Ditch The Rockler Panel Clamps - A Way Better Solution For Glue Ups
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Episode #852 Today, we're making some metal cauls for gluing up large boards and we're comparing them to the Rockler clamps. This is WAY better!
Credit to lee @BustedKnuckleWoodworks for this idea! He knocked it out of the park with this one!

HAHA it's a game changer! Thanks for the idea, man👍👍
Thats a better alternative to spending more money if you're not going to use them every day. Thanks for this.

Wax paper simplifies the clean-up. Cut straps wide enough to cover the cauls, allowing some extra on either side.

Shout out to Lee at @bustedknucklewoodworks When I first saw those clamps, I was thinking about buying them, but after seeing how much trouble you were having with them. I decided not to purchase them. Looks like a Lowes run is in my near future

I saw that video, too, and will be making those cauls when I find the chanals.

Genius! It's always great to find a good solution to a problem and saving money is the icing on the cake. I've always used wax paper between my Bessey parallel clamps and the wood to keep the glue off the clamps.

Thanks Lori! We need to try the wax paper.
That’s awesome for my flags. Thank you again. Just so you know you guys got me started with woodworking. Thank you. Oooorah

I always stop and take a look at those Rockler clamps when I see them and wonder if I should pick a couple up but always walk on by as they did seem to complicated. Glad I didn't buy them. I also saw that video and might give this WAY cheaper, less complicated version.

Hope you can get some of your money back on the Rocklers. You have spent a lot on both kinds. Kind of a tough lesson to learn sometimes.

Really enjoy watching your video's guys! Ya, a lot of Rockler stuff is over rated (oh and over priced). Keep up the good work.

I hear that! I'm super cheap 😂😂
Simple to use and stores out of the way in a small space 👍🏻 I was at a woodworking show a number of years ago and spent a chunk of money on a panel clamp system that takes "clunky" and multiplies it by 10 even though the guy that did the demo made it look easy. I cannot find a name for those panel clamps but I did find where someone mounted them to a roll-around cart. Looks like I just found my next shop project.

HAHA they work awesome!
I just finished two red oak glue ups with regular clamps, bit of a pain, but turned out great. But MAN those channels looks like a totally awesome idea! Thanks for sharing, I will definitely be trying that. Here is an idea that works extremely well for the glue squeeze out...I lay pieces of the backing from Ormask (shiny side toward the glue) and then put my clamps on and I find this works awesome, so save your backing from Ormask.😊 Andrew. Thx again.

I've seen these home-made clamps, and I even have the 4-way clamping hardware so that you don't have to use pipe clamps in the process.

Great idea! I just bought some Unistrut to make me some. One idea I have as far as glue sticking is to put a strip of packing tape down each edge and fold it down to the sides. That way it’s not in the way of the bolts but glue won’t stick to them. What are y’all’s thoughts?
@oldave100
3 ай бұрын
Packing tape would probably work pretty well. A lot of people suggested using wax paper but we haven't tried it yet. We used paste wax on the latest glue up and that worked great
I've used the same kind set up.. try using shorter bolts so you can put a socket on your cordless impact gun will make it faster before the glue starts setting up...
@oldave100
4 ай бұрын
Ya we definitely need shorter bolts
Instead of waxing, consider using the tape for tyvek. $15 bucks a roll for about 320 feet. Gives you enough for replacements for life, and glue won't stick to it. Fast, easy, long lasting, cheap.

@oldave100 I get some wood on one every now and then! Lol. Love this idea. Going to make a set this weekend. Great video.
Use wax paper or parchment paper for glue issues and you do not get wax or oil on the work .
@oldave100

Great idea!
what about the edges of the channel digging into the wood?
@oldave100
4 ай бұрын
It actually wasn't an issue at all
Does the strut leave any marks or damage to the wood after it's clamped down?
@oldave100
4 ай бұрын
Not at all on the redwood. We haven't used it on pine yet, but if there is any I'm sure it'll be shallow enough that it'll sand out when it's surfaced
Could make a panel wall, where you do glue-ups, and its out of the way. Check Izzy Swan out. He has lots old build vids.
@oldave100

We're looking at building one of those in the future
i'll stick with my rockler clamps, easy to use and never had any issues, this looks far more cumbersome, you didnt factor in the cost of 4 pipe clamps on top of the cauls
