As an ex professional diver myself (including drift diving with zero visibility in pitch-black waters in the Netherlands) there are so many things I would have done differently. Where are the diving flags? Diver balloons? Buoyancy bags? Descending lines? Where is the planning? Ideally you calculate where the tide is taking you. You go in 5 min before tide change. The drift will take you to your search area. There you have a good time-window to do what ever you need to do during still waters.. And when the tide changes it will bring you back to the boat. All this while attached to a balloon so the surface crew knows exactly where you are. I'm not trying to be a smart-ass. I'm just concerned for the safety of the entire crew. This is how people die and get lost under water. I've seen it. That said though I realize you can't show everything in a video. And there is probably a lot of planning you can't show in a 22 min video. Love the video though. Can't wait to see part 2. But please, stay safe. It was said in the video, this isn't Bermuda with it's 200 meter views below the surface. ❤❤ (Edited: fixed some spelling errors.)

seems reckless the way they did it, shouldn't have been possible for that guy to float away like that.

A month or more ago another youtube channel already did this. I do not remember seeing any balloons and they were with a different crew completely so that may just be something that isn't used on the hudson. Plus with hard helmet diving they're connected to the boat so those guys don't need it as their lines won't break so easily. It does seem like something that could have been useful for the guy that had the line get cut who wasn't in a hard helmet though. Even more so since it sounded like they didn't have any way to communicate with him once he went under.

I think it has to do with water channel rules and the fact the dive lead is a sewer diver this isn't a hydro electric dam or some water system where the divers control the waterway and don't have much to deal with in the way of ships so all the flags n stuff might take up too much room the bad/bladders n shit might be due to them being hard divers idk

Im not a diver but as someone who has spent a lot of time jet skiing and falling into the water around Manhattan..... the currents are real. I knew right away when they were talking about diving around hell gate (google it) that is was going to be tough to impossible. Im actually shocked that at least the crew from the barge company did not say "yeah thats not a good idea right now". Was anybody on that crew from the area?

Let me just tell you as a New York native the Hudson River is everything but beautiful 😂
That has to be one of the most unpredictable rivers in the country. As you just seen that river can go from slack tide to raging in seconds. I’ve seen a boat docked the wrong way and before anyone could react and turn the boat around it was sunk. Love the videos great to see you guys in my back yard and be safe. Lots of items that can cut you down there too

I 100% agree with you. I live in upstate NY and was thinking the same thing. I posted about them in even swimming in the Hudson because of the pollution from the GE plant in Schenectady. But you’re also 100% right about the unpredictability of the Hudson River

This is not to advance science, this is strictly to advance pocket books, which is fine as long as it is paid for privately, Mel Fischer is an example. And it is a interesting subject. Used to be into dinosaur digging when I was younger. Found a bunch of stuff including a camarosaurus skull and vertebrae, velociraptor toes all sorts of stuff. This might be my excuse to get back into it!
I would LOVE to see you on the Joe Rogan Experience.
As a long term windsurfer. Who has been Windsurfing the Hudson for years. I would love to know the back story of why these bones were located to NYC. A huge tidal river with big waves. And given our world class Museum of Natural history. Why the bones ended up being dumped in the Hudson. And lastly. Due to Pete Seeger the folk singer and the boat the ClearWater, the Hudson river is now cleaner than it has ever been over the past half a century (50 years)..... what's equally interesting is the stories about drilling under the river to build the Lincoln and Holland tunnels between NY & NJ..... GREAT VIDEO!!!
AWESOME video, love the diverse videos from vehicle recovery, helicopters and now diving. I did mud diving for years in power plants around the Potomac river and can confirm things can from good to terrible in a second. Tide tables and a hard had safety diver would have helped as well as knowing what weight the one diver needed from the start instead of figuring it out on the fly.
The east river is no friggin joke…. I have lost count how many times over the years I’ve sent out a water rescue for someone in the water, only for the person to unfortunately drown cause the current changed from slack tide to an in/out bound tide and the person gets dragged underwater and pushed a few miles away. It happens so quick unless you’ve seen it, you would be hard pressed to believe how fast it changes and how fast the current gets.
Doug!!!! I’m so glad to see him doing so well after what happened. ❤

Great to see Doug with you guys
I remember watching an Alaskan show on Discovery and locals were boating down a ricer where glaciers had pushed up like 50 feet of dirt, the river had washed a section away and there were tusks sticking out of the dirt wall all over the place. They just drove by and pointed out how cool it is. I think they are forbidden to touch them.
