Wow, Paulownia really is like cardboard. It makes the trash construction pine from the home centre look exquisite.

At first glance, my bet would be on the difference between sapwood and heartwood and not on an oiled edge. I've seen asian woodworkers use oilpots in this manner, and I think it might work, but I would prefer not to put oil on a surface that glue should bind to afterwards.

Well I think the WHOLE woodworking internet community, professional and hobbyist alike just learned something new there. I have never seen this demonstrated before anywhere but I have seen pretty much every You Tube woodworker there is dry humping their end grain! I do wonder whether the oil staining will affect finishes, but I’m pretty sure that any stains created by a light oil would be largely masked by many of today’s modern oil/ wax finishes. I’m off to my workshop to ‘Tormex my Narexes’ and give this a try. Much qudos to Hammer Sound …. One of my favorite channels out there. Wonder how it’ll be before everyone else on YT feels it necessary to impart ‘their’ wisdom on this subject?

This is a very old technique (I mean the use of oil). Thanks for the reminder! The best results are obtained when using transformer oil. It has a very low viscosity. You can also use diesel fuel, but diesel fuel has an unpleasant smell. Sharpening chisels manually with such high quality is golden hands! My respects!

I have an old rag rolled up in a tin can that is soaked with 3 in 1 oil I use to lubricate the bottoms of my planes. I also use it to lubricate my chisels and saw plates when working.

This is a great test and I problem I regularly encounter, I’ll have to try it out. The only trouble with this could be oil penetrating the wood and inhibiting a good glue bond.

That's a very good point. We're going to have to make sure we only do this on joints that do not receive glue, which can include a lot of joints.

Would be nice if you could redo the test with all 3 methods on a similar piece of wood: On the left side the wood seems compromised from a fungal infection, the middle is core-wood, and the right is normal sap-wood.

The grain is running very differently in each section of the board which can affect how the cut behaves. Maybe cut it off and do a reverse order? Smaller bites would also be more appropriate. As mentioned in another comment, it's not good practice to use linseed oil or worse BLO on rags due to the possibility of spontaneous combustion.

I bought some HSS chisels from Japan. Not signed, but overall well ground. Ive been getting great results with a coarse/fine diamond stone and finishing with a fine Arkansas oil stone. I can quickly work up a burr on both the coarse and fine diamond stone then finish the edge on the Arkansas stone.

There's sharpening and there's polishing to a mirror finish. Have you tried candle wax to lube your tools?

Water is not a lubricant because of its’ surface tension property. Oils and grease are but are also slow drying anti adhesives.

Yeah, but still pretty ugly and worse yet, it gets oil on the surfaces that might later have to be glued. I don't see why use extreme force with a chisel, especially a nice one like yours, when you can use a saw and clean up with the chisel, to make nice, clean cuts. And again, how are you gonna glue something with oil on it? What's the purpose of the oil, other than perform better in a made-up scenario?

Тест без воды, с водой и с маслом несколько не корректен. при тестировании без воды надо было делать аналогичные перерывы в долблении как в тестах с водой и маслом

Dude, how do you avoid massive tear out, moving the knife line back, and blowing out the other side? I don’t think you can avoid it with your sledgehammer approach. Plus, one strike like that will undo much of your careful sharpening.

Dudes...This is a demonstration of a worst case chiseling to see the difference oil on the blade makes. Yes the grain is very loose on the winner's side of the board. Has anyone else posted their own botched experiment results?

@@David-bc4rh Okay. The looseness of the grain is beside the point, and no, I for one do not post botched experiments. It just seems pointless, for example to hone and show off a sharp edge, only to destroy it in one sledge hammer blow to the chisel. It is actually quite humorous, and for that I am grateful, thank you. As to the matter of oil, I find it indispensable for any cutting - sawing, chiseling - and no it won’t get on your joints to interfere with glue up. On that, we can agree.

방수가 올라갈수록 연마 시간은 길어집니다. 1000방을 연마할때와 6000을 연마할때 시간이 다르 겠지요. 6000방 이상의 연마를 했을때 특별히 더 날카롭고 오래 유지된다는 느낌은 없었습니다. 그래서 시간 낭비란 생각입니다. 6000방 까지 하셔도 나무 깎기에는 충분합니다.개인적으로는 6000이상의 연마는 잘 하지 않습니다.^^

Nothing happens, that rough, uneven and ripped apart endg grain is not a reliable glue surface anyway. That's why no one cares about gluing endgrain, not because it's "weak" but because there's no joint where you can reliably get it flat.

@@DrewDiaz I do not think a bevel edge chisel will leave a significant amount of oil residue on the already cut long grain. You do not chisel the long grain for dovetails. It is always done off the saw.

Hmmmm…. I wonder how silicon lube would work? I’m not a fan of spray silicon and prefer food grade silicon grease. Fewer additives and can be used anywhere.

@Hellequin Maskharat As sharp as the chisel was, I was expecting a cleaner cut with no lube, but I obviously thought wrong. I would still go for the cleanest lube I could find. Sewing machine oil or maybe even glycerine.

Дерево павловния - странное дерево. Хлопок слабый и легкий. Работать с пилой легко Работать стамеской сложно. Стамеска быстро затупляется.

The point was to demonstrate how much easier a chisel cuts when lubricated with oil by cutting straight across the grain in each test. These results would indicate that the chisel slices across the fibers easier, instead of ripping them out, when dipped in oil

@@dillan6134 Yeah, I understand the point. But it's moot because chisels don't work well like it's demonstrated. Even the lubricated one has tear out. If you're implying smaller bites with the chisel will benefit from lubrication, maybe, maybe not. Ive never had a problem using a sharp unlubricated chisel. So again I say, the point is moot.

There’s no microbevel, it’s Japanese chisel which has laminated steel, a hard cutting edge and a soft upper steel.
