One of the greatest bands of ANY genre to ever exist - and few have had more fun or been more fun to watch!
I love the Dregs. I saw them in 1979. I saw Steve Morse two other times. They were always great!
The Dregs are the most impressive, unique, incredible musicians/artists who have inspired me tremendously!! Thank you guys, truly!
One of THE greatest Southern Jazz/Rock bands ever to exist.
Just saw these guys again last night in Atlanta - what a blast! Made this old man feel like he was 19 again. Has it really been almost 50 years?
This is pure genius, though it's impossible to synch up the CD "Night of The Living Dregs" with the tracks recorded at Montreaux. The CD is just a tiny bit faster, and will run ahead of the DVD within about a minute. I know, I'm a geek, but I had to share that.
Yep, that's Rod !!!!!! One of the best drummers--I think he has THE most fun when he's playing of anybody !!!! And he still played legit stuff with 'Winger'. Awesome guy (all of the Dregs) I feel so priveleged to have known them then !!! Peace:)
I saw these guys open for Billy Cobham at the Roxie in Hollywood about this time. No one had heard of them, and the crowd included Stanley Clarke, Jeff Beck, Ray Gomez, Larry Coryell, Jaco Pastorius, and a whole mess of other big-name musicians. We was all blown away, completely and totally blown away.

Jaco played with most of these guys when they were in music school in Miami.
Got to see them in a few incarnations. Even w/ the remnants of Little Feat... NEVER disappointed. Night of the Living Dregs is in my top ten lifetime list.
hey...that was the whole point! I never listened to the Dixie Dregs trying to listen with polarized ears...the songs AS IS are the point...accepting this fusion of styles AS IS really was a tremendous inspiration to me...so I guess I am saying that the flow or lack thereof was the price for artistic revolution.
You got to be kidding me! excellent footage! If you have more from this concert, please post it. I love these guys. I love the original band sound. true inovators in what they call acid jazz today.
I love all of them but think this one really highlights creativity and communication between Steve and Allan. interesting piece of music..
Great piece of music.
That would have been awesome to be at this show. ROCK ON!!!!!
The most talented band I believe ever. Steve Morse get the accolades, but they are a unit, rack one a master musician. But Allen Sloan is the secret weapon on the Dregs-give a listen to The Riff Raff- with only Morse and Sloan It is a concerto,
Yes it's a classic Dregs lineup..,Rod on the drums
great song, it must have been a mindblowing experience seeing these guys live... btw i also love the version on morse's High Tension Wires cd
Absolutely amazing performance.
Oh my god!, HE IS EXCELENT! ♥
gotta love watching masters at work.
This is wickedly awesome! :)
peprechauan lemonade! love it!
thanks for posting that. i saw them live many times throughout the 80's in the los angeles area. one of the great live bands. quint
I can see where you're coming from - yes, their complexity added lots of interest and exciting explorations of unexpected sonic and melodic paths. I guess the things I most appreciated were their dynamics, intricately textured instrumental synergies, and clean, open sound. Continuously changing key and modal shifts, odd time signatures - all perfectly in sync - made this stuff incredibly hard to pull off live. Yet, they made it look effortless - and like they were having a great time playing it.
I saw these guys live in a small club in Santa Cruz, Ca 1981 I believe Hot then and HOT now and forever

