    I love how realistic the dialogue is. Some people in the comments say that they sound too much like adults but,in my experience, that's what most kids talk like. Especially when they're around 11-15 wich seems to be the case for these girls. A lot of times they hear adults talk like that so they imitate it to sound cool and mature. They didn't over do it though and that just made the dialogue feel real.

    In France, children from very poor socio-economic backgrounds can sometimes be taken to institutions called "foyers" to take care of their education and alleviate the cost of raising a child for the parents. They can spend several years or even their entire childhood there and only get to see their family occasionally. The tense climate there can sometimes remind of juvie, which explains why the kids keep running away. Even for girls, it's not uncommon for them to act tough and adopt a very specific way of speaking to try to fit in.

    I was looking a little closer at the details of this film. 1. The names on the characters' beds. We already know that the smallest girl's name is Lilou, but the others weren't mentioned (that I'm aware of). They have, however, written their names at the end of their beds; Prudence, Raf and Lucie. I'm guessing that (based on personalities being reflected in their handwriting) Prudence is the light-haired girl and Raf is the darker, short-haired girl. 2. I find it quite interesting that Lucie's name is on one of the beds, as we all know the girls were planning on going to meet her. Perhaps she left the foyer?? 3. Each of the girls seem to resemble a particular plant. Lilou resembles a leaf, with dark green hair and a twig with leaves on her head. Prudence resembles a flower - delicate and beautiful (but still with a bit of feist). She has very light pink hair with a small, pink flower on her head. Raf resembles a stick, which could represent a characterised robust tree. Her hair is brown, with a small twig on her head. 4. The last thing I noticed was the title at the end. At first, I thought it was just someone brainstorming ideas for the title. But I realised it was more likely to be the distances the girls have travelled to get to Lucie. The distance they travelled is a little longer each time, so I'm going to assume that they keep attempting to meet up with this girl and get a little further each time, but never seem to get there in time before they get taken back to the foyer. They probably cross off the distances each time or something like that?? I don't know, it's up to interpretation I suppose. I'm just so impressed by this film, there are so many small details and that makes me so happy, a lot of love went into this... I just want to see more omg.

    It's incredible how little subtleties, like the flower child's reaction to the car at 1:02, the camera angles, shadowed lighting, and I'm sure other things I'm not even catching onto, convey a feeling of unease, of threat, of being watched, even before we fully know the plot of this little story.

  • @melindawolfUS

    @melindawolfUS

    Disney used to, Pinocchio and Bambi both included little snapshots of nature and every-day life items, but lately Disney is all about "rush fast to spectacle". This short reminds me much more of studio Ghibli: they love letting you watch bacon cook, flowers in a breeze, the way a stray cat wanders the street. They also like slice of life stuff like this. Not every moment in their films drives the plot or the character arc, sometimes we just 'hang out' in their world for a moment. That's unusual in modern Western film in general but it used to be fairly common ;) Tarantino still does it -one of the reasons his films feel 'old'.

    I see a lot of comments saying animations made by students here NEED to be made into actual movies. And for one, I actually agree. Despite this having so little views, I feel like if this short film and most films uploaded onto this channel were commercialized as full-length films, no one would be able to ignore these students' awesome ability to tell a fantastic story. I wouldn't even mind going out (and paying for) to see films like Dix-huit kilomètres trois. Despite the girls drastically contrasting features, they seem to embody similar rowdy, tomboy-Esque personalities because of their living arrangement. This can be quoted from the top comment made by, *I AINT RANDOM*

    Franchement, j'ai adoré. Les personnages sont géniaux déjà, j'adore l'idée d'un petit groupe de potes qui kiffe la vie en fuyant leur foyer. Les voir traverser la foret, les champs, la campagne, avec des dessins très agréables à l'oeil... ça donne envie d'être avec elles. Les voix sont super aussi. Le dialogue des personnages est incroyablement naturel et c'est franchement ça qui rend l'animation réaliste. You can see the 4 bunkbeds with the names of each of the girls (and by the way of how they are writen you can figure out wich one belongs to each girl). The corner right says "Lucie", so they're missing their former roomate who's not with them anymore. This is great visual storytelling.

    @@professionalbummer3274 Well I don't know if and when he will reply so I will exaplain a little clearer what i understand. The "story" isn't a complete story. If we take the first 4 minutes of a full feature lenght film and present it to the audience as a short film, the audience will not be engaged. Why? Because, yes we know they want to run away, but that doesn't happen and it doesn't feel like much was accomplished. Maybe in the future they will run away, but that isn't in this short. To engage the audience we need something the charcaters desperately need or want to do, and will try to do no matter what. In the short they told us the girls wanted to find another friend, but where instantly caught and that ended without much to it if they had gotten away and met the friend that would have given more substance. You could also reframe and reorder the events to create a more full and engaging story: 1 The girls are out and about 2 The girls are caught 3 The girls have had enough and run away (happy ending) or start with the action 1The girls are ophans and they decide to run away 2 The girls are having fun/ they start to struggle without a home 3They get caught and sent back (sad ending) This gives the story more of a begining, middle and end. Making the story overall more engaging as we have a motive, consegnence to that motive and and some kind o conclusion to the actions that are taken. Hope that helps a little.

  • @salvols1618

    @@professionalbummer3274 This is the great thing about stories and films! Everyone sees it differently! You obviously had a connection to the characters and found the story intriguing, but not everyone will and thats fine. I know its common in films that orphans want to escape especially if their friends have been adopted, but we don't see the escape, why they want to escape, we don't see any cruel or nasty sittuations at the orphanage, so it's hard to relate to them wanting to escape or to their longing to see the girl not having seen her or her ralationship with them. Yes we find out at the end, but it all lasted so little that the realization didn't really do much for me. All i'm saying is it could benefit from a couple more scenes to just fill in some gaps. Make us want them to succeed and maybe make the capture scene more drammatic, push the emotions so that we feel even worse when we see them stuck in a room.

People talking over each other and rapidly, and not everything's a conversation, it's just speaking sometimes to talk, adding flavor to what's happening, character building, not always story building in an overt way.

    The music is Dorner Party by Black Lips btw Also I love the animation, it’s so smooth and the colors are v pretty especially the part where they’re in the forest and the way the light hits them, also has an interesting premise to it abt France’s foyers, the characters are interesting and the animation over all reminds me a lot of the movie Tekkonkinkreet

    If you're trying to find me, well you're gonna But I won't be staying with my mother I'm gonna lose control I'm going out on my own patrol But you won't see me with another I don't think I'll run away Maybe I will some other day But for now, I'm back a while, I'll say Why don't you come out here and play? I'm looking down on you from the hilltop I can't tell a Ranger from a real cop They seem like just the same All out to smear my name What can I do to make them all stop? I don't think I'll run away Maybe I will some other day But for now, I'm back a while, I'll say Why don't you come out here and play?
