    I feel compelled to defend Requiem for a Dream as a story because of the source material; Hubert Selby Jr struggled with addiction himself for a substantial portion of his life and the novel was a very raw reflection of that. It is very much based on his lived experiences, particularly Sara and Harry's stories. The novel is also super stream of consciousness which I think Aronofsky tried to translate into the panic-inducing style that we see in the movie. Unfortunately, I think a lot of the humanity and atmosphere was lost in that translation and the end result comes off as a PSA. I'd recommend checking out the novel if you can! I did an independent research project on it in high school and it was enlightening.

I’m usually so in-sync with May’s opinions but I really love ‘Mother!’ as a environmentalist, romantic, feminist and armchair theologian, I feel like it’s got a lot of horrific value through any of those lenses. Yeah actually I’d be interested in seeing May’s take on suehiro maruo’s artwork in general. It won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but I think his stuff is pretty interesting

  • @NINI-xc6my

    @NINI-xc6my

    2 жыл бұрын

    It think that its mostly the tone that people dont like. All Suehiro Maruo stories have this odd tone where you live in a world that is just seems to enjoy being horrible. If you are horrible you are the only one that is having fun and everyone thats good ..is screwed...even if it looks like that for a second like there is a happy ending for them he pulls the rug right under you. In most stories even the evil people are screwed and become victims of a greater evil. And at the same time the tone he is aming for is not Grim dark or depressing as one would imagine.. If you would have to describe it would be something like "Schadenfreude". While at the same time Maruo is putting so much work into his Art to make it visually appealing and if you read his mangas he uses such odd but defintily thought-through techniques to create an atmosphere of horror that you kinda have respect him for the effort. The only guy i can actually compare Him to is John Webster, a 17th century dramatist. His Plays would basicly always end with the good guys dying in the middle of the story , everyone else remaining is horrible and loving it or horrible and Vengefull or Horrbile and gone Mad and in the end everyone is dead to send the audience home happy.. , probably in a final giant bloodbath after a bunch of murder, madness..sometimes lycanthropy in which all evil characters kill each other. But its also at the same time its written in this clever, witty, poetic shakespearian dialogue and with well structured Themes and Charackter development that you cant stop thinkig "this is a well crafted mass-murder in your final act Sir...uhh.. Chefs kiss."

    I'm surprised it apparently has supporters. It kind of reminds me of A Serbian Film in that the only real appeal is that bad shit happens but while ASF isn't particularly good it's much less ugly and dumb. Honestly maybe anime Megan is Missing is more accurate. If you want to watch an anime with someone getting denied a happy break from their tragic life the first arc/book of Blue Literature is actually okay from what I remember although it has less shock value.

  • @DecoyBlackMage

    @DecoyBlackMage

    The manga is an interesting read. Overall the anime follows the same story, though a few things are different here and there. Weirdly enough it is actually kinda MORE disturbing in some ways, the art is actually quite good as well. It is Ero guro, so you kinda get just that, the mangakas focus on the human body, twisting it and corrupting it is quite interesting overall, it is more the main characters age that really makes the work difficult, the sexual assaults and flat out abuse. That ending though....Oh boy does that ending stick with you........

  • @Frosting1000

    @@deparinge not rlly a supporter of the film itself, but its backstory is also pretty interesting and weird. I’m more saying suehiro maruo’s other mangas should be looked at, they’re considered the peak examples of ero-guro as an art form and deal with the darkness and bleakness of post war Japan. Like the things that happened in his stories are horrible, fucked up and sometimes absurd bc the country just went through a world war and things can’t just go back to normal. Plus the art is quite intricate.

    The Green Inferno blows its load on that one, imo, incredibly disturbing death where the dude gets ripped apart. Everything else is a joke.

    My college film class watched Titicut Follies lmao. Like... all three professors of the class approved it to be watched by us all as a class, and screened it. All I can say is, the professor who chose it did not give us nearly enough trigger warnings. While I'm at it, sanism and ableism are deeply critical realities and marginalizations that aren't talked about nearly enough, and aren't even considered in a surprising amount of so-called "progressive" activist circles.

