Disaster STRIKES | Leg 4 28/04 | The Ocean Race Show
Спорт
It's been an incredibly difficult start to the Leg for the sailors, highlighted by the dismasting of Team Holcim-PRB's boat which has meant they now have to slowly return to shore. Meanwhile, Paul Meilhat has been struggling with severe illness aboard Biotherm's boat, and Team Malizia's Nicolas Lunven has been recovering from a head injury sustained earlier in the week.

Holcim's misfortune put quite a damper on the race. Everyone is really crushed. Truly hoping that a speedy solution can be found with a view to welcome ALL boats in Newport. So keeping the faith and a positive attitude, trusting that all will be well, is the motto right now. And sending positive vibes to all sailors and the Holcim support team.
While I'm a Team Malizia fan, no one wants to hear of such a tragedy as has befallen Team Holcim PRB. They have been fierce competitors and leaders throughout most of this race. I am deeply sorry to see that this has happened to them. I surely hope that they can rejoin the race at Newport -- but that is a logistical nightmare to accomplish. I wish them well.
After getting used to the IMOCAs it suddenly is even more astounding to see the harsh and brutal conditions the sailors are exposed to onboard the open cockpit designed VO65....
I hope Holcim PRB gets back to race in time. Seeing them dismasted is heart wrenching.
I believe Kevin Escoffier and his team (on and off the boat) will accomplish getting back in the race and to Newport for a point AND to start Leg 5! Having watched Escoffier and Jean Le Cam after the rescue, etc. ... and all of the videos in TOR ... Kevin Escoffier is an accomplished and yet humble and realistic leader. I expect that the entire team fits with his mission. Just like with Guyot, it is absolutely heartbreaking. I think all teams hope for a 5 IMOCA race ... I certainly do as a spectator! Thanks to Niall and TOR team for this show ... a lot explained. I did have to Google "Pan pan" :)
Excellent explanation of the J2 rigging and possible failure. I was also wondering about fuel on board. Well answered.⛵⛵⛵⛵⛵
Amazing fighting spirit for Holcim, to claim even 1 point to stay in the lead. I hope they have a speedy recovery and sail to Newport!
Now it's time to hope that the mast arrives soon to fix the boat and leave to Newport. 🙏✨️🌊⛵️
We had no idea that Paul has been sick? This race is certainly taking the health from these brave sailors. Hopefully he and Nico will recover soon and not effect the end result. Thank you so much for sharing this epic race.
You can hear the genuine sadness in all the crews and the goodwill towards Kevn and his crew. Lady luck can be a b@tch sometimes and it was PRB’s turn. I am just thankful they are skilled as sailors to deal with such dangerous situations and come up with a plan B. Stay safe and fairwinds. Greg 🇬🇧
Appreciate the explanation from Rosie
You couldn't get much more of a dramatic Race than this one. I wonder if at this stage, all the remaining teams will be ensuring the have a J-0 Stay (or equivalent), up at all times.
You could fly the mast to Rio in a 747 freighter really expensive but doable. I’ve worked with them for 43 years and loaded much more difficult stuff than a carbon fibre mast give Cargolux a call.

I wonder what kind of funds these teams have? Diverting a 747 like you say, is not cheap.
This brings back memories of when Puma lost the upper 2/3 of their mast in the middle of the South Atlantic, where there was no place nearby to go. Even motoring was a challenge, due to the extreme distance involved in reaching the nearest land. A passing freighter donated enough diesel to allow the boat to reach an island where they waited for a pick up by a freighter. The crew were able to use the stump of the mast to fly a small amount of sail, but only could manage 2-3 knots. This case the mast snapped right at the base, so there was no stump.
Thank you for a good report, first one with the real facts.
Good report. Answered a lot of questions.
With that determination Holcim will be on the start line in Newport.
Wallenius Wilhelmsen have a RORO ship from Rio on 8 May arriving in Baltimore on 5 May. Vessel can easily handle and IMOCA. Tight but doable it they can get the new mast to Newport

Let’s not give them TOO much help 😂
Good explanation of the most likely suspect for causing the dismasting. Since all the teams are using the same J2 mast fitting, can we assume the other teams will be heading up their masts to take another look as soon as possible?
One way to make that swivel break for sure is to overdo backstay tensioning. Most likely hydraulic, the force it can generate is endless. Going upwind, you need to find the balance between reducing forestay sag so you can point higher and accidentally breaking the forestay.

