I was old (over 60), jaded and done with pop music (used to work in the music biz) when I stumbled across Mamamoo in 2016 but was soon convinced they were the best girl group I'd ever heard in any language, music genre or era. Here are some of the ways they stand out in my eyes and ears: Pretty much universally considered to be the top female vocal group in kpop. Even better live because of their amazing, always live vocals, charismatic stage presence, and bff team chemistry. All-star quartet. Every member has a successful solo career on the side and they've had several #1 hits as soloists. MMM was the first group to have all members chart on Billboard as solo artists while the group was still active as a unit. Creatively involved in all aspects of their career from lyric writing, composing, vocal arrangements and choreography to styling and MV concepts and tho they don't do it on recordings each member plays at least one instrument. Rapper/singer Moonbyul (far left) has the most songwriting credits of any female idol (100+) because she writes almost all of her own rap verses and the other members have about 75 credits between them. Folks say Mamamoo can write a song about anything and considering they've written songs about everything from recipes, shoes, panties and dad jokes to a comedic hip hop song where they diss each other about their height (they're all short), that's probably true. Extremely diverse discography ranging from jazz, swing, r&b, hip hop and latin pop to reggaeton, bossa nova, ballads, EDM, country and just about every other pop genre you can think of. Folks say Mamamoo can sing anything. Koreans boiled it down to the catch phrase BeLisMaMoo - Believe and listen to Mamamoo. Divas who don't act like divas. They're serious artists who don't take themselves too seriously. In kpop circles their duality as world class singers vs crackhead beagle-dols is legendary. With Mamamoo, they only need four mics turned on to create magic. That's true singing prowess there.

The closing duet by Wheein ("Hee in") and Hwasa ("Wah Sah") is particularly significant. They grew up together, went to school together, dreamed of making music, went to Seoul together to pursue that dream, and landed in Mamamoo together. And give or take Wheein changing her managership as this song was originally produced, they're still together.

I love Moonbyul’s voice. It’s unique, deeper. One of the best rapper of kpop imo. She’s also an all rounder. She sings more in her solo projects and involved directly with her solo albums from writing the lyrics, composing.

I remember watching hearing this masterpiece, and I just sobbed in my room. Whenever I would need to cope or get away from my feelings, I would listen to Mamamoo’s songs. They are celebrating their 9th anniversary today. 🥹 🎉 From the beginning they started with something that was different from typical KPOP idole groups, musically with their jazz, r&b style and their personalities. I'm impressed by their fighting spirit and the fact that they didn't give up, even in the face of opposition and setbacks. Not even their own company fully believed that they would make it. They worked hard and relied on what they do best, singing and performing. Authentically, with passion, self-irony and fun. It wasn't always easy, like many of these idols they went beyond their strength and health, but always remained professional. I find their discography and career to be an exciting korean music story in its own. One that continues to evolve as they mature, developing and experimenting, solo, away from the group concept, as well as their many activities such as musicals, shows, concerts. Hwasa said 9 years is still nothing, just a beginning. They really take their profession seriously. Now we expect solo albums from Hwasa and Wheein, Solar and Moonbyul take part mainly with their Mamamoo+ project at festivals, but this will be only the tip of the iceberg. In the two weeks after the end of their U.S. tour, they prepared and rehearsed a completely new concert with 36 songs that they performed today at Encore in Seoul. That's how crazy they are in a positive sense. But what I would like to see again soon is a real album, with a cool concept and an exciting idea. 4SEASON4Colours series was a high standard, also what rbw musically have put on the legs, I hope they can pick up on that again. With these girls rbw can still do so much. I hope they sees it the same way. Mamamoo want and will continue. The best thing they could tell us today. We can look forward to hearing about their unexpected ideas. :)

MAMAMOO are the only kpop group I stan beyond BTS. These girls are incredible and deserve to be discovered by more people. Moonbyul (the rapper) was also the one who got my attention at first but the more I saw from them the more I fell for all 4. They remind me of BTS in a lot of ways... Love Mamamoo (Hwasa is my bias 😊). Moonbyul is one of the best rappers (male or female); her cadence is always on point, no matter what genre the rap is written for, she fits in seamlessly. This was a song released for their 7 year anniversary (when K-pop contracts are usually up and for renewal), and reflects on the group’s journey over the years. They have a really diverse discography. I recommend their Killing Voice if you do the mind spoilers (it’ll be a medley/a sampling of their songs).

I really love how Wheein and Hwasa sings the last line. ‘Cuz they did dreamt of being singers together back at middle school, and after countless struggles, they are now here, together in Mamamoo, with MoonSun. It’s the reason why I love Destiny and this song, ‘cuz I really think it’s fate that the four of them met. The chemistry they have with each other, not just the couplings MoonSun, Young Girls, DdukDdak/Angel Line, Rapper Line, etc. but as a group of 4 overall. They’re unique and different from each other, not just the voice, vibe, preference and personalities, but at the same time, they compliment each others’ uniqueness in a way that I don’t think I’ll find in other groups. This is also the reason why even though I stopped joining fandoms and just enjoyed watching public covers of different groups, I can’t leave Moomoo. Even if I have no time and energy to support them, I’ll forever be a Moomoo that will wish for their happiness and success.

As for Wawn the song you're listening to here, it came as a surprise to many that they came out in the summer with a profoundly reflective ballade. The song is also seen as their own reflection of where they are now and that it wasn't always easy. There is a matching documentary that may soon be available on Netflix in Asia, but can also be found here with a little search on yt. :) They went their own way two years ago and some thought they might break up, but it wasn't meant that way. More like a cut, the end of a youth and the beginning of something new, a new chapter... Not everyone could see or understand that at the time. The new section brought great solo albums, the opening of youtube channels, many projects and the long-awaited tour beyond Korea, which they completed today on thrir 9th anniversary. Incidentally, I also find this middle part in Wawn, where Moonbyul sings, the most exciting. I wish they had turned the song inside out, because those transitions and more voices in that part with drum rhythm would have made a really good song. Different yes, but that was the first thing I thought when I heard the song.

Moonbyul is an intelligent rapper/vocalist. She's not all about the speed and same style of rapping but she make it sure to fit in whatever genre their song is. And all her parts really stand out in every song that gives additional flavor in the group.

If you like powerful and stable vocals you can't do much better than Mamamoo in Kpop. Nmixx is up there too (with Red Velvet of course), Lily and Haewon are incredible in their own way and the whole group performs on a level we haven't seen in Kpop, dare I say ever?

But I saw this before O_o Anyway, for those wondering, their anniv is just 1 year, 1 week after Bangtan (more or less): June 18th 2014 So they've been at it 9 years and are now currently touring the US as the most profitable debut tour for a girl group over there (or something like that). They are a treat for the eyes, the soul and the ears first and foremost. Amazing humans. They have my respect as Bangtannies do. Amazing 4 individuals, all with solo projects and hands on writing at least: Moonbyul (92, friends with Jin), Solar (91, leader), Wheein (95, it's pronounce Hweein) and Hwasa (95, highschool mate with Wheein, maknae). I haven't consumed much of their content aside music, but they are hilarious and cute. Moonbyul and Wheein were MCs of... inkigayo(?) with Hobi and Tae and they were all 4 a treat! (then came the rumours xD)
