Dispatches: Unholy War | Undercover In Afghanistan (Investigative Documentary) | Real Stories

An edition of the investigative documentary series, Dispatches. Six months after going undercover in Afghanistan to make the acclaimed film Beneath The Veil, Dispatches reporter, Saira Shah, returns to the land of her father to report on the fate of ordinary Afghans and investigates what drives the foot soldiers of the Taliban and Al Queda. In an epic journey that takes her through the mountain passes into the villages below, Saira meets people caught between the Taliban and the Northern Alliance and gains a unique insight into life at the centre of 'the first war of the 21st century'. Saira also reveals the mindset of the Taliban, their infatuation with the hardware of battle and their admiration for the suicidal courage of the Arabs who entered their country to join Bin Laden. Part of the War Without End series.

Only real democracy, real cultural growth can change things. More than weapons can schools, real help to improve the life conditions of common people. Per my understanding religious elites use jihad to keep their power on people. They don’t want people to study, they don’t want women to be independent, they want war because it makes them staying on power. It won’t be easy but if the majority of Afghan people want to live in peace, want their country to be prosperous they have to fight any kind of extremism, promote tolerance for different ideas, religions, genre, race, promote human rights; fight any type of Mafia and corruption.

This really is one of the best documentaries I've seen on Afghanistan. Frontline reporting, not trying to follow events from hundreds of miles away. We see the stunning scenery and landscape. Meet all the civilians effected by the fighting, its not done from an American perspective. Its limited in the sense it only captures one particular moment in 2001 but you get a sense of massive change underfoot. We meet refuges, fighters, smugglers, aid workers. The final bit with the 3 girls is really hard to watch. Its implied they were all raped by the taliban fighters and saw their mother get murdered. They would need a huge amount of psychological help rather than just a school lesson once a week. Nearly everyone in this video is probably still there now, they must have witnessed so much suffering and hardship.

This young woman is truly brave and the documentary bring backs memories. I've been in the tribal areas a lot myself in the 80's and 90's, just along the border between Peshawar and Quetta, but never inside Afghanistan, so I know how challenging it can be. After September 2001 it could very well mean one's death to travelling in the border areas. Pakistani army patrols, Talibans, al Qaeda, American drones, the drug mafia smugglers and opportunistic robbers - the law comes from the barrel of a Kalashnikov and it can mean a quick check out. When I travelled there before the war with the US, it was not as dangerous as today as long as one went with the locals. To travel there oneself wasn't healthy even back then. It was also against Pakistani law for foreigners to enter the tribal areas. Back then one could still go up the Khyber right to the border with a bodyguard the Khyber rifles or the Peshawar police sent along. It was an exciting place to visit as long as one knew to take care. Today it's not advisable to enter Afghanistan or even the tribal areas in Pakistan. Perhaps the situation cools down the coming years now when the US has left and if the Talibans are able to stable the country. I would love to visit Afghanistan one day without taking the risks of today. Afghanistan zindabad!
