Disney BLOCKED his First HIT…Till He REALIZED He Was DATING the CEO’s Daughter! | Professor of Rock

Ойын-сауық

Coming up next, one of the most powerful moments with an artist that I’ve ever had in an interview. You’ll see why. Kenny Loggins has had huge hits in every decade since the 70s. Up next Kenny tells the story of two of his classic songs including one about the first song he wrote as a teenager, House at Pooh Corner, and how Disney had their lawyers block it... until a twist of fate willed it to the masses… decades later he wrote a new verse and called the song Return to Pooh Corner and it gave him one of the best selling children’s albums ever... Then in another story, Kenny breaks down discussing the most emotionally difficult song he ever wrote, The Real Thing. This is a must-see next on Professor of Rock.

I’m excited to bring you another episode from our series Revelations- where featured artists go deep on their greatest songs and albums. We’re coming up on 600 total interviews that I’ve done since starting this years ago and the most common question I get from people about what I do is who is my favorite interview and what was the greatest moment from an interview. Well, my answers change almost daily, but I will say that there have been times when I was blown away.
One of my favorite artists that i’ve gotten to know over the years is Kenny Loggins. Known as the The King of the Movie Soundtrack Kenny is much more than that. He’s had an impact on every generation. I mean think about it. He connected with Baby Boomers first as part of Loggins and Messina then he did the same with Gen-Xers when he dominated movie soundtracks like Top Gun, Footloose, and Caddy Shack, and then Millennials and Gen Z as the co-captain of Yacht Rock along with his connections to Archer, Grand Theft Auto and collaboration with the artist Thundercat.
Up next Kenny opens up about writing two songs including the song that started it all. House at Pooh Corner, which Kenny gave to the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band in fact in the video we also get insight from John Mcuen, a founding member of the band. They relate the story of how Disney wouldn’t allow the song to be recorded since they own the rights to Winnie the Pooh and how through a miracle they were able to get it done. He also tells about reinventing the song in the 90s for his famous children’s album.
That’s the first part, the second part of this video is where Kenny gets very vulnerable about creating a song that came as a way to explain to his young children why he and their mother were getting divorced. This was a very meaningful discussion and one of my favorite moments from an interview. You need to see it. It’s very healing. All of this is next on Professor or Rock.
Thanks for watching. Leave us a comment on your thoughts about the song and the interview. and tell us how a particular song helped you through a trial. What are your top Loggins tracks? Let us know in the comment section below. If you like our content click on the subscribe.

I was in Junior College and met a girl in chemistry class that I loved from afar. We would often hang out with the same group of friends, but I never could figure out how to take it to the next level with her. Over Christmas Break, I flew into Salt Lake City with my sister to see Kenny Loggins in concert. When he started singing those words, “Meet me halfway across the stars”, I thought my heart was going to explode. I came back to school knowing with all my heart that I wanted to be with that girl forever, but I was too late. She was now dating someone else. When graduation rolled around, we took one last photo together and said goodbye. I didn’t know if I’d ever even see her again. I didn’t even know what University she was planning on attending. Three months later, I was walking across this huge campus at the university I’d chosen to attend, when suddenly, amid the crowd of students scurrying to get to class, I thought I glimpsed a familiar figure. I didn’t even dare hope it was her, how could it be? But I blew off my writing class and started tailing her. I still didn’t know if it was even her, but I wasn’t going to let her out of my sight until I knew for sure. We I followed her the entire way across campus and finally decided that this was my moment. It was now or never, so I took a chance and called out her name like a drowning man calling to an angel to save me. “Rachelle!” She turned around and I looked at me with those deep, dark eyes and in that moment, she really did meet me halfway across the stars, and all those stars we’re aligned perfectly, just for us. We set a date for the very next night, then went out every night after that until our wedding six months later. We’ve been together now for 35 wonderful years, and every time I hear the song, “Meet Me Halfway”, I well up with tears just thinking of that wonderful sequence of miracles that allowed us to find each.

