Exploring inside an abandoned hotel with everything left behind. The Royal York located in Ryde on the Isle of Wight.
Derelict Art Deco hotel Built in 1938, the Royal York Hotel in Ryde, Isle of Wight closed down in 2006 due to a dwindling numbers of visitors.
The Hotel is one of the few remaining Art Deco buildings on the Isle of Wight., however has since been left to sadly slowly rot away over the last ten years, much like the Grand Hotel in Sandown:

I used to work there as 19 years ago as a cabaret singer, entertaining the guests with the resident band. Fond memories of this hotel. So sad to see it like this.

I painted every bedroom here in 1966/67. Les Meddick was the manager - it was packed with holiday makers in the season. The staff used to sleep in the tank room on the roof. Reminds me of The Midland Hotel in Morecombe that has been bought back to life!

I worked here as duty manager in 2003/05. It was a tired hotel then but I loved working there. I have run around those corridors, up and down the stairs for miles and miles. The roof terrace had amazing views and the ballroom had a lovely floor. It's such a shame that he let it fall into this state.

dam shame it's left to rot, especially a nice looking building like that, the isleofwight council should be ashamed of them self's , ie, business rates to high that's why most of the time places like that have the doors closed for good. . nice filming matey.

Thanks Neil! It is a massive shame to see yet another iconic island building in this state. From what I can gather (from reading around) the reason for it closing down was because of dwindling bookings, I do also recall it becoming quite sad and run down before it did finally close, fortunately it does look as though the owners are in the process of renovating it and hopefully they'll retain the original art deco charm.

+Bushmaster Pictures lets hope so, as there's far more of our beautiful island buildings that have been demolished by insanity and replaced with modern crap in wich will most probably be knocked down in 30yrs time, we need to keep our iconic buildings because when there gone there gone,

Thou I enjoy watching Abandoned IOW Vids it also saddens me watching the decaying state of old venues , Hotels and holiday camps on the Island due to lack of money or interest and how the place has changed from coming here on Holiday in the 70s with my Parents to living here from 2006. Back in the day we had a floating bridge from Cowes to east Cowes that worked, Holiday camps and Hotels that were always packed ,Amusement arcades for the kids as well as bucket loads of Nightclubs all over the Island (so I've been told ) I doubt very much if Abandoned IOW will ever be Videoing the abandoned Wightlink or red funnel ferries any time soon as there will NEVER be a fixed link to and from the Mainland but maybe if those greedy Ferry Firms made it cheaper the tourist industry on the island might flourish .

Any chance of a rundown of your camera equipment and setup?

  • @AbandonedIsleofWight

    @AbandonedIsleofWight

    8 жыл бұрын

Yeah sure :D The camera I used for this video is the sony a7s. The a7s is my primary camera of choice for these kind of videos as it performs really well in lowlight. The lenses I used were the Sony 16mm f2.8 Pancake lens with the Sony fisheye adaptor, I also used the Canon 24-105mm f4. For the majority of the moving shots I had the camera mounted on the Nebula 4000 gimbal, my footage is usually a bit more stable than in this video, the footage is a tad wobbly because I didn't fully charge it before heading out. As for lighting I use a cheap dslr mountable led panel, its powered by 4 AA batteries and will usually last the length of a shoot.

  • @voodoosoldier77

Cheers for that! Some decent equipment you're running but you're not lying about the low light quality because it gives off a really eerie atmosphere and even shots of the road leading up from the bus station and out towards the pier was amazing! Love watching these videos, makes me want to go out and see these places with my camera!

Its not the clearest, April 9th 1958... Although its not the oldest by a long way! There are stacks of documents and letters in that attic dating back as far as the 30's, it was an amazing find and I could have spent hours up there. I had really hoped to be able to go back and photo some in order to preserve a record, however the site is now sealed. I only hope that these are not just thrown out :(

  • @carolinewaite7185

Waah really!! How wonderful it would be to preserve them. Could you get a preserving order on them or maybe why were you there in the first place will rear it's ugly head I guess. I was thinking how nice it would be to take it back to the 30s and have piano music, cabarets and murder mystery weekends! A romantic at heart - hate seeing wonderful architecture going to waste. What a shame it's now sealed. :( My boyfriend's mum was a Front of House Assistant Manager there in around 2006 but it was a tip then with a few rodents like Buckingham House lol!!!! Thank you for reply and enjoyed video. looking forward to next one. :)

Well.....when it's gone ,well , you know the rest. Deco is so unbelievably, unbearably drop-dead-gorgeous. Can't be allowed to go to hell in a handbag. But probably will . We'll never see the likes again , doubt we could even build it any more, save for lacklustre , watered down shades of it . Needs saving "as is" , fixtures, fittings , the lot. 'Bout time we had a national Deco museum . Right here, here's yer place ! Please.....not more bastardised yuppie hives. Then again , the national sense of confidence and hope for the future that drove the design ethos is long-gone , too .

This video was taken some time ago, back in May last year. The owner had secured the site and way in has been boarded up, thick grease had also been applied to all the "Climbable" areas around back. This was back in July and they've been doing quite a lot of work inside since so there may be a way in, I haven't been back to check. If you are going I would advise being very careful.
