An addendum to this video: not anything that contradicts what I say in this vid, but just two things that also give more context - Andreas Deja, the animator who designed Gaston who is also openly gay, has said that he based Gaston's physique on men he saw at a West Hollywood gym - The model for Gaston's animation (and a background painter for the movie) was Greg Drolette, a gay man ...But anyway, who's your fav Disney villain? Happy Spooky Season!🎃👻

I definitely agree, this type of hyper masculinity is something that would have been expressed by those who bullied me growing up. But masculinity is a complicated thing that I think has historically been both empowering and oppressive for LGBTQ people and I’ve also known people who were homophobic bullies who ended up coming out later. Similarly, a lot of LGBTQ masculinity finds solace in archetypes and aesthetics that are not usually the most welcoming to all LGBTQ people. And when they intersect with LGBTQ experience (like with trade), I think that’s interesting to look at and why Gaston’s queercoding is so interesting to me

This is gonna piss people off but...i HATED the 'gay' moment in the reboot. Not because of the moment itself (i'm part of the LGBTQ) but the fact it was hyped up so much and what did we get? LeFou dancing with anouther man for two seconds. Yes, it was heavily implied that LeFou had a crush/romantic feelings for Gaston but i read into it like 'if you didn't know, you wouldn't know." Seriously Disney. if you are going to hype up a moment in a movie...i want to see something much, much more. i really expected LeFou to marry anouther man by the end of the movie. What's extra adorable and a bit hilarious was that for O'Brien to get an actor with the appearance and physique he wanted for Rocky when it went to film, he had to cast a foreign model. In the original (only 1hr) play Rocky had lines. This fellow didn't know English (or it was limited), so they were cut. Gaston really is a well written character. The motivation for his villainy is so nuanced, especially when viewed in this light. He might actually be my favorite character in Beauty and the Beast now, whereas when I was younger it was the beast or Belle. The beast hurts openly - he literally becomes his darkness for all to see - but Gaston isn't even aware he's hurting or hurting others. He deliberately lives on the shallow surface refusing to see his own depths/darkness/subconscious. Truly unaware of his drives. Villiany - to me - is always about why the villian is the way they are, typically rooted in pain they refuse to acknowledge and/or can't escape. I always identify with the villian because that calls to me. I love a good villain because I think they need it more than the happy shiny characters who get their happily ever after.

I... actually always kind of felt that Gaston was a closeted gay person. While he can be interpreted mostly as being ruled by toxic masculinity and narcissism, the absence of him sexualizing Belle in even a remote way despite that being typical of his archetype and only viewing her as something that would suit his status screams that his primary concern is how other people perceive him. "How could Gaston be gay? He's married to the most beautiful girl in town!" He's the closeted gay kid who shoved other gay kids into closets when he was in school.

And honestly it’s kinda a mood😕 poor Lefou just wants love but can’t see that he’s being taken advantage of. He nearly freezes to death in the snow and for what? For Gaston. I really hoped the live action would explore and make explicit Gaston’s queer coding. I think it would be cool to have LaFou and Gaston’s journey parallel Belle and Adam. Maybe Gaston’s fighting so hard for the status quo, and against the beast stems from internalized homophobia, a conflicted part of himself. LaFou reflects the truth back at him, which makes him uncomfortable. I also thought Gaston shouldn’t die. Put LaFou, and the beast on the ledge at the end. Forcing Gaston to choose what’s more important; slaying the beast (fear/hate), or saving his friend (love).

I swear queer writers often get far more scrutiny placed on them over how they represent queer characters than non queer writers do. • @dolljunk

Whenever people say Gaston is straight purely because of a surface level reading of his character makes me incredibly frustrated. I think people who conflate Gaston's motivation to marry Belle as being emotionally, sexually or romantically attracted to her is missing the point of his villainy especially in his objectification of her. He ONLY wants to be with Belle because he only sees her as a prize to be won, prey to be tamed and something to be owned. The fact he has three busty women who openly lust after him, yet he picks the only unavailable and uninterested option adds a lot to a queer coded reading of his character in my opinion. He is a character that is permeated in queer culture and I really love this video exploring those aspects of him even if he is, ostensibly, a cis white able bodied man with a lot of social capital and privilege in his small town. Gay men definitely navigate this weird line between toxic masculinity and overt homophobia, and often can hurt other marginalised groups especially with how other aspects can intersect. Loved this video btw! My favourite Disney Villain is definitely a tie between Ursula and Maleficent.

