I Sewed myself the Strawberry Dress (But Made it Regency) | Red Dress from Emma 2020 | VA Mesh Dress
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
In this video, I draft a regency dress pattern using the draping method on a home made dress form, digitize the embroidery on computer software, stitch it out on an embroidery machine using dissolvable interfacing/stabilizer, then sew up the dress. I also show the undergarments involved with traditional regency dress. I also partake in a photoshoot with some very talented artists.

I've only watched a few minutes but I just love the idea of a regency lady looking bored and saying, "Roses? For spring? Groundbreaking".

I love that you added a personal touch and pulled from pop culture at the same time as a historical garment. Past meets present in the most gorgeous way!

@@Sewstine i totally agree. They remind me of spring, and magical tea parties in the yard with childhood friends.
I’m not a fan of Regency women’s fashion, usually, but this is gorgeous! I vastly prefer this to the other strawberry dress. The clothing you make is nothing short of spectacular.

Thank you!! I confess, regency is probably one of my least favorite periods myself - but this particular dress and all the ones from Emma 2020 are turning me around on it!
I just love how you didn't want to put roses on this dress but you actually ended up putting "roses" on it. Strawberries are part if the rosacea family (rose family). I love this! :)
Christine: digitize the embroideries, draped the patterns, babysat the machine, sewed the dress Also Christine: Here is the whole team of makers that made this happen THIS is why you're one of my favorite KZreadrs. It's a joy to watch you do what you love :)

*sigh* Thank you .... you just re-created my own personal white whale. I never thought I would see this anywhere outside of the V&A. It looks gorgeous on you and kudos to the embroidery. If I ever get the funds to re-create my version of it, I will be embroidering strawberries and strawberry blossoms, as per your inspiration. Well done, Christine. Really well done!!!

@@Sewstine Oh absolutely. It was like everything else stepped way back and there was only this dress and me. It has been such a long time. I already felt tickled when I saw the repro in Emma but it wasn't the same. Watching you recreating it was way better, all the thought and inspiration that went into your creation. Wonderful!!!
Im not a fan of regency but dang. This is glorious. For me its the embroidery that makes it. But then, I'm a sucker for more embroidery. I wish I did more work on my own clothing but Im always held back buy worrying about making it so I'm not willing to match a piece with as many things. I have so many hang ups on what Im willing to match with what. Not a problem with a dress though. Anyway, thank you for sharing your project and making an amazing video to show off the process and that dress!
This dress is gorgeous! I'm not huge on regency-era fashions but I'm obsessed with this

I actually first saw this dress (the original) on Pinterest, and it had no caption. I automatically assumed it was Gilded/Titanic age. That’s what it really reminds me of.
Gorgeous dress. In some lights it looks like a deep pink and in others red. I love how you break down the steps in making the dress and what all goes into it. I enjoy your videos very much.

Dissolvable interfacing! Such a world we live in:)
The dress is very deceiving as it appears simple until one notices the beauty of the fabric and the intricacies of the embroidery. Truly lovely.
I'm usually not into regency styles but I now want to mix this idea and Rachel's Halloween strawberry dress. Such a cute dress with pumpkins and bats and little bones, the high waistline could even play off of a certain vampire aesthetic too! I want one in every color😍 I'll wait til my skill level is a bit higher tho😅 I'm trying to teach myself how to do embroidery at the moment :D
I love this, the texture of the fabric is so pretty with the embroidery (also, I'm still kind of mind blown by dissolvable interfacing haha). And I love what you added about getting professional pictures done because it definitely shows a lot more detail and kind of brings the projects to life more in photos. Beautiful work!

