DISCOVERING | 2023 Deer Harvest

Episode 72 - I sit down with Chad Stewart of the MI-DNR Wildlife Division and a few sportsmen to talk about the 2023 Deer Harvest which could very well be the lowest deer harvest on record in the Upper Peninsula. What does this harvest estimate mean about the U.P.'s deer herd, what factors are at play and what can be done to improve deer hunting in the Upper Peninsula?

Sold our camp. Have hunted the UP every year since 1989. Hunted downstate in 2023. Killed a very nice buck too. I miss the UP but unless things change, I won’t be hunting there again.

Wisconsin deer hunters are also suffering. We have a huge problem with predators, especially timberwolves. As long as they are poorly managed, this problem will never end.

This was the worst year of deer hunting in my 23 years of hunting iron county. We have more wolf trail cam pics than deer by a 3 to 1 ratio. This is my last year hunting in the UP as I'm selling my land. This is only getting worse, and I'm done wasting my limited time

I live 24/7/365 in the south-central wilderness U.P. - a destination for deer migrating out of the Lake Superior snow belt. As usual, no sign of yarding in this region and I'm seeing steady deer numbers again this winder with another mild winter in progress. This season from gun season through muzzleloader season, I attribute my low deer sighting numbers during shooting hours to nocturnal movement caused by the unusually mild temperatures. An alarming observation I do take away is noticeably low fawn density. I see it in the sign when snow tells the story. Deer are foraging on my property and around my residence all year - fawn numbers are clearly down after a number of mild severity winters leading to this year. Black bears are a major fawn depredation predator. Because they do most of their damage at night and don't howl or travel in packs, this is a shadow predator. While bear guides/hunters with dogs are busy here starting late summer through the season - my bear sign occurrence frequency is noticeably up in recent years. A preponderance of evidence from many corroborating sources is developing - wolf/bear/coyote & stray dogs depredation is taking a toll on our herd. We should demand action from the DNR. I don't hunt bears, but this cumbersome point accumulation system amounts to a deterrent from bear hunting to a lot of us. Also, like states in the west - it's time to turn management of the wolves over to this state!

Well said, I agree. The warm weather during the first week of rifle season was unlike any I can remember in the western U.P. My camp in baraga co hit 68 degrees on Nov 16th. Deer movement was minimal and mostly at night. We do get a few wolf pics every year on trail cams but not many. They seem to travel a large area. Our group of 3 hunters took one deer the first week of rifle season. I returned for the opener of muzzle load season and took a buck on the second day. We were back to normal December weather with some snow. Deer should be in great shape coming out of the record mild winter of 2024.

Good episode that's right on point with the deer issues in the U.P. Gary Gorniak and George Lindquist certainly passed along some great information. Like usual though, Richard Smith contradicts himself by first saying that we need fewer bears to build up the deer population and then he goes on about how we have to many deer now in the U.P. and need to kill more. Chad Stewart provided no real solutions to the U.P. deer issues even though it is his job to do so.

3:25 What? You mean they can't just open a file drawer and see their own numbers from 2020, 2021 and compare them to the reported numbers from 2022 and 2023? Or, is it they don't want to tell us how far off the numbers are. 6:38 Michigan used to pay a bounty on coyotes. They weren't a problem in those days. 6:44, 9:23 I remember some years ago, the DNR said bears were responsible for about 30% of U.P. deer predation. I may not remember that right, but it was a high number. 10:07 "...the DNR cannot manage the wolf population..." Simple answer to that is - don't. All state, county, and local officials just ignore wolf deaths. Stop enforcing federal regulations. Let PETA, Sierra Club, Audubon, and Humane Society try to enforce federal laws on wolves. 10:41 Anyone else remember DRIP, Deer Range Improvement Program? All the hours and dollars that sunk into that, where's the improvement? Didn't the improvements last? Did they ever work at all? Why will it be different this time? 17:09 Prediction, based on personal experience - The purpose of the Deer Management Initiative groups is to have the appearance of doing something, to placate hunters by giving them a forum. Why do they have "a couple of biologists... _and a law enforcement officer_ "? It's to remind hunters who has the power. Will the members of the public, especially those "representing a larger group", be chosen based on their political influence? Let's just say I am skeptical.

Problem number 1- Tribal hunting regulations. Problem number 2- Wolves. Problem number 3- Cutting of the deer yards. The wolves kill their share of deer, but I have a tribal neighbor who between him and his family, with their allowed tribal tags killed 18 deer last year. The tribal rifle season runs from September until January 7. They wait until the major migration is on and shoot the mature Does. Not only does this kill probably three deer at once but that matriarch elder who passes very important habits to the young is gone. Therefore, the deer that do survive do not know how to survive for next year. Michigan could take some notes from western states. Out west, human presence isn't even allowed in animal migration and wintering areas. In Michigan, that's where the tribal members go to hunt.

I found this show to be very objective and balanced. I would agree that private landowners that have deer yards on their property should have an incentive to maintain those yards. I disagreed with Gary Gorniak when he states that non-hunters should not be part of any study group put together by the DNR. I personally am a non-hunter, but I am not anti-hunting, a clear difference. I simply enjoy seeing wildlife, be that of the birds in my backyard, or the deer, wolves, and black bear at the Porkies. I do understand the frustration of the hunters and the DNR with the wolf situation, because any legal means to control that predator population is out of the hands of local control. But the wolf is not the only predator, and a wolf hunt is not in and of itself a silver bullet. Great show, and great interviews to go along with the show. Do watch the entire interviews on the podcast.

@@REIronminer I am a resident of the state of Michigan, means I have as much right to have my voice hear as any other resident, hunter or non-hunter. Also, while I do not hunt my sons do, and so I would like that resource to be managed for them. I was just having lunch a few hours ago with my friends that do hunt, and I mentioned to them that one of the comments that came from the show is that some of the piss poor management of wildlife in the UP comes from the belief that, "there will always be deer here", that is wishful, magical thinking, and not science. They were in perfect agreement with me because they know me and understand I do have "skin in the game", when it comes to the UP.

The real problem in Michigan is 58,984 deer-involved crashes in Michigan in 2022. Wolf kills don’t even come close to any of this in any particular manner. You’re barking up the wrong tree. Literally. Hunters you want more deer tell your friends and neighbors to quit driving. I’m sure you know somebody that’s hit one this year.