Me as a comphet lesbian assumed the gay male fitness obsession was about survival, building strength and muscle into being able to defend themselves in a fight to combat the everyday fear of harassment just like my obsession to be skinny, feminine, dainty and unthreatening.

The Famous in NY clip really made this! You always manage to capture my Disney Nostalgia TM in a way that I needed to see it when I was little as a closeted queer child, and it’s really lovely to have it into adulthood. I like these more bite sized analyses too. Tom of Finland and the Leather community is the first thing I think of when I think of “trade.” He’s enough of a dreamboat for heterosexual cis women and cis men at the same time. And let’s be honest, Gaston is in a lot of Queer erotica just as a queer person. It’s almost full circle from Ashmans 80s gay male fantasy to how he’s expressed in online queer erotic a. I’m just not counting down the days for true well rounded out queer representation from this media monopoly company. As long as their share holders and CEOs are white het cis men, it won’t happen. And I’m not holding my breath.

I can't get enough of your coverage of Ashman. Such a pleasure every time you bring his work + name up. If you ever do up a modern equivalent of those 90s-style Tributes/Covers mixes covering his work from across his career, or if you want more breadth, exploring his influences & who he influenced too, I'd be lining up at Bandcamp or wherever with my metaphorical pickle jar of nickels for 1 of that item as soon as I could scuttle over. also +10, 20/10 for Excellent deep knowledge of Fabulous Cultural History.

This whole time I was thinking that Gaston was Like That because his animator gay man Andreas Deja was the one drawing him and modeling him off of body builders (my memory might be making this up, but I could swear there’s a story in there about looking at the bodybuilders on Venice Beach as the character type)--I completely forgot that Howard Ashman, also a gay man, wrote this guy’s big Gay Villain Song. Thanks for making this video :)

hi! sorry to bother you with a question/suggestion, but could you maybe concider making a video about Heathers? i feel like (especially in the musical) the Queer Coding is a little offputting. Mainly with Kurt, Ram, and their Fathers. Though the representation of Veronica and Duke’s relationship near the end was amazing, i still wanna see your perspective on things! and yes, i do know that Heathers isnt a Disney production, but i just think it would be cool to see -💕

    1. A detail of the song I don't think you note: every detail Gaston provides about himself is MORE true of the beast (substituting the Beast's house staff for townspeople, that is). I feel like that's at least partially intentional 2. Even though it's a villain song, it's been close to my heart since I was a kid because it's a celebration of masculinity/maleness for its own sake, without a primary relationship to womanhood... which, for trans men of any stripe, but esp. gay ones, is a balm for the damage inflicted by the combined forces of conservatives (who want us to be women) and theoretically-progressives (who.... usually also want us to be women) (even if that's not explicit, they usually believe that we Owe Women for..... "having the Privileged Gender" (which we usually don't get the benefits of)? "having helped us in the past" (as well as sexually harassing us for not conforming to their gender standards?) (etc.))

i have been thinking about this for AGES i went through a minor yet intense howard ashman media consumption phase after watching your video on why disney songs sound queer (i cried more than once it was great) and listened to howard sings ashman and his disney demos and everything and i have to add that my favorite cut lyric off the demo track for gaston is this one: - When I hunt, I sneak up with my quiver And beasts of the field say a prayer First I carefully aim for the liver Then I shoot from behind - Is that fair? - I don't care i literally think about it every time i listen to or think about gaston and it's just. incredibly funny to me LOL great video as always!!!

I guess the dark twist is - Gaston is that well-known phenomenon where a closet gay who hates the fact he's gay will push super heavily into anti-queer anything to the point it hurts those who have stepped out of the closet. (except we didn't get that reveal scene where the anti lgbt person is found with 5 male hookers or some other extreme wtf moment... wouldn't be Disney friendly)

I kinda want to chalk up the relationship between the two as somewhat of unrequited love. The idea that Lefou likes Gaston, but Gaston doesn't return the sentiment not necessarily because he isn't gay. Maybe because he is so infatuated with Belle that he doesn't realize that he is not actually not in love with her and only want to be with her to prove a point to everyone else.