I love how you approach a project, it's like shadowing a seasoned seamstress transported to the present day-- you're so skilled , and so straightforward in seeking out the most direct way of achieving the historical effects you want, which is nice, because the focus is on the most beautiful aspects of the finished piece. It's really helpful to see someone saying unambiguously that they hate making undergarments. It just increases the likelihood of me starting to cut out more patterns, and make a design I'm excited about a reality, rather than cajoling myself into an enthusiasm I don't feel for less essential processes. (Though I absolutely get the calming aspect of sewing by hand-- this is just a personal gripe.) I often speculate what a 1540s tailor might have done with, say, the synthetics now seen as cheap and ugly, and try to look at new materials with a fresh eye-- I think it's only occasionally you see someone who makes something really transcendent, like Iris van Herpen, that lives up to the potential of the methods and materials available today. So anyway, thanks for your blog and your channel, they're both practically helpful and genuinely inspiring.

Thank you so much Marta! I am very honest about how I don't like making things that go underneath and won't show. I really do only have so much free time and would rather spend that time doing my favorite parts of each project. (That being said, I do love making men's shirts; not sure what that's about). But yes! Please do treat yourself to the parts that you enjoy doing! I had to look up Iris van Herpen - she is spectacular. Thank you for sharing!
Elspeth and Gideon are just melting into those scritches. The dress is a work of art, fabulous.

I'm only three minutes in but tldr, new subscriber. The algorithm put this on my feed and I saw "strawberry dress" and "regency" and clicked immediately. I looked away during the intro and heard you call Elspeth and thought, "the plainswalker? Nah." And then you introduced Gideon and flashed the card and now I'm a fan forever.
this woman and her work and videos fill me with an incredible sense of peace
I love - That dress - The attention to detail - The incredible amount of experience with sewing you share with us - That look on your face, when Malorie Harris lets you inspect the hair do, after before you being like "I hide away all my hair and put on these cheapo fake-pieces" :D You're incredible.

Seeing how happy you are in your pieces is amazing.
You are one of a few i've seen who put a distinctive spin on the strawberry dress rather than just trying to remake it as it originally was. I love that creativity
That is so gorgeous! You look absolutely amazing, that dress is... Just.... Stunning.. Don't have words. You make it seem so easy and effortless (though I'm sure a lot of effort went into making this!). I think it's absolutely incredible that you are a mom, work in the medical field, during a raging pandemic, without childcare, and yet still manage to make something so stunning, and even let us share in the wonder. You are an amazing person!
Friend, I am so glad that you celebrated yourself and your hard work with a photo-shoot. You looked radiant! As a fellow sewist (quilter) no one knows how much you put into your pieces--time, money, the energy! just to work through it while the littles are running around. I admire your craft!
Elspeth and Gideon?! Good white puppers?!?! I AM IN LOVE.
Wow I love the embroidery. And the drawstrings are so clever. I guess I never thought about how they got gathered cuffs without elastic!! And you are absolutely right, the photos are 100% worth it. Thanks for sharing!
Gorgeous! Digitizing is fun. I have been doing it for a year and have so much more to learn.
I was in tears as I watched you and your expressions while she helped you get made up and get dressed....you look so lovely and so happy... almost as if you were a bride getting ready for her wedding actually. Thank you so much for sharing the whole process especially including getting dressed and the photo shoot. I REALLY enjoyed this video. Beautiful 🥰
14:42 you look a bit like a teenager in this shot. The Regency silhouette makes you look even more petite. Ps also can I just add that the dress looks gorgeous on you and its a work of art.

