Certainly hope this spawns a Justin Wilson spin-off because he was the next huge chef PBS brought us that Julia paved the way for.

I adore the love story between Julia and Paul Child. They are so in love with one another, they are intimate and bawdy and funny together, and so damned smart!

I’m so glad this was made. I’ve loved Julia my whole life, glad to see her story brought to life with such love and care.

Knew and loved Julia for over 25 years. Always a pleasure cooking with her and just enjoying her company. I have lots of very funny stories and photos. She really was the best.

I watched Julia as a child. In 1999 I discovered Sarah Moulton and Nigella Lawson on the Food Network. Then I found Ina Garten. They all taught me how to cook efficiently and delicious food. My mom was a great foundation, but I didn't enjoy cooking until I found these women who are all good teachers.

Absolutely love the series. I especially love Sarah Lancashire as Julia. I actually find her more charming than the actual Julia.

I noticed the full page credits on Covid testers lol. First time I've seen that on a production.

The show is a wonderful TV novella making Julia a enjoyable show.

Given that this Podcast is sanctioned by HBO, why aren’t you using the actual clips from the series when you are playing the audio snippets? Instead, as we hear the snippets we watch other snippets and the visual snippets are the same ones over and over. I assume there is a reason for this choice, but I don’t see it since I assume HBO has the rights to display any chosen clips from an episode.

Julia is my granddaughters great great Aunt. Having powerful women like Julia in her genes, should give her good tools to design her future.

Super job on this companion podcast. Bravo! I’m not sure but I remember reading that Paul helped Julia carry her cooking items and wash up for her when she was on special news shows. So, that was different in this episode 1 as well. Thank you

Yes on spinoffs! More Alice and more Judith! And of course more seasons of Julia!

My favorite moment is when coco van told his mom about meeting julia, ngl.

I loved the character of Alice, but since I knew a black woman wouldn't have that job in the 1960s, it made me want to learn more about who was really doing the job. At least HBO made a series I could recommend to my 92 year old mother, and those are few and far between.

only watched episode one so far, but enjoyed it. The thing that bothered me was her using f-bombs as casually as they are used today and in the early 60's, there is just no way that would occur. It seems really out of place. just my opinion on that aspect.

Interesting... because this irked me about Mrs. Maisel as well, which Goldfarb also wrote. I grew up in the 1960s and '70s. I have a pretty salty vocabulary, and I don't remember the f word being tossed around so freely until around the '90s. I'm guessing it's to try to make the language feel more relatable to contemporary viewers, but it actually takes me outside the story when those f-bombs drop. Otherwise, I absolutely love the show (and Mrs. Maisel too).

Julia Child swore a fair amount - it’s in her writing (the books of letters Avis published for example). People did swear in the early 60s, we just didn’t see it on TV or in film from that era which gives a really false impression. Books written in the early 60s are often as swear-y as ones written today tbh.

Has "Dishing on Julia" been cancellel?

Can't watch this. I already pay for Xfinity cable. Verizon internet. Netflix. Amazon prime. And Starz. I am one person whose savings is diminishing because of all of this, and I'm over 60 years old so I could be on the verge of paying for a massive health issue. So, I wish I could see this as an older American who saw Julia's earlier shows as a child on PBS, but I can't afford these separate streaming services to see her actual story. I want to see Ted Lasso too, but can't afford that. Everything is on a different "platform" and every new "hit" is on something different that I don't pay for. They are killing us financially bit by bit.

@Sassycatz I wrestle with this too. I use KZread TV instead of cable, and I don't have it all year long, just month to month when things I want to watch are on. I also have Amazon Prime. I get a la carte cable networks through those two, which I can stop and start as I want if nothing appeals to me. I also have separate apps for Hulu and Netflix. A $25 Chromecast device lets me cast any of these from my tablet to my TV -- no cable needed, which saves me money, and again, I can can pause it in months where I have other things going on. I also have the PBS Passport app. For $7 per month, which goes to my local public television station, I have access to hundreds of PBS shows, including The French Chef. I think you get a larger, more varied selection of PBS with the app than via broadcast TV.

YES, I think many of us are experiencing this SAME frustration, AND DEFINITELY the hit to our budgets. I have tried to the strategy of cooperating with family and friends to share streaming services. One member has the Netflix account, another the HBOmax ... etc.

What a shame it was canceled after 2 seasons. 😢

Love the show. Love Julia Child. But she was not the OG celebrity chef on TV. That belongs to Lena Richard.

So wait. You say it was important to tell her story and but then said it's an Amadeus take which means it isn't real at all because Amadeus was nonsense. Look, I don't have a problem with diversity but at leat be honest. You wanted to include a fictional woman of color who was important to Julia's career. Claiming that she represents all these other people, come on. This is so disingenuous and quite frankly, it's why woke is derided. No one wants to actually defend it on it's own merit. It's always another reason why its important And for the record, I like her character. I like her a lot. You do her a disservice by trying to find excuses.

I agree. Watched the episode and it's jarring the attention to detail from set and costume to make it realistic but then the obvious woke casting and characters. It's made for generations younger to rewrite history

🦅 I personally do not care what “race” a person is - when they “play” a character. We = Human Beings, ALL of us are = INCLUDED INTO THE HUMAN RACE 🦅 Inclusivity 🦅 I LOVED Episode 1 …. 🦅Thank You🦅

@@maijaliepa119 I don't either. As i said I think the character was great. My point was how they address it. They can't say it was important to tell Julia's story and then call it an Amadeus approach. Amadeus wasn't even remotely accurate. Claiming the character represents all these different people. Just say you wanted to include a more diverse cast even though it's not 100% historically accurate because it's important to include the talents of minority actors as they have been deprived opportunity for far too long. That is the honest answer. If people are going to be woke and accept the label then own it. People aren't going to be happy that the character exists. They cannot be reached and made to like it. I would much rather promote the benefits of diversity than try to cloak it in misdirection

@@timothy4664 🌻 Thanks for your intelligent reply-words. Honestly, I stopped listening to the presentation here - so I did not take the time to listen to all of what they said. I guess I just enjoyed the presentation, Episode 1 - the way the men in that office treated that particular character and the other women, is how many/most(?) women have been treated in their jobs. I’m not as intellectually gifted as you ladies discussing this, sigh, gotta be honest here.🌻 I loved how “Hamilton” broadcasted “diversity”… human diversity. And, I kinda put that scene (inclusivity as being a natural part of life) onto Episode 1 of this series. We are in this all together - no matter what.🦅Thank You🦅PS: the language was a surprise, and maybe “Cambridge Women” did say formerly “unmentionable” words… There was an “under-ground” poetry and life-style movement(s) out there in that part of the country and also on the West Coast, San Francisco (Lawrence Ferlinghetti). Just remembered - these folks were pre-Hippie, they were called Beatniks. Surely these Cambridge Women had heard these words - and maybe delighted in using them here and there.💙🌍💙🌏💙🌎💙🌻LOVE EPISODE 1🌻

Horrible! I hate these people talking over Julia. Unlike Julia they have zero appeal. Almost borderline rude.

for pete's sake... leave the color of your skin out of this story... it was never there... leave off women's rights... this kind of adding today's "issues" dishonestly is tiring. Julia's charm was simply her wonderful bigger than life personality.

People had skin color back in the 1960s. As for *black* people, there were black people in Boston in the 1960s to, some of them even had professional jobs, so no need to be triggered. It's a story about a 50 year-old woman starting a new career in 1962. I don't know how you can leave the difference in attitudes toward women out without telling an essentially false version of her life.
