Discworld City Watch Books Ranked! | There's No Such Thing as Too Much Vimes
Ойын-сауық
I rank the 8 City Watch books, probably having them in different orders than you do. I've read all of them except the last multiple times and this is how I feel as of the last readthrough of them. I was going to release this on the 25th of May because that would have been poignant, but I didn't have any other video ready to be edited.

It's always a treat to hear you discuss Discworld, Allen! I really need to continue in the City Watch Books beyond Guards! Guards!, which I loved (as you know since we discussed it). Would you consider doing a similar video for any of the other Discworld books, such at the Witch Books?

@@TheLibraryofAllenxandria I just finished that one myself and was bummed to find I had outpaced your content! Looking forward to your review!
I just finished Thud and I thought it was incredible. Finally we get a vampire in the watch and Angua gets some competition in the looks department of watchmen. It ushers in the beginning of the end of the forever feud between dwarf and troll. Vimes is the angriest hes ever been so far. No lie I cried thinking of Cuddy and how he would have felt to see the cave of kings with Detritus by his side. The events in this book are important as hell. Just my thoughts. It's funny how everyones ranking of these books are so different from one another. I think it shows just how good these books are.

Love your Discworld videos! Vimes is my favourite character ever and I'll never get bored rereading this series. I feel like The Night Watch is my favourite. I just loved finally seeing Vimes' origin story. Men at Arms also has a place in my heart for the new cast of characters and the friendship portrayed in it. I totally agree with you on any book in this series being better than any other book that I've read) P.S. Vimes and Vetinary are the best duo.
Sam "The Butcher" Vimes has a nice B story as an ambassador in Monstrous Regiment, one of my favorite stand alones.

@@grantmaxfield7301 Maybe it reads better if you haven’t already read most of Pratchett, but there is so much re-treading of old ground, even repetition of old phrases or jokes, and people acting OOC, that I found the whole those thing quite upsetting as you could see “Terry Pratchett” as we had known and loved him was no longer behind it.
I was just thinking I hope there's a City Watch rank video, and lo and behold, Allen does not disappoint! Yours was the first place I was going to check, lol, as I know you love the series.
I’ve read almost all of discworld. I now listen to them on audiobook, but I only listen to the night watch stories on a regular basis. I’m a gardener and I can just let them run all day and they keep me going. Vimes is a brilliant character, but he is balanced beautifully by Carot and the Patrician.

Completely agree. The self-destructive tendencies are tempered and/or focused by Vetenari and Carrot
Excited to read Guards Guards this year! It'll be my first foray into Discworld so hearing you talk about it helps me know what to expect :)
Love this! I have only read through feet of clay but I love them. I have all of the watch books except for the last one at this point and plan to continue them this summer. Thanks as always for the great content sir
Finished Guards! Guards! recently bc your overwhelming enthusiasm. I’m so excited to continue this series! Cheers, Allen!
Sam Vimes is my favourite Disc-World character - well, there's DEATH. Nothing works without DEATH, especially no murder. Vimes would be without job, if DEATH didn't do his job. Just imagine: all those ghosts on Discworld would hang around their bodies and complain about who killed them.
I love the Watch books and Vimes is one of my favorite characters ever! Great video!
I really need to get to Feet of Clay. Guards! Guards! and Men at Arms were so good.

yes you do. It has one of my favorite scenes in the whole series. It involves Sgt. Colon and bull riding.
Yaaayyy there's never enough Discworld videos! Sad you put Jingo!, which is one of my fabs, at number 7, but everyone has their opinion :)
@TheLibraryofAllenxandria

Yeah, I'm in the minority I think on Jingo. I know many for whom it's the favorite of the 1st 4. It just never quite lands for me the way I want it to. But even then, it's like trying to pick the best gemstone in a row of gemstones.
This was amazing! Every time I hear you talk about the themes in the City Watch books or about Sam Vimes, I want to return to the series. I feel like Abercrombie also explores the warring themes and patriotism, which I know you said doesn't resonate with you as much, but it's interesting how the combination of fantasy and humor brings the obvious to light.
When my daughter and son in law were reading Jingo I had to explain the definition of jingoism. Not a word they'd come across. Yes 25th of May would have been good. Did you wear a sprig of lilac
WHERE’S MY COW!!!
Nicely done! I'm shocked that Guards! Guards! is not #1!
I'm (re)reading Discworld in pub order this year since I've never actually read it in any sort of order before and I'm curious to see how it influences some of my favorites. I read Thud! before reading The Fifth Elephant back in the day, so hearing your take on it makes me think that reading order probably influenced my love for it. It should be interesting to see if that's the case. Well, that plus a decade or so of added wisdom/jadedness
You’ve made me want to read all of them - have only read Guards! Guards! of The City Watch, which I did love
And now i need to reread ALL of them!! Night Watch is definitely the best but they are all so good. It did take me awhile to finish Snot, but once i really got into it, i enjoyed it. Is enjoy really the right word? It is quite dark. It broke my heart several times. I loved seeing Vimes seek justice. And always getting home to read to Little Sam. ❤
Hear me out: Snuff is fantastic. Vetinari getting angry is a spectacular character development. Vimes and Vetinari are the same. They just chose different paths. I love seeing the collective anger in that book. Also, probably projecting, but I feel like it was Sir Terry coping with his fate. Separately. Many moons ago when I started following you asked me what my favorite Discworld book to which I said impossible BUT Night Watch was my favorite Watch book. Welcome to team Night Watch, sir. 😊 It’s a perfect Watch book. Loving these characters and many series rereads has further endeared it to me.
I thank you for using the clip for the Pirates line

I just finished Men at Arms and it was a 5 star read for me. I do believe that Guards! Guards! was the funnier of the two books but the themes addressed in MAA just pulled me into the story a little more. This is only my second book that I've read in the series though. Excellent video Allen.

I definitely concur that MoA is the more thematic and had GG not been my introduction to my favorite series, I'd have it higher also. Nostalgia takes this one for me
Guards Guards! is my least favorite by far (so far). I’m on The Fifth Elephant right now, so I’m excited for Night Watch next! 😊
Talking about Vimes always brings out the passion in you. Looking forward to meet him and start my Discworld journey.

I think I pretty much agree with your rankings. I read these a couple years ago so I'm a little fuzzy on the details, and what happened in which book. I've not read Night Watch for a good while, but I remember an odd description of a particular scene concerning the Torturer. When Vimes first confronts him he's described as being 'naked to the waist and wearing a black hood'. A little later it describes 'a spot of blood on his shirt'... Did I misremember the text or was it an implication that the Torturer was doing something Really Nasty to the prisoners..?

The unmentionables are widely believed to torture anyone who is left with them. It’s assumed a lot of them die as many are never seen again.

@@NickBarban The implication in the text was that the torturer was naked from the waist down when Vimes found him, therefore he had been raping the prisoners as well as physically torturing them. That Vimes didn't take the opportunity to smash his head in when he had the chance is a tribute to Vimes strength of character.
