In this video I share my experience using the Sony MDR-MV1 headphones. These are studio open back reference monitor headphones that are made for both 360 spatial audio and stereo mixing. I first tried these out at NAMM and using them now in my studio, they’ve become one of my favorite headphones. Period.

I actually put these on my Sweetwater wish-list and I think it was because of your demonstration of them back in NAMM 2023. What makes spatial mixing promising, particularly with Dolby Atmos (and maybe the other means as well), is that the fold-down into binaural makes for headphone listening even better. I personally love it when it feels like you are "bathed" in sound where it just consumes you as if you were underwater. This is something I want to do to more often in the near-future ... but one thing at a time =]

I’m keeping an eye on spatial mixes, but they still strike me personally as more gimmick than Wave of the Future, although opinions other than this I find have strong merit. My own take is informed largely by the economics of culture and where we are presently in that cycle (food and rent vs entertainment), but things could change significantly. And then an asteroid smacks us. That’s probably a different conversation. 😂 Always appreciate your videos and your input!

There is not such a thing ''only for atmos''. But this got a great high extended region and nice lows. Plus, the construction gives better separation and spaciousness, that leads to better atmos translation and 3d feeling

I have a wired pair of Sennheiser headphones (model unknown), a pair of Sony studio headphones (again model unknown), and some new-ish Sennheiser bluetooth headphones ... all over-ear, around $200 each. They all sound incredible with spatial audio. I remember getting an ASMR spatial audio CD in the early 2000's previewing THX (and later Dolby Surround stuff). They sounded as good as anything today. Spatial audio can be serviced by two speakers in the super near field of headphones because we have two ears. 5hz to 80khz is way better than the 20hz to 20khz of my headphones, but everything else is possibly voodoo. $0.02

I know they were not intented for it but since 2019 I use the Sony WH-XB900N for mixing and mastering with great results despite the fact they have lots of bass, probably way too much for most. I've had many bassy headphones before but none of them had that loudness while remaining clean. They go down to 2hz with a bump around 30hz. That means heavy bass music sound amazing on them but as soon as you listen to country, rock or jazz it won't sound muddy or bass boosted. After many hours referencing professional tracks in all genres, they quickly became my go to headphones. I use them to listen music, tracking vocals, mixing and mastering.

@@SanjayC As with any speakers. Before having JBL monitors I've started on hifi speakers. I do prefer monitors anyway but I did with what I had at that time. Just for experience I tried to master a song few weeks ago on a mono bluetooth JBL GO2+. The frequency range is only 130hz to 20khz so really not suited for controlling low frequencies and stereo but in the end the mids sounded on point. Now I use them to double check mono compatibility and how the mix will sound on small speakers.

I own the DT770 Pro's from Beyerdynamic. Though those are closed headphones, so not a total fair comparison, but how would you rate the Sony ones to the DT770's? Or also, are they better than the open back DT990's?

770 is a very uneven headphones with messed up lows and bumped highs. Also big lack of detalization, so you really cant hear any 0.5db equalisation. In any of ndh30/1990/mv1 you will real hear any little equing and compression changes
