Discovering and Following Meaning in Your Life | Ajahn Brahm | 3 May 2019

What is the meaning of your life? Ajahn Brahm says that the meaning of life is what you give to it and Ajahn teaches us that one of the best meanings you can give life is caring and serving for others. Came here to watch a talk about following meaning in life and found something much much greater. This is why I love Ajahn Brahm. Every now and then there are words coming out of his mouth that are just so powerful and they hit you so hard. Thank you!

I was listening to this on earphones. At the brake fluid joke, I busted out laughing. In a library.

meaning of life is to care (life is so fragile), a self discovery (ask yourself why?), to push beyond the boundaries ("I can do it"), to discover new ways of looking at and understanding things (that no books or teachers can teach you) Thank you Ajahn Brahm.

Wise but capable of being silly. I love his teachings. I am not sure Ajahn Chah did “ the full job on him”, but never the less I love him. “But when I know that the glass is already broken, every minute with it is precious.”

This Dharma talk is really spot on for me. I, too, can say thank you for your words of wisdom and love and care. I took the precepts on line with you last year and since then the Dharma has come alive in me in ways I never could have imagined. I so wish I could be in CA on the west coast of my country the USA in June and see you. There is no way. I am reading the book Falling is Flying and I sense that Ajahn Chah would have done exactly what you did in agreeing to ordain Nuns. Thank you. 🙏🙏🙏

After five years of contemplation the pilgrim was ushered in to see the Dalai Lama. "What is it that you wish to know?" asked the Dalai Lama The pilgrim asked, What's the meaning of life Father? The Dalai Lama smiled and said, "Life is like a beanstalk, isn't it?" -Told in the lyrics of the song 'In Held Twas In I' by Procol Harum I thought the answer was a bit cheap but I liked the story. Forward about 30 years and I realized a bit better take, Life is exemplified by a bean plant' growing to maturity. But for humans it does not have to be about luck. We learned to plant a bean stake to improve the bean plant's chances to grow strong and healthy. To us we can take an active part in the direction of our life, we can direct our own future which fills our present moment with intention and purpose.

John Here “Depression...??” Of course NOT. Not to ever be born again means enlightenment! We’ve been given this life. But most of us squander it by our pursuits of meaningless things ... and the result is everlasting rebirth.

Maybe one of the moderators on this page can answer this but I'd really like to take a trip to Austrailia and meet Ajahn Brahm. I've been a Buddhist since my freshman year of college. I really just want to shake his hand and smile at him so he can see all the good he's done for me. I'll gladly pay for it but is this possible? His words (particularly his parable of Pooh) really put things in perspective for me during a dark time in my life. I listened to about 3 or 4 of his expositions on repeat for about 5 months straight. Really helped support me in pushing past some bad things. I just wanted to say thank you.

I’m 63. And to ask ... “ Did these 63 years of living on this planet have any meaning?” To answer this question, I’ll start from the beginning. I was born. Did that have any meaning? Did my being born have any meaning? It did. What was it? To be born!!! It’s similar ... to this ant under my feet. One moment it appears to be crawling mindlessly here and there ... and the next moment, when my foot lands on it, it’s not. Did life have a meaning for the ant? Yes! What was it? it was to get squished!! The meaning of life for that ant was to die .... death by getting smashed!!! Therefore, the meaning of life for me is to die! So what’s the meaning of life for me ? ..... DEATH! Does it matter how I meet death? Does it matter how I die? Maybe. IDK. I suppose it doesn’t really matter whether I die of cancer or from a gunshot wound. The ultimate meaning is to die ... death!

You don’t get “addicted” to benzodiazepines. Your body gains a tolerance to the drug and stopping taking it without slowly tapering is exceedingly dangerous. This is never the fault of the person prescribed to. She put herself at great risk and post withdrawal syndrome is horrendous.

All these deep thoughts on the meaning of life, wheras I wonder how many monks have a unibrow, i dont see it often among monks. Would a unibrow interfere with one's third eye? Why dont scientists look into this? Do Bhuddists question this? Indeed would it be considered a third eye moustache?
