Develop Your Heart | Ajahn Brahm | 2 Dec 2016

So much time and effort and money is invested these days into developing our intellect. Yet we still have manifold problems in life, the root cause of which is social, emotional, and even spiritual. Ajahn Brahm's advice is to develop the heart, and in this talk he explains why and how to develop the heart.

    Ajahn Brahm's teachings have literally saved my life. I was stuck in emotional pain and it manifested in the body and i got very sick, i sought out Buddhism as 30 years ago i heard the Buddha had said 'we suffer because we don't accept what is and, our attachments to things create suffering'. I never knew just what these meant in action until I discovered Ajahn Brahm. I was looking into Tibetan Buddhism as its so visible but understood nothing. It was Ajah Brahm's teachings that made me understand the Buddha and Dukka and non self. To say I am grateful is an understatement. Every day I send him Metta. May all beings be at peace.

    That's unfortunate fudge, but hopefully the constructive criticism can help Ajahn better tailor is message. I think he taks about himself a lot because that's where most of his stories and experience come from: his own life. I'm glad you can see through it though and find the material that does benefit you.

    "An old story speaks about a similar problem. A devoted meditator, after years concentrating on a particular mantra, had attained enough insight to begin teaching. The student's humility was far from perfect, but the teachers at the monastery were not worried. A few years of successful teaching left the meditator with no thoughts about learning from anyone; but upon hearing about a famous hermit living nearby, the opportunity was too exciting to be passed up. The hermit lived alone on an island at the middle of a lake, so the meditator hired a man with a boat to row across to the island. The meditator was very respectful of the old hermit. As they shared some tea made with herbs the meditator asked him about his spiritual practice. The old man said he had no spiritual practice, except for a mantra which he repeated all the time to himself. The meditator was pleased: the hermit was using the same mantra he used himself -- but when the hermit spoke the mantra aloud, the meditator was horrified! "What's wrong?" asked the hermit. "I don't know what to say. I'm afraid you've wasted your whole life! You are pronouncing the mantra incorrectly!" "Oh, Dear! That is terrible. How should I say it?" The meditator gave the correct pronunciation, and the old hermit was very grateful, asking to be left alone so he could get started right away. On the way back across the lake the meditator, now confirmed as an accomplished teacher, was pondering the sad fate of the hermit. "It's so fortunate that I came along. At least he will have a little time to practice correctly before he dies." Just then, the meditator noticed that the boatman was looking quite shocked, and turned to see the hermit standing respectfully on the water, next to the boat. "Excuse me, please. I hate to bother you, but I've forgotten the correct pronunciation again. Would you please repeat it for me?" "You obviously don't need it," stammered the meditator; but the old man persisted in his polite request until the meditator relented and told him again the way he thought the mantra should be pronounced. The old hermit was saying the mantra very carefully, slowly, over and over, as he walked across the surface of the water back to the island. " -from Dharma-haven.org 😌❤️🙏

    five rare things in the universe or world said buddha. 1. To be born as a human being is rare. There are many obstacles that prevent someone to be born as a human being. Even though there are billions of human beings, all the odds are against their birth compared to other living beings in this planet. It is even more difficult to live in good health that helps focus the mind on learning Dhamma. 2.Birth of a Buddha also is very rare. According to Buddhist tradition only seven Buddhas are listed by name in the Buddhist text such as Samyuttanikāya, Dīghanikāya.They are Vipassi, Sikhī, Vessabhu, Kakusand, Konāgama, Kassapa, and Gotama. Each of them has taken prepared very long time to attain Buddhahood. 3. Right moment to practice is very difficult. The right moment is obstructed by eight situations. Hell realm, animal realm, ghostly realm, birth in a realm without perception, birth in a region where nobody can understand four noble truths, birth with mental handicap that prevents from comprehending anything, birth with total confused state of mind and birth during the period when the Buddha’s dispensation is not existing. 4.Saddhamma is even more rare. Dhamma-anicca, dukkha and anatta-exist all the time. Recourses for learning Noble Truth are very rare. They are mixed with fake truth. The Buddha has given two very meaningful similes. One is a simile of summoning drum (Āni Sutta) in the discourse called Āni Sutta. The other is counterfeited gold. When imitation gold comes to the market you don’t know the difference between real gold and counterfeited gold. So, the value of real god goes down. Listening to Dhamma is difficult not only because of the appearance of the Buddhas in the world is difficult but also those who listen do not have proper attitude to listening. It is very difficult to focus the mind on the Dhamma teaching. One needs to be highly motivated to listen to Dhamma with undivided mind.

    In one talk, Ajahn Brahm says "Love the tiger, but at a distance." So stay safe. But revenge is never ok. I believe the Buddha said something like "Holding on to anger is like grasping a hot coal with the intent of throwing it at someone else; YOU are the one who gets burned." I don't think you have to forgive (at least immediately), but "letting go" of the hurt for your own sake is wise. I hope this helps and I am sorry you were hurt.

  • @AllenRose

    @AllenRose

    It is very common for everyone to say "love" and "forgive", but very difficult to practice. In my town a very well respected spiritual teacher who were teaching forgiveness for over 40 years were not able to forgive a guy who rapped and then killed the teacher's daughter. What I am saying it is extremely difficult to practice and requires a lot of support and prayers from people around. My heart goes with this gentleman and wishing him peace in these very difficult moment. Open your hearth and let Buddha guide you.

    I'm stil learning buddhism and I have a question regarding the stance on debate. I believe it to be a good way to find the truth and to resolve issues, and even though sometimes we get caught up in arguments and anger, debates can be a very productive thing towards our understanding of the universe. How does a Buddhist see this? Thank you.

    Debate is never productive in the sense of religious faith, it only leads to division instead of unity and peace. Thats the common phenomenon we see among the Christians and Muslims.

    I was a Buddhist and Ajahn Brahm was my favourite teacher, he led me to the meditation that enlightened me with the light of life: "Jesus, the door of my heart is open to you." Now I know that to have unconditional love for all sentient beings, one must love God with all your heart, soul and mind. I pray for you with love my Buddhist friends. Keep seeking and you will find.

    I enjoy Ajahn Brahm's commentary greatly, but he seems to have moved away from teaching the Dharma and into New-Agey thought. This year's sermons haven't mentioned any of the suttas, Buddhist philosophy, etc... just feel-good stories. What changed?

    Hi Julius, Are you aware of the (usually every other) Sunday afternoon sutta classes from Ajahn Brahm, Ajahn Brahmali and others [live-streamed and on KZread]? Increasingly, Friday night attendees are graduating to these. [Wish they could do them every Sunday!] Just go to the BSWA website and click Calendar in the top menu to see what's on and when. There's also a lot of their recorded sutta classes that can be downloaded: Downloads in the top menu, then Sutta Studies in the right-hand menu. They include at least half of the 152 suttas in the Majjhima Nikaya. www.dhammaloka.org.au/

    I've also found that, after having bought 3 of the Nikayas in print, which are rather large (each up to 2000+ pages) and thus pricey, they are handy but not essential. Each of the speakers will read one or a few paragraphs of the sutta, then pause for his commentary, the read the next bit, etc. So the tape will virtually contain the entire sutta text.