    May, me dear, thank you for the list. I did have to shut my eyes and plug my ears for the WTDGTD footage, but that will count for my Halloween jumpscare this year. Also, huge thank you for reposting your wonderful, educational Halloween essays! I love those yummy treats💕. Now I will patiently wait for your hot take on Halloween Kills. I hope you and your loves have a wonderful time this weekend🎃

    Didn’t know (forgot?) there was a movie about Snowtown. Maybe growing up with the real event in the local news cycle will make it hit different?

  • @iwillworkharder
    @iwillworkharder2 жыл бұрын

    "Snowtown" is a weird movie for me, because while a lot of it was slow and not very compelling like May said, it does contain a scene that inspired within me a more pure empathetic terror than I can muster for most other horror movies. But does that one scene make up for the whole rest of the movie? I dunno.

    TW: Unaliving We watched The Bridge in our high school Psychology class, and as disturbing as it was, it was honestly the best piece of unaliving prevention media I've ever seen. The interviews with survivors were haunting, most if not all of them (I don't remember) basically said something along the lines of "Once I got halfway down I felt immediate regret and realized all the problems that led me here could be easily fixed" and I think about that every time I feel glum. No matter how depressed I feel, I'm lucky to 100% reject unaliving because I know it is nowhere near as good of an exit as it's sometimes romanticized as because of that movie.

    I thought Meet the Feebles was good but not too disturbing honestly. :( Shoujo Tsubaki probably isn't worth a second watch but is definitely worth looking into the creative process behind it. People tend. to oversell how disturbing it is when there are way worse anime, even in the current year.

    The thing I find the most interesting about Tusk is the villain. At one point he starts talking about his backstory and how he was orphaned, instutionalized, etc. It explains a *lot* of his behavior, but it doesn't remove the fact he's a sadistic, delusional lunatic.

    REQUIEM FOR A DREAM IS AMAZING. Ellen Burstyn as Sara Goldfarb is 100% THE best acting I have ever seen in my entire life. It is not a pro-warondrugs movie. It's based on a 1972 novel by Huberty Selby Jr based on his own experiences with addiction. I love it for Sara (Ellen), too, though, as I could relate to her character very strongly (I became addicted to medications prescribed to me by a dodgy doctor....amphetamine sulphate for weight loss, Xanax for anxiety, Phenobarbital for sleep and Oxycodone/OxyContin for pain). With the fridge things, the fridge growling at her represents her stomach rumbling. She thinks it's wanting to eat her because it's shouting "Feed me Sara", but that's again the fridge representing her stomach and it's actually begging "Feed me, Sara".

    I realised something about saw recently you never actually see anybody die, 1: Paul is killed by the barb wire trap, you see him running around in the barb wire maze trying to escape and you see his body but you don’t actually see him die, you just see the door shut. 2: mark is killed in the explosion trap, you see the explosion start but you don’t quite see him die as it quickly cuts to his burned up corpse. 3: Donnie is stabbed by Amanda, you never actually see Donnie get stabbed, the camera focuses on Amanda’s face the whole time, you see his guts but you don’t actually see him die. 4: detective Sing’s head is blown off by the shotgun trap, you don’t actually see his head get blown off the camera focuses on the shotgun firing, you see his decapitated body but you don’t actually see him die. 5: David is shot by Zep, when David is being shot it focuses on his face, he then falls to the ground, you see him breathe one last time and then his eyes close, it may seem like he’s dead but you don’t just get shot and die immediately, he probably just accepted he was going to die and so just plain and simple gave up and closed his eyes, it then cuts away. 6: Zep is killed with a toilet lid, once again you don’t actually see him getting beaten repeatedly with the toilet lid, the camera focuses on Adam’s facial expressions while killing Zep. 7: Adam, this one is the most obvious, as Jigsaw simply closes the door, leaving Adam inside to die. Obviously you don’t see him die. In conclusion the closet you get to seeing someone die is David Tap and even then it’s debatable, other then that every other death either focuses on something, shows the build up and aftermath but never the actual death or in the case of Adam, just straight up isn’t even confirmed until the second one.
