I have the 1st recording of Lady Soul singing " Never Grow Old" the year before the great Ms. Warwick saw her- at Rev. C.L. Franklin's New Bethel Baptist Church in 1956 . 14 years young sounding like she's well in her 40s. Unbelievable phrasing & feeling and with that golden age of some of this country's greatest voices alive - Mahalia, Bro. Joe May, Marion Williams, Sam Cooke, Rosetta Tharpe, Archie Brownlee, Clara Ward, etc....she was already in her teens a serious peer of those all time great voices. The highest complement that Duke Ellington would state of a great artist is their being " Beyond Category". That certainly applies to the 3 lovely ladies mentioned in this video clip as Ms. Warwick, Nancy(The Baby), & Sister Ree all changed up the vocal game forever & continue to enrich serious music listeners around the world.

I didn't see or hear that Cissy Houston or Dionne Warwick attended Aretha's funeral. I thought that they would had been there, but when they weren't, I thought they might have had other obligations. End of story, or so I thought. Later, I saw a list of celebrities that had sent notes of sympathy to Franklin's family and Cissy and Dionne were not listed. The thought that came to mind, was that they both probably held grudges against Aretha, due to Aretha saying that she ought to sue Dionne for libel over disagreements stemming from Aretha not appearing at Whitney's funeral. In my opinion, if they indeed held grudges against Aretha at the end of Aretha's life, in regard to what I've stated, Cissy and Dionne were wrong. Especially, if you know that Aretha is "a piece of work" under normal circumstances. Therefore, she probably would be worse if she is dying of Cancer. Many terminal patients go through much anger, back-biting, resentment, denial and moodiness. That's exactly why Patti LaBelle forgave Aretha, when Aretha "brushed" Patti off at the White House! God bless Patti for her absolute kind, compassionate and loving ways! Being life-long friends and Christians, Cissy and Dionne should have shown better and held no grudges, if indeed they held any at all!!!???

Nice to hear her remarks about Aretha. It looks like their relationship had some ups and downs. I hope they were alright at the time of Aretha's death. There is a wonderful clip of them singing I Say a Little Prayer duet on the Solid Gold show. Dionne's voice was perfectly suited for Bacharach/David songs. Of course, she several more hits in the 70s and 80s. I would like to see her get more flowers in terms of awards while she is still with us (Kennedy Center Honors, etc)

If Aretha was "a piece of work," under normal circumstances, I'm sure that having a terminal disease, like many facing the same crisis, more often than not, would tend to make one even more moody, angry, and engage in petty backbiting! Under these circumstances, I think Aretha should had been forgiven for her fax and sassy or feisty ways. by those who didn't appreciate or held a grudge towards Aretha, due to her behavior when she was in grave condition!!!

Dionne would have been 15 years old (born December of 1940) and Aretha would have been 14 years old (born in March 1942). It's really not that big of a stretch...

Now Dionne's honesty about Aretha may come into question in this clip. And I love me some Dionne. Aretha castigated Dionne, especially over Whitney and accused her of libel. Aretha has even stated that Dionne never liked her and they were never friends in a Rolling Stone interview. So Dionne you have Aretha as a friend in your eyes. But Aretha in that Rolling Stone interview doesn't, convey that? Now we can say as some have here that Dionne has more class. And to her credit, taken as they say the higher ground about everything. And overlooked Aretha because she was dying and as stated in this clip, that "Aretha was a piece of work". Ok fine no doubt she was. Plus another thing Dionne states that she and Aretha were both 15 when they meet? Really? According to published creditable records, Aretha was born in 1942 and Dionne 1940? So how could both being 15 match up? Alright Ms. Warwick loves ya. But let's keep it all real. .
