here for a fuller back'

    0:53 there's a difference between "go to my etsy and DOWNLOAD my pattern" and "go to my etsy and BUY my pattern"...

    I'm so mad at myself right now, I accidentally cut the side panels identical instead of mirrored 😬 so one side doesn't connect correctly. 😣😣

    Oh no!!! Can you try recutting the side panels? If you don't have enough fabric to re-cut them entirely, you can try folding the pattern down the center and folding away a few inches- to make the side panel pattern piece narrower. If you can adjust the pattern so that it is narrower you may be able to re-cut your side panels from your original side panels. Like squeeze new side panels from the old ones, to help save fabric. Your dress may end up being a little less full but the skirt will have the right shape :) I hope this helps!! Good luck to you!

    I need help. I measured my bust and underbust. I’m 36 bust and 32 underbust. I made the bodice. It sits way too high above my boobs

    Did you cut out size labeled 36? If you want the bodice very fitted you can test size 34. Make sure you followed the correct lines- sometimes it gets confusing following the lines. If necessary you can tweak the bodice, like lengthening the straps to help is sit lower. If you’re still struggling you can try sending some photos on Etsy and I’ll take a look.