Really? I'm a fan of both bands and fail to see this as a nod to GG. GG sounded much more like Genesis or Yes. Please respond with whatever GG music this is supposedly a nod to?
Such a precise playing...
The rip comes from the DVD "Dixie Dregs Live at Montreaux 1978 (Eagle Eye media EE 39119-9). The DVD is in colour, but due some conversion problems, i've upped it in B/W) The complete set in the DVD is as follows: Freefall Leprechaun Promenade Country House Shuffle Patchwork Attila The Hun The Bash Night of the Living Dregs Wages of Weirdness Take It Off The Top Kathreen ("an avant garde country song" - Andy West ha ha) Dixie
This video is great
Wow !!
I NEED THIS DVD!!! III NEEED ITTTTTT
Yeh. They were HOT! Roots in Kansas, Mahavishnu. Check out Dregs of the Earth (album)
Personally I see what you refer to as stylistic fragmentation as more of a musical melange, a salad of styles. For me, it's one of the things that attracts me to them. I think perhaps for them it caused a clash maybe, but for me as a listener, I loved it. Not knocking ya there guy, just adding to the debate. Peace.
@LonoTheOno I to was there at the Roxy in 1978 it was one of those life changing experience.
Yeah, it's a Telecaster with a Strat neck. Steve had a weird custom guitar he played then. Thanks for the video, by the way! Love the Dregs
There always after me lucky charms!
The 70/80 dregs are a genre. Don't try to classify. 30 years ago I saw them twice in San Diego. Videos now show my reason for inspiration, but wow I'm not that good. Glad my son is with saxophone. They deserve more than the commercial bands of the 80's in particular: dregs of the earth and industry standard should have been grammies in my mind. Paul Samchez, now a geoscientist who plays with a style that is aspired. Steve, you have got to admit, free music gets me to buy more and more.
Where is more of this footage? I love this band!!!
dang, it's 2013 and i never heard about this guys before.. hmm, there must be a lot of good music around still to find i guess.. :]
mbrme, I was sitting to the right of the stage, second row in the galley of tables. My buddy, Jerry, wound up sharing a table with Stanley Clarke. And what did you think of the jam on-stage after Cobham's set? Like, six guitarists, four or five bassists, and so many drummers that they were each playing one drum or cymbal each. Just about the craziest thing I ever saw. Surw was a great time.
Thanks so much for posting this. Please tell me there is more from this show!!!
B 4 Mark Parrish, Steve Davidowsky 🔑's .
@alkoolblue If you mean the pinky around the volume knob, he got it from Phil Keaggy who got it from Zalman Yanovsky.
The folks at Montreaux did a really biased job of mixing this. They didn't get the balance right that's for sure. I'm glad we have a good mix on the 'night of the living dregs' recordings. This video needs to serve as a reference to sound and video folks that you have to remain unbiased, and really capture it in that fashion. You may go down in history as the folks the screwed it up if you don't.
Gotcha. And of course you're right about Steve Davidowski. I remember when a radio DJ announced he had just gotten an album by a new band called "The Dixie Dregs", pulled out an advanced copy of "Freefall" and started spinning it. Needless to say, I was blown away and started spreading the word to anyone who would listen. Do you know if this Montreaux footage is available anywhere?
Rod Morgenstein---just read the caption at the upper right !!! Peace:)
2:20!? nOW THAT IS JUST SICK!
so, Steve's trademark volume control is more than 32 years old!

...with guest violinist joaquin phoenix
@Joeey I think almost everyone knows that little known fact along with Allen Sloan now being a doctor.
Very Jean Luc Ponty
@00s00m wow, that pretty much sums it up. I turn certain musically astute youth in the direction of this phenominal group as often as I can, as should every music teacher. I'm just sayin'
excellent footage! If you have more from this concert, please post it

@Joeey Thanks, dont believe Ive heard of him so Ill look him up. Thanks for the tip. The only single thing I liked about Paul Weller was his line "...the public wants what the public gets..." Freedom of choice my arse.
actually, the DVD's audio is superb, and either it was a recording from a different night, or they totally remixed it. but of course, unless you hate the recent loudness wars trends. the DVD's audio is slightly over compressed.
@LonoTheOno i was there to life changing
I agree...though the Dregs did start out playing Mahavishnu covers.
It IS great to see this old footage--I'm hoping this whole concert is preserved and available somewhere--but that's not T. Lavitz playing keyboards...it's the original Dregs keyboard player Mark Parrish.

mjtgough Dixie Dregs live at Montreaux Jazz Festival 1978
They hardly seem to raise a sweat doin' it do they? For me it's just ball-tearing. I can see though, where the general public would have trouble liking it. I played Unsung Heroes for a mate once and all he could comment on was the fact that they were half-naked on the cover.....he likes his music safe and easy like Billy Joel and Mr Springsteen. The kinda' stuff I can't handle.
Where can I but this Dvd.
Kevin Young, are you out there?
1975
what guitar is morse playing?
Just a bit more than a dash...
No, just the Dixie Dregs
@LonoTheOno
@Hagopn1 Boy I disagree completely. I always thought Sloan could play circles around O'Connor.
I know. Isn't it great?
what was the drummers full name i would really like to know

Rod Morgenstein. In case you haven’t found out in the last 15 years…and I really hope you are still alive and well ✌️
Deeppurpleさすがでしょ?
Phil K says that this is not progressive. How is it classified with you,the people ?
At what point in this video did you wonder if you were watching a classic Young Frankenstein movie? I give this a 1 on a scale of 100 on the creatively scale. The video of course, not the brilliant music.
Gave Mahavishnu a run for their money...Almost!

Nope-mahavishnu is great but overall the dregs composistions and musicians are better
"HE"???, nothing THEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Dregs were incredibly talented - saw them open for Santana in Atlanta around '78. Problem was (and it was a beautiful problem) that they just didn't know what they wanted to be, as much of their music was brilliant, but stylistically a bit too fragmented. Much of it didn't really flow very well, as it tended to sound like all these little bits forced together. I never thought the sum was as good as the parts, musically speaking. Still, Morse stuck to his desired vision - never compromising!

Back handed compliment. Self important opinion. Don't break your arm
Yeah, that "Unsung Heroes" cover was really bizarre, wasn't it? Made them look like some Metallica rejects that couldn't sing (thus no mouths)!
Violin is painfully out of tune.

Gawd this is some awful crap. I love all kinds of music but this mess needs to stay buried in the 70s. The only ones who can understand it, play it.
