This soul-diva was/is underrated? Perhaps in comparison to the Beatles, Queen or Whitney Houston. But when you compare every artist like that, than the most ones are underrated, right? So I think she's well known up to today (perhaps not to the younger generation, but they unfortunatly don't know many great musicians from the 50s to the 80s.)

The entire time of descent and landing I listen to a constant loop of Duran Duran's View To a Kill. Or, wHenever I am flying OUT of Miami, the song is Gloria Estefan's cover of Turn The Beat Around.

Yeah your right, they played more rare songs back then because they did not have to go by policies that radio stations nowadays have to go by. It's a good thing that was, because I would have never heard of the 80s band "Mission" and their song "ready to give my heart"; Soul music in Philadelphia was vast and so many different songs played instead of the same ones over and over again.
