    There is a quicker way to work out the second problem... First you figure out how far Ryan will go in 3 hours, 3 x 28 = 84km. That is how far Ryan will be when Jenna starts driving. All she needs to do is close that 84km gap. You divide the gap by their speed difference to get the answer. 84/42 = 2. 2 hours for Jenna to catch up.

    Help! Dan has challenged Dave to a bicycle race. They will ride 3 miles out of town to the old light house, then turn and ride back. If Dan's speed in the race is 20 mph and Dave's speed is only 16 mph, obviously Dan will reach the light house first, turn back towards town, and pass Dave still riding toward the light house. How far, to the nearest foot, will Dave be from the light house when Dan passes Him? (1 mile = 5280feet)

    I came up with a slightly different formula for the last problem: 84 + 28x = 70x; 84 is the distance in km (3 x 28) that Ryan was ahead of Jenna when she first started driving. the answers is still the same but was easier to figure out; I need to find a video that provides more complex word problems relating to Distance, Rate, and time similar to the ones in my text.

  • @bcraftmath

    That is correct. Like many algebra word problems, there are definitely multiple ways of getting the same answer. I stuck with this chart technique as a universal approach to solving many types of DRT word problems. Check out this: idomath.weebly.com/make-a-request.html Make a request through that page and included some examples from your text. I'd be happy to do a few of them in a new tutorial. Thanks!

    Hi Brandon, thanks for the quick reply. The ones that typically give me the most trouble are like this: Stephanie goes uphill to the convenience store at a speed of 5mph. It takes her 20 minutes to get there. She then travels back the same way she came at a speed of 15 mph. What is her average speed for the entire trip to the store and back? The math probably won't work out to whole numbers exactly because I just pulled them out of thin air. The only thing I know about solving this type of problem is Avg speed= total distance divided by total time. But I always have trouble finding total distance. It frustrated me to no end because it's basic algebra but I'm not sure how to set up the problem. Look forward to the upload

    Hi, I would really appreciate if you could solve the following problem:The hare and the turtle were in a race. The hare was so sure of victory that he started a 24 hour nap just as the turtle got started. Turtle's speed= 20/ft, distance=530 (same for both). Hare's speed=90/ft and distance=530. Can the hare overtake the turtle if not then how long would the "race course" have to be for the race to end in a tie?Thanks

  • @bcraftmath

    @bcraftmath

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Contrarianexpressio I'm assuming 20 feet per hour is the turtles speed and 90 feet per hour for the hare. Turtle gets 24 hour head start since rabbit is napping. That means 24 hours x 20 feet per hour = 480 ft. The turtle has already traveled 480 feet before the rabbit takes off. The turtle has 530 - 480 = 50 feet left. At a speed of 20 feet per hour, it would only take the turtle 50/20 = 2.5 hours to complete the race. The rabbit would only travel 90 x 2.5 = 225 feet during that time. Therefore the rabbit would not catch up. HOWEVER.... if the speed is not 20ft per hour and 90 feet per hour, this would work out different. If you could tell me is is per hour, per day, or what, I could tell you how things would turn out differently.

    Brandon, sorry to come back to you so soon with a question! But I can't seem to frame a table for the question like this, could you help, please? A train after traveling for 50km meets with an accident and then proceeds at 3/4 of its former speed and arrives at its destination 35 minutes late . Had the accident occurred 24 km farther, it would have reached the destination only 25 minutes late. What is the speed of the train.

  • @bcraftmath

    @bcraftmath

    9 жыл бұрын

    jammerules80 The speed would be 48kmh. This one is hard to explain through typing and that's probably why some of the explanations you have been reading on forums is confusing. How is the slow truck's speed (4x) and the fast truk's speed [4(x+1)] combined equals 404 is the slow trucks actual speed? I mean, why was [4(x+1)] (the fast truck speed) was included in it?

  • @bcraftmath

    @bcraftmath

    8 жыл бұрын

    The 4x and 4(x+7) represents the distances of each truck. You need to add their distances together and set it equal to how far they are apart... which is 404.

  • @bushratahir4154

    @bushratahir4154

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Brandon Craft (CraftMath) 5:13 : How is the result of 4x+4(x+7) = 404 the slow truck's speed? You have combined the speed of the fast truck 4(x+7) in it which I think has nothing to do with the speed of the slow one?

  • @bcraftmath

    @bcraftmath

    8 жыл бұрын

    The speed of the slow truck is just "x" the speed of the fast truck is "x+7" since the fast truck goes 7mph faster than the slow. 4x is the distance the slow truck travels since rate x time = distance.... rate = speed = x and time = 4 4(x+7) is the distance of the fast truck. The equation 4x+4(x+7) = 404 is the sum of the two distances which equals 404 because we are trying to find the speed "x" in which it makes the distance between the vehicles 404. I did not label the equation as the speed of the slow truck. In the table, the speed of the slow truck x.

    Could you solve this please? A, B, K start from the same place and travel in the same direction at speeds of 30km/hr, 40km/hr, 60km/hr respectively. B starts two hours after A. If B and K overtake A at the same instant, how many hours after A did K start?

  • @bcraftmath

    jammerules80 The first thing I would do is deal with A and B. We'll worry about K later. Using the chart above, set up A and B. A's rate is 30 and B's rate is 40. A's time could be "x" and B's time would then be "x-2" since B started two hours AFTER A. Therefore the expression for A's distance would be "30x" and B's distance would be "40(x-2)". Set the distances equal to each other (similar to the second example I do where they play catch up). This would give you an answer of x = 8. Notice that both A and B traveled 240 km because A traveled at 30 kph for 8 hours = 30*8 = 240km and B traveled at 40 kph = 40*6 = 240km. Yes, B traveled for 6 hours since B left 2 hours AFTER A. So, both A and B traveled 240 km. Now we need to bring K back into the picture. K is going to need to travel 240km just like A and B. Since K travels at 60kph, it would take K 4 hours to travel that distance. Since A traveled for 8 hours, then K started 8-4=4 hours after A left. I hope that helps!

    ***** You are a lifesaver! Thank you, Thank you! Yes, I solved just like how you described in the video.You have no idea how amazingly simple you made the solution look like. I am preping for GMAT and trust me I have posted this question on a few forums and all I could see is bitterly ugly math. I hope you would not mind if I posted questions related to this topic in the future. Of the few math topics, speed/distance problems give me the jitters.
