Video begins with a conversation between two figures, the observer and fictional character from Sherlock Holmes' older brother, Mycroft Holmes. The observer asked Mycroft for his opinion about the controversial figure of John Wayne Gacy (a psychopath, serial killer, and sex criminal in the US, nicknamed "Killer Clown"). He was executed by injection. Of course, this conversation is impossible, especially apart from fictional and non-fiction characters. Mycroft lived in an earlier era (1893-1908) than Gacy (1942-1994). The observer (i think this is Kyo perspective) asked Mycroft to pretend he was Gacy so that the conversation would be more intense. Mycroft is known to be smarter and has more rational-deductive abilities than his younger brother, Detective Sherlock. Mycroft agree, by the symbol at minute 01:33 (the clown) and the number 8213, referring to the title of Gacy's home horror film (released in 2010). The observer asks by showing his thoughts. The figure of a small child is depicted with many symbols of trauma, social isolation, and fear. In my opinion, the pink color (Baker Miller) shows the symbol that makes the child grow up and remain comfortable with this 'abnormal' situation. (clip at 02:37). What's interesting is that the big devil's head that appeared in his room had been changing into the form of an adult man (perhaps his father, who was the first to traumatize him). This means he sees humans in general as demons even sometime he missed to have normal life (look at image of child walks with his father). we know that Kyo is great at writing with multi-layered metaphorical qualities. In fact, he often insert many separate symbols that must be read macro-wise and sew the context threads together so that they are connected to each other. Even though in simple terms this song might explain that a child's upbringing in childhood determines how he grows as a human being, in my opinion, this song cannot be separated from the big theme of Dir en Grey's criticism of humanism as they have been doing so far: how humans can carry out a series of crimes, manipulation, and damage on earth. Humanism was killed by humans themselves. Dir en Grey for me rejects the definition that humans should be good creatures, but the complexity, the chaos of human identity to sometimes be good and sometimes be evil, that is the definition of what humans should be. This life is a burden because it is not easy to be a good human being (we are surrounded by an environment and society that is full of rot). Sometime, monsters don't come from somewhere; they are born by humans or cycle of Karma. they're born by agony, injustice, trauma, pain, ego, anger, attachment, etc. Anytime we can be a monster, or create someone into monster. The Devil in Me

I interpreted the music video differently. I saw it as an observer talking to an AI. First they have the AI acting as Mycroft to talk about Gacy, and learning of them through the lens of the fictional genius. Then, they have the AI act as Gacy himself. to speak directly to him. When he asks to see inside the "AI Gacy's" mind, it generates AI images for the Observer, and that's what we're seeing in the video. At times, the AI-Gacy also speaks to the observer as a deep faked Gacy mugshot.

Can I just say the use of Baker Miller pink is fucking genius and if anybody knows the history behind that color, you know why it’s so genius the color itself has such a dark history If you are a crime enthusiast, please look up Baker Miller, pink, and the studies done on it and I think that really adds a great element to this video

I spoke too soon about the use of AI in this video. I didn't realize it would be integral to the story like this. What a cool idea - someone using a bot to try to truly visit a killer's heart and mind. I like that it even showed one scene being rendered. Incredibly effective. It reminds me of concept behind The Cell with a relevant modern take.

To be quite honest, I think Marrow was the least interesting album. It had some real shiners on it though. The Pledge & Namamekashiki Ansouku were fantastic songs. The single versions of Clever Sleazoid & Ryoujoku no Ame were better than the Marrow versions. And Agitated Screams Of Maggots was ok I guess. But Uroboros, Dum Spiro Spero and Arche were when they started to get better. I like the balance of "pretty music with gruesome grotesque music." Or stuff that is really emotional like Footsteps In The Lonely Valley. Very pretty but sad.