I did think that, assumed backstay cranked to point the boat, but only one forestay as a single point of failure. Remember Malizia checking theirs on quiet days in the SO.
Heartbreaking to see this happen to Holcim and impressive to see how their team handles this test. I know they will be back in the race as they are fierce competitors! Go Holcim! My question : what are the design features that determine this class of boats for this race? Rosie commented on how all boats have the same mast yet the hull designs are very different? Who decides what must be "standard design" for each competitor and what can be open for modification? I'm a marine biologist and not really a sailor but the technical aspects of these boats is fascinating. Thank you for clarifying these technical details as I enjoy this adventure from terra firma!
Are other boats having to keep J0 or J3 as additional forestays? I can imagine how nerve racking it may be not fully trusting your mast when the going gets tough again.
I remember Peter Black using the cooks cutting board to set up a new rig & averaged 13 knots into Cape Town under jury rig ?
Concerning masts of FRP: Kevlar is a very tough fiber, and it was "alloyed" with carbon fiber weave in the Ferrari F40. I marvel that this is not used to better effect on masts. Aluminum-mast dismasting is a rear thing. Rigidity ain't everything.
There all safe thank god. Live to fight another day🎉
Is it just me or do these Imoca boats break easier than the VO65’s? Are there any comparative metrics about the conditions at the time all the breakages so far this edition compared to the breakages from previous editions? So glad everyone is safe! Hate it for Kevin E and crew. Plenty of racing left to maintain/recover points!
What about converting the holicm boat into a kite boat? Has it been tried with an amoca?
Qualifying of drama the start of leg 4, would be an understatement. Injuries, mast... T__T Does Team Malizia made having a bruised up team mate mandatory?
What happened to the main part of the mast, since only a smaller portion of it appears to be fixed on the boat?
What happened to the mainsail, brought onboard or cut loose ?
Did the Mast break or what exactly happened? 😢
I hope they get the new rigg as soon as possible to Rio to be able to complete the leg in time, but I still wonder why they didn't go 40nm north to Vitória instead of 200nm down to Rio. Still waiting for an explanation. Independently I wish them good luck for a swift repair and a safe journey to Newport.

So an simple cable (J2) is killing an high tech boot 🤔
What about using a military aircraft or cargo civilian aircraft to transport the mast?

Yeah, Kim Jong Un will do it.
Could you provide the subtitles in English, please? I didn't understand many words because of the fast speeches and accents. KZread message: "no subtitles available for this video". Thanks!

It is not a race around the world if a boat can retire from a leg and still go on to win. The manager says they havent retired but in the real world, putting on the engine is a retiral.

Not if it is being used to push the boat in the wrong direction🙂
His final comments-'losing sailors is part of the adventure'????? Please, choose your words carefully

Please listen carefully, I'm pretty sure he said losing sails, not sailors;)
Why don’t all of the sailors wear life jackets while on deck?
Bad design. It failed so others will. Do the other boats continue racing or is there a recall to check the swivel connection? Who is responsible for knowing there is an issue? Now all the crews are sailing knowing it can happen any time to them.

Bescheuerter Kommentar. Nach zigtausend Meilen höchster Belastungen kann alles brechen. Recall. So ein BS. Gehen Sie schlafen.
😪🥶🤕😩
Thats why god invented 1x19 wire forestays

Not the forestay, it's the flex swivel at the top.

@@BRMCaptChaos Hence the comment. They lack a forestay, the whole rig depends on a swivel 🤯
should have gone outside. well offshore.
These interviews were so staged. All their cute comments yet everybody knows if Holcim would finish the race no one else had a chance . So all 4 boats are yippey ka yeah , let's race and kick the heck out of Holcim. I like it . cheeeerio

100 Punkte für den größten Schrottkommentar.
Please clean up your choice of language. It's a boat race. It's not INCREDIBLY difficult. DISASTER hasn't struck. Please, tone down the adjectives. "BRUTAL SCENES" belong to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Not in a boat race. Less drama, more sailing news. Please. Thank you.
