With this new set, have you tried playing Jafar and Queen of Hearts with it? How did those villains flow with the reworked villains are they still playable? Does the reworked set interact well with the rest of the expansions?

Yes it will work with the other expansions, it's just reworks the Prince John, Captain Hook, Maleficent, and Ursula.😊

On the new rules, I was already doing the start off the board and "choose" your starting location. That is where your 1st turn takes place. The staggering of tokens works if you don't want to have everyone's turn going concurrently. I find concurrent turns make the game go faster, everyone just needs to announce what they are doing as they are doing it. Prince John now forces you to start going after all heros and imprisoning them, which he did in the movie a lot. Maleficent and Hook seem about same some wordage changes mainly. The removal of the locks are a big plus and makes Hook vanquish more heroes. Ursula's deck is much much simpler. I would buy a single set just for her. I don't think maleficent's was updated enough to warrant this redo. Jafar's needs to be redone with some tweaking instead. Queen of Hearts was very easy to play in the OG so I don't think she will get a re tooling. Overall I think I might get this much later but not atm, I have all the sets minus the Star Was Expansion and Marvel's Venom plus expansion 2. Love the game but how many more villains do we need?

thanks for the comment. it did seem odd to keep Maleficent if they weren't going to change her more. there is at least 1 more villain announced: Oogie Boogie as a single pack (like Venom was)

Do expansion still work with the new base game? I’m not a completionist so not worried about getting the queen and Jafar but we want more than 4 characters.

everything is 100% compatible. but keep in mind that also they are all Villanous games, the Disney, Marvel and Star Wars versions don't mix (ex: mix Disney base w/disney expansion but not Disney base with Marvel expansion)

That's really interesting that they just abandoned the whole concept of the Binding Contracts entirely. It definitely wasn't really working so I'm kind of glad to see that change. Ursula is such a cool character and one of Disney's best villains and was always the worst one in this game. It was just so oppressive to have one location locked at all times (not to mention how the palace was actually an insanely bad location: no discard and no play a card, it was only ever useful for a grow giant location to move a hero), having to play the binding contracts on the characters, getting into an Ariel Return to Form lock over and over again. The Binding Contracts just ended up not being used at all, you ended up just making a hero dumping ground where you kept all the heroes because Binding Contracts were too expensive to play when you already have very limited action economy in the first place. Your three available locations quickly get a hero above them and you end up only ever being allowed to do two actions a turn.

You could simply make change form remove the lock altogether

@@kingrex1931 I did used to do that. But that doesn't change the fundamental problem of it being a useless location. If you're not card cycling in this game every single turn you're behind. Whether by playing or discarding cards. It also doesn't change how fundamentally broken the binding contract mechanic was. It was a cute idea but it didn't work out as intended. It was made before they really understood how this game works.

@@jackskellingtonsora You could play your binding contracts as allowed in this version. They would cost 2 tokens, attach to the assigned location and could be used once. Then make the whirlpools allies with an attack value of 1 point but they work like the wolves in Gaston where they get a +1 for every wolf on the board and the two eels keep their value and they aren't removed when vanquishing. Just make the "Activate" into a play a card spot and make "Change form" into some type of deck cycling card. You can play the original game with these house rules without buying a whole new game. I think you should have to defeat King Triton though.

It seems like they just made Ursula an easier version of Hades. The other changes seem mostly unnecessary

So Ursula’s poor unfortunate soul can vanquish a hero?

in the newer version of Ursula's deck, Poor Unfortunate Souls let you defeat at hero. while its similar to a vanquish action its not 100% the same. Vanquishing requires Ally card with power equal to or greater than a Hero at the same location. Defeating a Hero, just removes them from the board. so same end result.
