Diving Double Reef Curaçao | The Shore Dive Collection | TropicLens - 4K

Appropriately named Double Reef has lots of sea life across both the inner and outer reef. It also has quite a bit going on above ground as the Park Lucha Pa Libertat or Fight For Freedom Park is a popular destination for fishing, tours and exercise.
Although the dive site entry is a literal walk in the park, it is quite long at 650 feet (200 meters); but well worth the effort. We documented our first convoluted barrel sponge here and also spotted a few uncommon critters including a cornetfish and juvenile blue parrotfish and jackknife fishes. As usual, the video explains everything you need to know about how to dive Double Reef.
We want to encourage more shore diving, so this video provides some guidance where the site is, how to dive it and what you may see there. If you want to skip to or review specific topics, the section timings are as follows.

UNCOMMON SEA LIFE AND FIRST TIME CAPTURE IDENTIFICATION
We primarily use two sources to validate sea life we don’t recognize. The first is Florent's Guide To TheTropical Reefs which can be found at reefguide.org. Its free and has lots of pictures, but is not comprehensive. The second is “The Reef Set: Reef Fish, Reef Creature and Reef Coral (3 Volumes)”. The box set can be found on Amazon; however with all our travels, we also purchased the eBooks (fishid.com/store/product-categ...) so we don’t have to carry an extra five pounds of paper in our luggage. :-) We also reference other sources from time to time as well.
Here are some links to more information/images about creatures from this video.

The ladder on the megapier used by divers is currently broken, so we are finishing our Superior Producer dives with a short drift/swim to exit at Double Reef. It is, indeed, still a terrific site. :-)

Thank you for the kind thoughts Hashem. Things are going pretty well (knock on wood) so far and we now have a return date scheduled. It will be the first time back to Bonaire going through the "Residents" queue at the airport! We still need to complete Blue Bay, so look for that soon.

It's one of my favorite dive sites of Curacao. I used to do double reef as a drift dive since there's usually a decent current from east to west. We would get out at the fishermans wharf at playa zakito. You should give that a try, let me know what you think. the breakwater running parallel to the coastline at aqua electra plant has good coral cover on the sea floor and one HUGE sponge, as big as a bath tub. That breakwater is also a cool night dive spot. I dove there multiple times when doing coral spawning research back in 2018. During night dives there you will often find big tarpon coming up to your flashlight beam.

Thanks SpitfireAce! We plan on going back to Curaçao at some point in 2023, so we may give that a try. I am (very) envious about the coral spawning research. I have tried to capture spawning a couple of time, but all have been somewhat less than successful. Next year... :-)

Is there a reason one can't just enter/exit at the parking near the Parke Lucha gate?
