discovering WW2 bunkers
i went for a walk in the new forest and found an old WW2 bunker. obviously I wanted to explore inside. So much history in the new forest and i plan to find more of these hidden bunkers and shelters.

Creepy bunker in the new forest

This is the wartime airfield Battle HQ of RAF Ibsley. Most WW2 airfields had them, it was where operations would have been conducted in the event of a German invasion and the airfield overrun by enemy forces. It is unique in having twin observation cupolas offering a 360 degree view of the outside world through the narrow slit around them. Inside would be the main room for the defence officer, a messengers room and a telephone exchange, or PBX. Toilet facilities were primitive, just an Elsan chemical toilet. Surrounding the BHQ can be seen the remains of a defensive trench, and gun pits (large drainpipes sunk into the ground).

Sounds like you have a lot of knowledge about the ww2 airfields. How do you know all this??

@@lukeoxford Reading mostly, and the internet of course, searching for info. on specific places, and the Pillbox Study Group Forum www.tapatalk.com/groups/pillboxstudygroup/index.php . All mostly borrowed from other people's knowledge! Lol. Another useful website is Atlantikwall, particularly the section on UK RAF airfields: www.atlantikwall.co.uk/# (click on the Menu and choose "Great Britain"). Cheers!
