DIY Ambient machine and OP-1

Музыка

DIY ambient machine is amplified by two piezoelectric sensors inside the wood box (no power supply needed). I've used old bass strings and springs. Also I've added a button to stop the sound and volume pot.
Teenage Engineering OP-1 is just used to add some effects.
The idea is based on the luminist garden but much simpler: folktek.com/instruments/electr...
If you have any questions just ask ;)

    Making one of these boxes is dead simple. Drill holes and insert screws, then wind guitar strings around 'em. (Front of box.) Screw down some springs. (Middle of box.) Wind stiff wires (metal costhangers, cut, or paperclips, cut) around more screws. (Test of box.) On the underside of the box mount a contact microphone (piezo) near each screw or bolt. Beeswax works best for assuring firm contact twixt the mic and the wood of the box. Then all you need is an audio effects unit like the one used in the video. You'll need to amplify the signals from the contact mics, do you'll need a mixer with mic inputs twixt the box and the audio delay unit.

    It would be down to your preference. As a Percussionist, I would certainly say no. Tone Wood is ideal. Metal, especially with the already Kalimbaesque Timbres... would be harsh & cold. The Wood is a nice balancing influence. But it's all a matter of what you want. Think of striking a metal trash can with a rubber mallet... vs. striking a hollow wooden crate.

    Hi! Thanks for your great video and inspiration. I have an OP-1 too, and I'm building a wooden case for it at the moment. This will be my next DIY project for sure. Is your button "off" when it's pressed down and "on" when it idle? So it's this the way it mutes the sound when pressed. I'm also considering between one/two piezos, how have you connected the two? Same connections from both piezos?

  • @Efimer

    @Efimer

    6 жыл бұрын

    Hi, yes the push button is normally closed so when I press it, it mutes the output. I would try just with one piezo as big as you can find, there are some with 5cm diameter that will provide good volume. I'm sure it would work better than having two piezos as my box, I think they were in series but I can't remember for sure. I'm sure the op-1 box looks cool in wood ;)

  • @kotpii

    @kotpii

    6 жыл бұрын

    Thanks! This is exactly that kind of crazy thing I bought my OP for. I'll have to go and look for a closed button, I guess they are usually open ones and close when pressed. I also thought of connecting one piezo directly to 3,5mm jack. Then you can record your own heartbeat or whatever you can think of.

  • @kotpii

    It's the other way around, I wanted to build it to make some atmospheric sounds and later I decided to make the video. You can get much useful sounds connecting it to some pedals, I think of this more as a very basic example.

    @@Trtlman no, but I've been so busy with the product website that I haven't just played anything. In this video I used a similar box with piezos to make the rhythm/metal sounds: kzread.info/dash/bejne/a2aErrdslqTRaJM.html

    Wish I would have seen this before I built mine. I like that wooden box. I went with an aluminum one.

    Wouldn't it be easier to have the box and the piezos separated? I mean, build the piezos as a mic (or input device, with the pots and buttons) and then you build as many boxes as you want without having to deal with electronics; then you just switch your input between boxes. It could be easier and cheaper I think. Anyway, a nice idea I'm copying for sure.

    You could build just one circuit and different boxes but the piezos need to be always in contact as much as possible with the box to have good volume so in that case maybe you would need to pre-amplify the signal of the piezos. Anyway the cost is so low (about $10-20 total cost) that I liked the idea of having a "stand-alone instrument" that doesn't need anything else to work. Btw what you say would work perfectly attaching that pre-amplified device to anything, maybe I'll try that too at some moment ;)