Once a year I get that Jane Austen fever again, and this video reaallyy made me want to finally make some stays from the period. It all looks so graceful and can I say the dress is so beautiful!
My family does embroidery and watching those machines can get tiring for sure! I just got into this type of fashion and you're the first youtuber I've seen to digitize it and everything, it's so cool.
Now THAT is a strawberry dress I can get with. I personally find that the original isn’t my jam-too overdone and really not my taste (subtle puns intended). I literally cannot resist embroidery. Beautiful dress! 🍓
Digitizing is like Latex for logicians (my field)-- it's so necessary but no one gives you credit for it. Thanks so much for a much-needed resource.
Your strawberry version is gorgeous!🤗💚
Elspeth is gorgeous...those eyes! Nooo...you’ve got 2 beautiful dogs!
Love this rendition of the strawberry dress!!! Watching all your amazing embroidery always kindles my crazy ideas of making historical Russian dresses... You are exceptional talented!!
The sewtube reccommendations on the side of this video *way too excited*
The only thing I have ever sewn was an apron in middle school. But seeing beautiful things like this (and seeing Bernadette and Rachel), it really makes me want to give it a try. Maybe when I have enough money for materials 😅
Regency fashion AND MtG references??? Iconic.
one of the prettiest dresses ever, videos like this fuel my dreams and hopes to be a designer! love it
I noticed that most the ladies doing the photo shoot had long dresses on too. Dress envy? XD I love how you used high tech methods to get a vintage reproduction dress.
Gorgeous embroidery and gown. Just want to say that every period costume 1. Your work is gorgeous. 2. You look happy. 3. It looks like you've stepped out of a portrait from the period. 4. I have embroidery envy which is a good thing.
Yes! Get yourself a whole hype team! I loved watching all the women be so enamored!

Will you open a costume museum someday? You are very honest and I appreciate the door into this royal world you create. Human talent is universal. Try other cultural textile legacies as well beyond Western.
Wow so happy to see I’m not the only person who’s pets are named after magic cards 💕
I saw someone share a photo of you making this and I couldn't remember your channel name to look it up, but I knew whenever the video came out it would eventually show up on my recommended feed and it just did! So glad, I've been looking forward to seeing this project since then
Ok so I didn't know you had an embroidery machine and my brain immediately assumes hand embroidery, so I had a minor heart attack when you said you'd embroidered all of that - can you imagine how long that would take?! Your dress is absolutely beautiful, it looks beautiful on you and you look beautiful in it. It's just... Ridiculously pretty. I love it.
Is there anything you can’t do? You’re so talented!
What an elegant and striking dress. 🙂you are so clever and skilled!
This strawberry dress should also go viral! :) It's absolutely beautiful, so flowy and elegant. What a dream! You look gorgeous in the photo. Thank you so much for sharing your process. It is indeed a labor of love. -Emrys
All I can say is wow 😍😩😳 the team you worked with on the photos and makeup/hair really brought your work to life before our eyes. Such an amazing way to show different types of art in one. 💕
I love the soft flowy silhouette of regency AND i also love embroidery and pretty fruits!! this is so lovely what a great combination of aesthetics!!
Ahhhh, love the fact that your dog is named after an MtG card/character!!!
I have strawberry envy😍
Wow, I've never even heard of dissolvable interfacing! There's always so much useful info in sewstine videos
This is so beautifully and skillfully made! Bravo!
I'm not that big of a fan of Regency dresses but seeing the details and your excitement is lovely🥰🍓
I am a recent subscriber and am enjoying going through your channel. I LOVE digitizing and enjoy making historical costumes. My embroidery is done on a combination sewing and embroidery machine so is a lot slower than yours. Not sure if I would attempt the court clothing but this dress is tempting. Thank you for your descriptions of both historical and modern methods.
Actually, corset is the appropriate term for regency short stays because it went away from the heavily structured and boned stays of the 18th century and instead opted for a more form fitting type of stays that got the name corset because of the French word for body because these hugged closely to the body, so you’re not wrong calling it a corset!
regency fashion is my favourite!!

I do want to make this someday for mysef and this video gave me some great ideas and advice on construction. and I absolutley love that you added the strawberries :)
I am so inspired by your enthusiasm for your costumes I’ve always loved costumes and I never thought that it would be some thing that I should pursue. I’m practical to a fault, I think to myself well where would I wear it ? what would I do with it afterwards? but watching you get so much joy out of the process and then having photos done with it makes me think that maybe I should be spending some more time pursuing the idea of just dressing up for the sake of it .
During this lock down I have had a scant handful of over the moon touchstones. I thank you for this one. I cried. Such beauty and perfection. I think I will watch it 2 more times at least. Sending genuine heartfelt gratitude.
