On Question 8, I found a quick way to solve it without a system using the combined rate method. Use D=R*T like normal and solve for each rate. 1800/3 = 600 for WITH rate 1800/4 = 450 for the AGASINT rate Add the rates. 600+450 = 1050 1050/2 rates = 525 for the STILL SPEED rate Last part, Jetstream speed is just WITH rate (600) - STILL rate (525) 600-525= 75. Of course, the beauty about math is that there can be multiple valid solutions to complex problems. That said, I wouldn't necessarily agree that using a system of equations is slower: when you have to draw diagrams and explain every little step so you can reach a wide audience, things just seem slower. Hey for questions #6. Is it meant to be 2.25 hours or were we meant to find t by taking the 2.25 hours and subtracting 2, making the actual time .25 hours. It would make more sense at .25 hours due to the Helo only traveling 200 miles in 2 hours while the jet is traveling 1800 miles in 2 hours. Let me know your thoughts.
@GrammarHero
4 жыл бұрын
To solve for the time (t) it takes for the fighter jet to catch up to the helicopter, we let their distances be equal to each other. In addition, we also accounted for the helicopter's head start when we set up the chart by adding t - 2 for the fighter jet's time. In light of the above, there's no need to account for the head start at the end of the problem; we already did that while solving.

@Grammer Hero and @Jose Galindez - For question #6, the math is accurate however there is an error in how the answer was stated. As shown in the table, t represents the time the Helio travelled, and t - 2 represents the time the F-14 travelled. Therefore, t=2.25 hours is how long the Helio was traveling, and t - 2 (which is: 2.25 - 2 = .25 hours) is how long the F-14 was traveling. The answer is that the F-14 travelled for .25 hours (t - 2, where t=2.25) to catch up to the Helio. Thank you for making these videos. It's a helpful resource for many people, and you do a great job explaining. Much appreciated!
I love the vid, but I am very confused about question 6. I can't wrap my head around how it would take the fighter jet 2.25 hours to catch up to the helicopter. In one hour the jet would have traveled 900 miles from point 0, while the helicopter would have traveled 300 miles from point 0 (counting the 2 hour head start). If you could please help me out with a logical explanation, I've been stressing a lot about his problem. Thanks!
@GrammarHero
3 жыл бұрын
As I mentioned in the video, some of the problems in this video are very difficult. So, I wouldn't stress over just one problem. As long as you generally understand how to solve basic problems involving distance, rate, and time, you'll be good to go on test day. Toward the end of almost all of my videos, I usually ramp up the difficulty by quite a lot.
@AbdulRahim-st4xk
2 жыл бұрын
I was also thinking there is something probably wrong with the solution. I solved it differently and I had the time to be 0.25hrs. This means in 0.25hrs the jet would have travelled 225mi which is the same distance that the helicopter would have covered (200+100*0.25)
@paulmaggiar8274
2 жыл бұрын
The speed of the jet is presented as t-2. If we subtract 2 from 2.25 we get 0.25 0r 15 minutes.
39:10, shouldn't the answer be 0.25 hours and not 2.25 hours. Because t is the time of the helicopter whereas the question is asking on the time of the f-14 which is t-2; 2.25-2, 0.25
For question "B" after reducing 45/60 = 3/4 i kept it as a fraction and put 45/1 x 3/4 = 134/4 and divided it and got 33.5 , would this method work?

Wouldn't the answer for #6 be 4.5 hours? In your example you showed that the helicopter travels for 100 MPH but since 2 hours have passed, that would make it 200 miles of distance. 900/200 = 4.5. I'm not sure why you only accounted for 100 miles of distance since it has already been two hours that have passed and the helicopter is going 100MPH.

Just wanted to say big thank you for what you're putting out there, it means alot. Now about question 6, how is it going to take 2.25 Hours for an F-14 to catch-up with a helicopter 🚁 😳 . 900×2.25? Helicopter went East at the rate of 100MPH for 2 Hours, 200miles away F-14 going at the rate of 15mpm. So it's going to take F-14 13.33333 minutes to get there??! Help me with this please and thank you.
@GrammarHero
2 жыл бұрын
Since the fighter jet was delayed by two hours, you have to include those two hours in the answer. It may take the fighter jet 25 minutes to catch the helicopter as soon as it starts flying, but again, it was delayed by two hours. The question could probably be worded a littler better, but it's not asking how long the jet flew to catch the helicopter. It's asking how long it took in total, including the time it was delayed.

If you watch my other video on d =rt, you'll get to see how good my boats come out.
In the practice problem you converted 45 min to 3/4 of an hour to .75 and then on the word problems you converted half an hour to 1/2 to .5, wouldnt 30 minutes be 2/4 to .50?

As long as you understand most of this video, you should be good to go. The last few questions are designed to be challenging. If you watch enough of my videos, you should notice a pattern: for the most part, I start out with really simply questions, and I end with really challenging ones.
33:45 for a similar chase question that wants to know the real time instead of the hours B catches up with A: how do i translate the answer to time? Plane leaves at 3:30pm traveling at 300mph and a jet leaves 1.5 hours later traveling at 450mph. What time will the jet catch up? Using the chart I got t = -4.5 and im confused on what to do with that result to get a real time answer
