Disappointed in Wyze - Watch Before You Setup RTSP
We've got new info about Wyze projects like MaxDrive, and you aren't going to like them. Also, and most important, you may not want to install the RTSP feature on your cameras. Very Very sad day in my book. Not happy with how Wyze did this.

It does say there will not be updates if you read the download page! Now personally I feel like they went out of there way to make this feature available at all. Its not listed as a feature of the camera anywhere , so I am thankful that they even made it! This also shows they actively support their product , with many companies your lucky to even get bug fixes let alone updates!

I love your channel! But to be fair, I don't think Wyze hid this in the fine print. In fact, in your previous video about how to set up RSTP, you jumped right over the "Will RSTP continue to be developed?" section. It's the first section, right before the "How to set up RSTP" section. Now, I agree that they didn't put it in red, bold, ALL CAPS letters, but it was there in plain sight.

Wyze did make it clear that the RTSP firmware wouldn't have a lot of the features that the mainstream firmware has and that it probably wouldn't be updated in the future. Probably because I followed the RTSP process on their forum.

Um hello this is the first thing to read before downloading from the website: Will RTSP continue to be developed? We don't have the resources to keep developing two branches of firmware for Wyze Cam v2 and Wyze Cam Pan. This means that the RTSP branch will be upgraded infrequently. Using the RTSP firmware will prevent the camera from supporting any future functionality additions, such as A.I. for Human/Animal/Vehicle recognition, event video tagging, further stability improvements, and bug fixes. The currently available firmware is an updated beta version. This contains improvements over the prior version, but still has potential to include minor stability issues. Once we're in a position where we can confidently say that any present issues have been fixed, we'll push out a release version of the firmware.

I have an ASUS RT-AC68P connected using Ethernet and the Wyze cam is about 8 feet from the router... any suggestions is to why this is happening.. Whew! I was afraid you were going to tell me that the camera bursts into flames after installing RTSP. Or that RTSP doesn't actually work, or something. Since RTSP is a specialized task-specific feature, useful mainly to DIYers, tinkerers, or other targeted purposes, I don't care that it is off the mainstream of firmware updates. If I want to repurpose the camera back to being a normal Wyze cam I can easily do that, so it's not an issue for me.

I am most disappointed by the evaporation of Max Drive, which I was looking forward to buying (about now!). More serious is the adverse impact the cancellation has on Wyze’s credibility. The Max Drive was announced with great fanfare in January/February with a promised availability date of Q1-2. The sudden cancellation will cast a pall over future announcements, regardless of whether or not Wyze could have done anything to prevent it.

@@GrossTechnology Many successful businesses owe their success to partnerships. Wyze dropped Max Drive because it doesn't fit the revenue model that their investors are demanding: i.e., optional increased cloud storage for RMR (recurring monthly revenue). Anyone who doesn't think RMR isn't Wyze's business plan is just plain ignorant of the nature of the security industry.

Great video Josh, I'm with you, 100% on team Wyze, the RTSP issue is honestly kind of annoying. I 100% understand them not having the resources to develop both firmware's but it sounds like there was no communication on your limitation of the firmware updates going forward. Appreciate your honesty.

@@GrossTechnology Meh. I thought Wyze had been quite clear and up front that the rtsp support was a sideline to the mainline release, and I made the trade off to to stay with the mainline releases. My main purpose for installing rtsp was to transmit the video farther away than my local network, and their implementation wasn't going to support that anyway. You *always* have to read the release notes!