@@holomorph5448 -- I got into them in 2003, kinda by accident, because of a website called "Project-J" which was where I first heard the song "Cage" -- then later I found "Centigrade-J" a completely different website, which hosted english translations of Diru songs done by Brian "Boo" Stewart who would later go on to create the Purple Sky magazines. (One of the first english print magazines about J-Rock). I remember downloading a ton of Diru songs because I was really fascinated with their music style, it was like... partly Visual Kei, partly chunky Nu Metal. I definitely do remember when Withering to Death first became available in the USA through Hot Topic, via the western label Warcon Records. While I do love Withering to Death, later albums such as Uroboros and Dum Spiro Spero and Arche completely outclass it. Marrow was... decent in some parts, I really preferred the sadder prettier kind of songs over the muddy "Sludge Metal" type stuff. Their older material from Vulgar and Kisou was a lot more straightforward Rock / Metal stuff. There wasn't quite as much of a "Progressive Rock" influence back then, but it was still great stuff. Nowadays I would say Dir en grey is right up there with Deftones and Dredg. Very experimental kind of music. Very "risk taking." Very "who cares whether or not people will like it, let's just do it our way and see what happens."

@@holomorph5448 -- Marrow just felt too "sludge metal" except for the really pretty sad songs like The Pledge and Namamekashiki Ansouku... their early stuff going back to Kisou and Vulgar was like a crossbreed between Industrial and Nu Metal, so that was really appealing to me. Withering to Death was their big break in the USA because they were able to sign with Warcon and have WtD re-released in American stores like Hot Topic and Fye. And of course, Diru being a guest band on the Family Values Tour certainly helped them get a foot in the door. Go back and listen to the earlier albums like Kisou and Vulgar, they had a very edgy, very rocky sound back then too, but on Uroboros and DSS and Arche, they really leaned in on the Progressive Rock stuff, with very long songs that have multiple tempo changes. And oh my gawd, the Unraveling EP was amazing. The remakes of The Final and Kasumi and Macabre were simply wonderful.

I’m no Holmesian scholar so I had to refresh my memory on the character of Mycroft Holmes and his character is essential to understanding the concept of the MV. For anyone unfamiliar, the character Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock Holmes’ older brother, has greater powers of deduction and is more intelligent than Sherlock. However he’s unambitious, lazy, and so cynical he founded a social club for cynics named for the Greek philosopher who founded cynicism as a school of thought. As described in one SH story, “He will not even go out of his way to verify his own solutions, and would rather be considered wrong than take the trouble to prove himself right. Again and again I have taken a problem to him, and have received an explanation which has afterwards proved to be the correct one. And yet he was absolutely incapable of working out the practical points”. The character is also a pivotal figure in the British government in an omniscient capacity. Given that context it seems like the MV is about the human mind in relation to the internet and technology, the character of Mycroft Holmes embodying the nature of it. The mind of Mycroft Holmes works much like AI, both advanced and lazy simultaneously, so chaT GPT aptly named. I think the connection between an omniscient government figure essential to all operations, the internet, and violence, depravity, pedophilia, etc is particularly interesting. How AI influences policy, what policymakers are entrenched in, internet conspiracy theories. Also, I love this song so much and have been listening to it nonstop.

@@bboyekosit seems like so many people are triggered by AI and JWG but I think that’s the point. We can’t talk about the internet without talking about divisiveness and people having strong opinions that can often cloud judgement.

@Iloveliquidgoo I completely agree. There's people I work with that get defensive when I say anything about A.I. I think it's wonderful DEG finds ways to discuss/cover topics that are big within the world while creating amazing pieces of art that incorporate somewhat hidden, complex, but interesting ways of looking at it

Interesting version. I think this can lead to the idea of how AI, which for us now is more of a tool for obtaining information (Mycroft) and entertainment (the clown), could easily turn out to be a maniac.

Went further down the rabbit hole- “The devil in me” may be referencing the 2019 book by physicist Paul Davies The Demon In The Machine. From a review in The Guardian, “One fashionable approach now in biology is to suppose that these laws have something to do with “information”. In the age of mechanical inventions, it was thought that animals were like marvellous clockwork machines, and the entire universe was a sort of fabulous Meccano construction designed by God. Now we are in the information age, it seems obvious to us that the human brain - even, in some theorists’ view, the cosmos as a whole - must be a computer, and that information itself somehow underlies reality. The conceptual problem here is that the idea of “information” makes sense only in the context of an observer for whom something out there, in the indiscriminate jumble of the world, counts as information. Before life exists, there cannot be any such thing as information.” Which would explain what the Observer means.
