DIY Big Green Egg Table | Part 1

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This video is about how to build your own DIY Big Green Egg Table. This table also fits a Classic Joe Kamado Joe with the details shown in the plans below. I also now have the same plans available for XL Big Green Eggs and Big Joe Kamado Joe Smokers.

You can find more pictures and details for this grill table plans for both LARGE and XL sizes at: www.searedandsmoked.com/diy-b...

This big green egg table is constructed out of Cedar wood, which holds up well over time in the outdoors. The cedar countertop is sealed to with exterior grade sealer to make it easy to wipe down after use. If you want to keep it dry when not in use, I would buy a large grill cover.

    I'm no carpenter but this design appears to have many pieces held together by screwing into the end grain. Have you considered maybe hardwood plugs? I've always heard this was a big no-no.

    The moment I saw this I knew it was the one to build. The sole reason is because of the opening to slip the BGE in to the unit rather than an open hole, like you see on most tables. Your choice of cedar is great as this should last a life time. Thanks for posting this and wish me luck on this DIY project! Why anyone would dislike this table is beyond reason.

    I really like this. I might try to make it for my WSM smoker since right now I have no worksurfaces when I am grilling/smoking. I need a removable middle shelf it can sit on since the WSM can double as a regular kettle grill or a bullet smoker. No one has plans for WSM from my googling. Only the eggs.

    For the WSM, I would probably do something similar to this, except remove the shelf in the middle, and add some granite below or line everything in the center with aluminum / steel for fire protection.

I'am thinking now of putting some 18" porcelain title on top

    I've grilled on a gas grill for most of my life, and as I have become more into grilling, the gas grill seems limited. I'm researching all that there is to do with charcoal, and love your grill table. Curious with the heat coming off of the grill, any worry about (fire) in general? Also could this be configured to fot a standard weber gas grill?(Not holding you to your word, just in your opinion) Looking forward to seeing all that your site offers. Thanks

    Hi Joseph... I have not had any issues with fire in the past and the wood surfaces. This is my second grill cart/island I have built and it has been fine so far. The main thing is to make sure there is a little space between the green egg and the wood... as the heat can wear and tear on the wood. Weber does not make a built in gas grill that would work well with this setup... as their built in grills are full height. But there are a bunch of other brands that make grills that would work. You just would want to buy one that has the option to purchase the insulated heat shield that mounts to the cabinet, and then the grill mounts on that. Gas grills like those are pretty pricy... so it might not be worth doing that point. If you like webers, there are a bunch of people that have mounted kettle charcoal grills in grill tables like this.

    Ah this is amazing I really want to try and do it but would need to modify it a bit. I only have about 7 feet of usable space so it would need to be scaled down a bit. Would the opening work for a pitboss kamado? I’m ready to buy the plans I’m thinking not using cedar but just pine and I want to tile the counter top.

  • @Searedandsmoked

    @Searedandsmoked

    Just looking at the pit bosses... and I think it would generally work. You would probably want to buy the XL Egg size plan, that way you should have plenty of room. Other than that, I would have the pit boss on hand before building the table, so you can double check the dimensions of the opening for the grill.

    Any issues with the bottom span 2x4 warping downwards from the weight? Planning a similar 8’ version and wondering if those four central (vertical) 2x4s would be better going all the way through and sitting on casters as well

  • @Searedandsmoked

    @Searedandsmoked

    5 жыл бұрын

    Hi Jon... the table has held up well so far. No issues with the sagging, but you could add casters in the middle, even with out running the 2x4's all the way down. You could just double up the horizontal 2x4's and then add some blocking under them. You could also change out the 2x4's for 2x6's for the horizontal pieces to minimize potential sagging. That said... it's been good so far.

    it has held up really well. definitely do what you feel is best, but the 2x4s have held up well for my own setup with the large Egg. I did use Cedar for everything, which holds its form better than pine. you can use 2x6 for the bottom frame if you want to beef it up more (which I used for the XL egg table design)

  • @Searedandsmoked

    @Searedandsmoked

    If you build the table for the XL green egg, it should accommodate the Grilla Kong. The kong is a little smaller, so it should work fine. Just double check the height for the shelf it sits on, relative to the counter before building that part and you should be OK. So... any plan set on my site that says XL Kamado should be an OK starting point.

    I am building something like this for my Big Joe. Most commercial tables have a circular hole in the top of the table which creates a front rim, and I see your design choice left the front of the egg exposed without such a rim. Can I ask what led you in that direction, and post construction do you like it or wish in hindsight that you used the drop in hole design?

  • @Searedandsmoked

    @Searedandsmoked

    5 жыл бұрын

    Scott Watkins hi there, so functionally i like the front open for a few reasons. It is easier to reach in and clean things out, as you do not have to reach as far. And it’s easier to set in place. These eggs are heavy and lowering them down through the hole can be a challenge. And lifting up even more difficult. I also had a bbq guru that would have been tough to attach to the egg if it were set too far back.

    I probably would beef up the vertical supports that you hang the shelf on by inserting 2 more 2x4s. One on each side centered, so you have one more spot to attach the shelf too. The only other thing I would think about doing is beefing up the main outside framing on the bottom... Possibly doubling up the 2x4s for the two main "beams" that stretch the entire 7 ft span.

    Where in the world did you find that good cedar? I traveled to Five home improvement stores just to find 16 shitty cedar 2x4s .. if you went to Lowe’s ... our Lowe’s in my area only has rough sawn 2x4s that look like they were cut for a bow and arrow

  • @Searedandsmoked

    @Searedandsmoked

    3 жыл бұрын

    For this one, I just screwed them down, trying to keep the boards tight. If have done one with biscuits and glue. If you want a water tight table that is not too expensive, I would go that way. The other option is to build it out of 3/4" plywood, and then wrap it in Galvanized sheet metal. I have seen that done. If you want to spend more, then granite or soap stone is good.

    so, you can keep it as simple as you want or make it more complex for a more refined finished product. If you look at the different videos I have done, some I have simply screwed individual boards to the framing, making them as tight as possible to one another. Or... you can glue up a larger panel, then attach it as one piece to the framing. It really just depends how waterproof you want it on the interior.

    You could do something similar using cedar fence pickets. They're only 5/8" thick vs 1 1/2" but you could double them up in certain areas to create lap joints using Titebond 3. It would save a substantial amount of money w/o sacrificing much in terms of strength

    If it is not under a covered area, I would recommend covering with a grill cover. The wood will hold up alright, but the finish will fade and look bad pretty quick. The doors do not react well to a tone of moisture either. After I stopped using my original, I left it uncovered and the doors were the main thing that did not function great after some exposure. Amazon has some pretty cheap larger covers.

    Hi Harry, send me an email if needed. My email is in the instructions. You just want to attach a piece of cedar to cover the 2x4 backing. You want the cedar to overhang the 2x4 backing, as it will make the door install difficult. You just want the cedar to be flush with the 2x4 edge. Hope that helps!
