Greetings from Texas. It's ok to be from N.Y. lol. When I started out in the sign business over 40 years ago I layed out my art work just like you did your elk. Well that took a very long time to transfer to the surface I was going to paint. I scratched my head long enough to finally came up with a faster solution. Do a line drawing or down load one and print it out on a "transparentcy sheet and use an overhead projector. Saves hours of time.

Don"t need a projector. Just put the tracing paper in a picture frame or similar, set it upright, put a bright light behind it and trace the shadow from the lines onto the plywood... Great idea for a full size target dude. Thanks to your idea I"ll be making several of deer, turkey, elk, etc! Thanks!

Nice target. I'm going to do something similar for a moose target. Just in case no one has passed this on to you yet... You can take a photo from the web (like you did), cut and paste it into your software (Publisher, for example), then print it out in tiles. You specify the dimensions, and it will print multiple sheets of paper to be pieced together like a puzzle, to achieve those dimensions. Assemble and fix them on your background, then cut or paint as you choose, then dispose of them. No tracing necessary. I've also projected an image onto my background and then painted using the projection as a color guide. I have made bear and deer targets that way. Works great.

The big idea is always simple but the knowledge earned him gold, practice!

Very cool, and great instruction. An old school overhead projector also works well.

One tip for the bale backstop - I noticed you've got square straw bales in a grid and then run a tie-down strap around them. This works if you can get the strap(s) tight enough, but in this case you aren't shooting at the whole grid. It's much easier to take bales slightly larger than your target area itself and strap them down as tight as you can, then add uncompressed bales around them and strap the whole thing. The loose bales will fill in around the center target so you don't have gaps but the target area will be much more compact, keeping your arrows (and what's beyond) safe.

Thanks for sharing this video. I've found myself in the same situation as you. Being from Michigan we really don't get a chance to see LIVE Elk in the woods unless we travel well to the north of the state. Took your idea and created a target size Elk for my Colorado Elk this fall.

Awesome man! Me and my wife just got into bow hunting this year and we are scouring youtube for ideas. this by far is one of the best Ive come across! Also my wife mentioned possibly doing the draw out on transfer paper and using a projector (like the ones from school, if they still use em lol) or clamps and flashlight to prject the image on to the plywood, just adjust distance to get the right size you are looking for. my arrow will not break. Check the gold tip Bryon Ferguson Heavy Hunters. Great carbon arrow. I got my at big jim's bow company for half price because they are blems.

I appreciate the method used here. I wonder if you could have used a make shift projector to display the image unto the plywood instead of transferring a grid to scale. You seem like an intelligent guy, this is a good display of sound ingenuity.

Surprised nobody has mentioned this yet as far as I am aware of, but you can actually using adobe acrobat or reader to print life size pictures of anything, including this elk picture. The computer will do everything nearly perfectly and do all calculations for you. All you have to do is print and put it together like a really simple kids puzzle. Then you can lay it over the top of the plywood and trace from there. This should save you a ton of time.

You're a pretty good artist but one suggestion when transferring from the paper to the board, if you back light the paper onto the wood you can create a shadow image that would much easier to use than the grid. Just vary the distance of the paper from the wood to align the shadow. ;-)

You can also do this with a projector if you have one available to you. If you have kids in school, you can probably get a teacher to let you use one for a few minutes. Just trace your image on a transparency sheet and project it onto the wood, moving the projector to get the size correct and they trace on the wood. Very easy and fast.

Another thing to help with range estimation, place your target in the same type terrain as where you are going to be hunting. estimating range in an open field is one thing, but when you switch to woods or heavy cover it is entirely different. Great target, love your thinking on this, may do one myself!

Interesting. I like what you did. Lots of work. I have a projector which I use for this sort of thing. I'd find the image and then project it to the plywood. Saves a few steps. Not everyone has the luxury of a projector so your way makes it a bit simpler. However, I would eliminate one step. The transfer from the traced image from the led screen to the grid. I'd make the grid first then you know where you need to draw. If your image is larger than that you sill have more area on the paper to draw, (i.e. the antlers.) I'd also consider putting something to try to deaden the arrow points against the wood. I don't use a compound I use recurve.

+Elc0chin0 Yeah, or use a program that allows you to superimpose an image over a grid and then just increase the size of the image accordingly. Either way, I think the outcome in this video is awesome. I did see a tutorial before where a guy painted a mural in his house of a samurai scene from an old Japanese painting using a projector like you're saying. The result was incredible and it was the first time he'd tried it.

this is awesome! I'm a elk and mule deer bowhunter myself and that looks awesome. one thing though, could you do a video on foaming the target like an archery block? I think that would be more convenient that dragging a hay bale around with you.

Way we used to do this old school was to use an overhead transparency projector that can be found on craigslist or GoodWill sometimes for next to nothing. You could have the outline on transparency and then shoot it onto the plywood and trace it our on the plywood.

Hey man, Travis from Australia. Nice project, would b great idea for people starting off with lower poundage gear. I really like the cost effective approach towards targets as some are really expensive. For more poundage bows could possibly use high density foam for critical shots. None the less thanks for the insight.

you could pick up a cardboard bale (compacted cardboard pressed together and tied) from the local grocery store however they are big and they are heavy I have one and may even run the chain saw through it

Great idea. Biggest problems with 3d targets 1) price, 2) almost always too small 3) inconvenient to store. Your method solves all three. Honestly folks, you shouldn't be worried about hitting the plywood. The 3d target is intended to help you get used to how big an animal looks at a certain range to help with range estimation, and that's it. If you're worried about not getting your arrow through the vital cutout even out at 60 yards, you need to go back to the bullseye target to practice form and technique. Haven't seen any recently, but they used to make steel silhouette targets with cutouts for the vitals. Anyway, love the idea, and I'll definitely be making a few myself.

Good work I made different targets with wadded up plastic bags in a plastic bag compressed with cellophane. stops arrow good. maybe I'll build the elk and fill the whole with my bag target.

True but his principle works if you're ever drawing on a much larger scale, one where a projector isn't as useful. For making archery targets though, I think you're spot on.

Hey bowhunter4e, you should take a trip to the Cheyenne Mountain Archery Range in Colorado Springs, CO. They have an array of 3D targets that you can shoot at, to include realisticly scaled Elk, Moose, Deer, Bear, Mountain Lion, Turkey, and Hog 3D targets. It's a state park, and the cost to shoot there is pretty cheap. 13 dollars will get you an all day pass for the range, and parking, and it's located right at the base of the Rocky Mountains with Pikes Peak in the background! I am from Colorado, now living in North Carolina, and love that place. I'll be going back to Colorado in September 2016 to hunt for Elk. I was wondering if you had a video posted on your Elk hunt in Wyoming?

there is software that you can use to print a small image on to as many a4 papers using a regular printer, so you end up with a huge image of any chosen dimension. seems easier.

Actual kill zone is way lower than middle of the chest.... the spine is about 2/3 rds up from the bottom of the chest... so shoot at the bottom 3 rd.

Aim small miss small. I could drive a chrystler through that bullseye i would suggest painting a red "heart" and blue "lungs" on the bails to help with vital judgement.

Awesome idea man. I don't get how it was so cheap though, lol, here a sheet of plywood is $30, let alone cans of paint. That blows the budget right out of the water haha.