I had the great fortune of watching Mr. Loggins rehearse for an upcoming evening event over a weekend at Chesterfield Central Park in Chesterfield, Mo in about 2012. I happened to be walking around this new and lovely park and I sat on some rocks overlooking the outdoor stage. I saw some guys doing sound checks on their instruments and then a man came on stage and strapped on a guitar. Since I was a way off, I didn’t recognize who it was until he sang the opening lines of Danny’s Song and drew closer to make sure my ears were not deceiving me. I got right up front and at the time no one in the park was in this area so I sat there alone and listened to them rehearse. It was awesome. They also performed I’m alright. That was one of the coolest moments of my life to witness such a great songwriter, great story teller doing a rehearsal. Nobody came to run me off and I was so grateful for that moment.

The last tour Michael Jackson was planning was going to be called "This Is It." I always wondered if he or his people got Kenny Loggins' permission. Maybe they didn't need to do so, but I thought it would have been nice for them to think about what Kenny would think, as that was a very personal song about his father. Different songs named "This Is It" were Dan Hartman, Melba Moore and Jim Reeves hits, though smaller hits than Kenny Loggins'.

Had 7th row seats when they were doing their farewell tour, the only time I got to see them, but it was amazing. 2. Kenny was launching his solo career as I was finishing college and striking out on my own, and I was following his new music closely. Fond memries of a road trip I made with my best friend, wearing out the cassettes Celebrate Me Home and Nightwatch. 3. Next stage of life was motherhood and Return to Pooh Corner was a favorite to play for my two children. It was my go-to baby shower gift to other friends having their families. Now in my senior years, I still have Kenny's music from all of his eras in my very eclectic classic playlists. Pooh Corner still resonates.

My son was born two years before the movie "Forrest Gump". I still think it's a beautiful name!!☺😄

The Real Thing had always moved me and been my fav Kenny song until May 2008. I saw him in concert here in Denver on a Monday night. Some odd things happened at that concert I won't go into (spiritually odd) On Tuesday, I ended up in the hospital fighting for my life. Two emergency surgeries in 36 hours and a very, very long road of recovery in front of me. After a month in the hospital and moving into my long term healing phase, I found myself depressed and sometimes despondent. That's when - in attempt of self soothing - I heard "This is it" with brand new ears. It became a MANTRA to me during my recovery knowing only I, with my mindset, could get myself back to health. And I have. And I'm so grateful to Kenny. And to you, Adam. I found your channel a few months ago and I'm hooked. Thank you for what you do. Turning other people on to you as well! The more the merrier!

It's always jarring for me to think of Kenny for all his professional activities predating his solo career. To this day, I have difficulty thinking the same guy who recorded "Footloose", "Danger Zone" and "Meet Me Halfway" doing the 80s was the same one who gave us "Danny's Song". This additional layer of history regarding "House at Pooh Corner" and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band is something new in and of itself. So is the part where Kenny was recruited to collaborate with Richard and Robert Sherman.

I got my first speeding ticket at 18...going 84 in a 55 and pulled over by one of my dad's buddies (my dad used to be a deputy). He said one mile more and it would have been a felony...blaring on the radio. Danger Zone. My dad was so pissed - more so because he was embarrassed. That ticket cost me $80 back in 1995. I haven't gotten a speeding ticket since. Forever - was playing on the radio as I got out of the court house after the divorce court date where I lost my best friend to a path he needed to follow with another woman. Meet Me Halfway - got me through a long distance relationship and I'm Free my teenage years in a tiny Ohio town I detested. Kenny is a featured player in the soundtrack of my life.

While we chafed at Disney getting hold of our favorite book, they actually did a nice job with the movie, and Kenny did a remarkable job with his song. It blows me away that he wrote it at 18.

When my wife and I divorced years ago, I used The Real Thing to explain it to my daughter, because I was suddenly a single father of a two year old little girl. It was sometime before she could understand the reason, but she always knew that I did it for her. To this day that song brings tears to my eyes, not because of the relationship, but because of the heartfelt words and music that Kenny wrote. Simply beautiful.
