Dirty Dancing Filming Location ! Mountain Lake Hotel (READ DESCRIPTION)

This movie was filmed in 2 locations, Virginia and Lake Lure, NC. This video is ONLY the Virginia location.
PLEASE WATCH the Netflix documentary where the producer visits THIS very hotel in Pembroke, Virginia and describes the lift scene being done as shes standing directly where I stand in this video! It's sad that Lake Lure tells everyone it was shot there when it was in fact shot at this Virginia hotel. Sadly almost everything from Lake Lure is gone.
THE WATER LIFT SCENE LOCATION AND OPINIONS - There are lots of opinions about this scene and where exactly it was filmed. Lake Lure in North Carolina ( a truly amazingly beautiful place) has claimed for years that it was filmed in Firefly Cove. There used to be an old boy scout camp in the woods and the cabins were used in the movie as the staff’s bunks. The stairs and bridge that Baby dances on were also located there. HOWEVER there are still staff at Mountain Lake Hotel in Virginia who say it was absolutely filmed there, so who knows. At this point it will probably be varying opinions forever due to the fact that both areas enjoy the revenue from Dirty Dancing visitors so both will keep claiming it was at their location. The long and short of it is, IT'S A GREAT MOVIE, WHO CARES BEYOND THAT! haha Shortly after filming this I visited Lake Lure in North Carolina to see for myself what was left. The short answer is, not much. The boy scout camp was torn down years ago and is now a community of beautiful homes. I believe one of the homes was built on the original foundation of Johnny's cabin which is pretty cool. The long staircase exists as well and I was able to snap a photo of them. Unfortunately this is about all that's left. However if you get the chance you should definitely check both locations out. Lake Lure is such a cool area with tons of outdoorsy things to do. Also, make sure you check out Mountain Lake Hotel in Virginia. Come for the amazing Dirty Dancing filming locations and stay for the incredible Hotel experience!
I had planned on visiting Mountain Lake Hotel for many years however it is so far off "the beaten path" that one must truly work a day into a trip to see this beautiful place. Trust me though, it is worth seeing if not for the hotel itself. Beautiful stone and wood work everywhere, beautiful views and of course the view of Baby's cabin! The hotel definitely embraces the movie and loves for visitors to stop in and look around. Keep an eye out for the little shed-like building in the parking lot that houses lots of movie memorabilia and information about what can be seen and where.

dsprenger13 I here you!!! We got the tape the moment it hit the shelves and loved watching this movie. My son was about 3 when it did hit video and boy did he love the movie also! He used to ask for it and would get in front of the TV and do the dance moves with the various scenes!!! He was so cute, his favorite dance move was the end where they basically line danced down the isle and started getting people up to dance...he had the steps down, the hip thrusts and all! LOL!!! So sorry to hear your Mom is gone, My Dad passed in 1987!!! I don't know how old you are, how long it has been, how raw things might still be, but I just want to offer you a bit of encouragement, as I feel what I say may help heal and/or inspire someone/anyone to know it's okay to let others in, and they find their own place and will never take anyone else's place, period. It's impossible!!! But life goes on with a shadow of sorrow and sometimes pain across our heart, but love is infinite so it will always be there with you and you can keep filling your heart up by bringing more loved ones into your life!!! Don't be afraid to watch the movie with someone else, especially if they love it as much as you do. You can share your likes and if any dislikes, but most of all you can swoon and swell your heart up with joy and love every time you watch it and the new person or persons can squish their love in next to Mom's, and swoon plus fill up with that joy and love as well...… and while watching, Mom will always be right there surrounding y'all with love as well!!! It's the love, closeness and companionship that movies like this can inspire and it is okay and good to also share that with others, beyond the person/people you already share or shared with!!

About 25 miles from here. This lake is famous for draining itself, and refilling due to the geology of the mountain itself. The lake is currently full again and they had the world's largest water slide there just last summer. Just down the road we have another lake with the dam created by beavers. Every now and then there will be a flood and the dam will break. The beavers rush to rebuild the dam and it fills back up as well.

The masks I remember from Point Break were; Reagan, Carter, Nixon & Johnson, If I have Johnson Correct...I know the other 3 are!! lol!!! Every thing I ever saw and/or heard about Patrick was that he was a good man, with problems exactly like the rest of us, for the most part....meaning his life was as perfect or dismal as he chose to make it, money or no money, and with the money he did have things were not dreams and fairytale perfect like some people think money makes life!!! I have love and empathy in my heart for who he was and for the cancer he went through. I BEG ALL MEN, to if nothing else from age 40 on(which is younger then they recommend, but start early) to get their prostrate checked regularly, especially if having any issues urinating and/or with ED and or issues with the strength and/or amount of ejaculation. These can be some of the signs of issues with one's prostrate and can help detect cancer early enough to eradicate it and allow you to survive a long life with your loved ones!!!

John Wayne that wasn't the same room. The dining hall you saw here was where the breakfast scenes and Max talking to his staff were shot. The dancing scenes and famous grand finale were shot in the "grand ballroom" which was at lake lure. It was the camp's dining hall heavily cleaned up and decorated to look like a grand ballroom. That location no longer exists and would have been unrecognizable outside of the time of filming, in any event.

My family has a farm just outside Lynchburg, VA city limits. We have a 10 acre spring fed pond that my grandfather built by damning up a natural spring. About 19 years ago, it dried up. Almost completely. There was only a large puddle left about maybe 20 ft across. My dad and I walked out to it and threw grass hoppers into it and the fish snapped them up super quick. Anyway, it was like that for about two years. Then the area started getting more snow in the winter, and it filled back up again. It’s been plum full since. We were all a little sad when it was low. It was low for about two or three years. Super weird phenomenon.

This place is very unique. It was a sacred site for the native Americans and it’s one of only two naturally formed lakes above 4,000 ft above sea level in the world. It was formed due to a limestone cave collapsing under the lake which dammed up the flowing springs. The lake has drained many times at sediment becomes loose and it drains then sediment fills the holes again and it will slowly fill again. Also several years ago they dove to the leaks and used a sediment cement to try to refill the lake in order to bring the people back but it didn’t work out.

I hope Hollywood doesn't try to remake this too. IF IT AIN'T BROKE THEN DON'T FIX IT! There should be some kind of rule/law that movies cannot be remade unless they're at LEAST 50 years old and they can't be classics, eg: The Godfather, Dirty Dancing, etc.

The lift scene was filmed in Lake Lure, NC. Most of the cabins for the help were at Lake Lure also.

Yup...the initial cabin where Baby carries the watermelon to....is at Lake Lure, NC...it's NOT in Hendersonville as mentioned. It's a real town by itself...next to Chimney Rock, NC...both towns are about 4 blocks long🤣😂...the cabin WAS there, I should say....burned down😥

Lake Lure did not preserve the movie locations. It's private gated property and the buildings are gone.

Wanted to say thanks for making this video... Ive watched it several times over the past few years. I really liked the little flash backs from the movie and then how it looks now, and the tiny bits of information. You have inspired me to take a trip here... and maybe some other locations. So Im planing a trip in late Sept or the beginning of Oct.

My wife and I really enjoyed this thank you. I have terabytes of vintage film, photographs and negatives. I have digitized over the years. I wish I had the time to do something like this with it. Nice job thank you.

I can tell you feel nostalgic as you walk through those places and remember the scenes of the movie. Like the closest thing you can get to time travel Even the backgroung music at the end has that 80s feeling... is that synthwave ? 6:20
