Yeah, no actual ps1 game has textures that look this sharp. Imagine characters in MGS1 or Syphon filter or Resi 2. Actually this looks like there is a bit of antialiasing as well. This is of course a single model, not a game so that must be why the console could easily handle it.

@@kulsevdasi I believe that this demo was mostly meant to show developers the amount of polygons that the PS1 could have on screen, and devs at the time likely understood that this level of fidelity was only possible because the demo was only rendering a single model and absolutely nothing else

@@apictureoffunction yeah thats the only way it would make sense. I mean you look at something that is crazy ambitious for ps1 tech, like MGS 1, and something like a whole game area has about the same amount of polygons as this animal.

@@kulsevdasi yeah this was definitely a "pushing the tech to it's limits" type demo for sure. It did actually inspire a lot of devs to work on the PS1 as well, Mark Cerny actually said this demo was one of the main reasons why Crash Bandicoot was developed for the PS1

Thats because they push all the psx power to just one model. If they were backgrounds, lighting, vegetation and a character then this t-rex would look like the one on tomb raider 1.

Imagine all you’d ever seen in video games were 2d sprites. This must’ve been freaking crazy impressive.

A lot of this is just good art, though. Ps1 can do a few K polys, and a trex made of 2-5k would look better than this, as that's literal sixth gen console quality. Its likely a few hundred polys.

no cap tho seeing this in astros playroom made me go “so this is how PlayStation came to be” then the phase 2 *wait for it* RT reX 😂 I was like “OH MY GOD WHAT THE- HUUH- RTX DINO?”

This was the beginning of something amazing. And playing Astrobot on PS5, the ending blew my mind, PlayStation history all wrapped up:)

I loved this as a kid. I never understood that it's just a demo. For me it was an awesome game.

I feel like a lot of kids couldn't appreciate how impressive this was on account of the nightmares it gave them.

I was 6 when we got the first Playstation... This thing was so scary to me back then, I couldn't start it up unless my older sister was with me, it was the music and the blackness around the dino that made it for me. I still feel the chill in my spine as I did 15 years ago... Childhood awesomeness! Unfortunately I've lost the original demo disc :(

Here after finishing Astro's Playroom

I remember being amazed at this on the screen with my new PS1, Christmas day evening, 1995. I used to get my games from a mail order magazine. I'd get the Playstation magazine for the demo discs on the front as well. Damn, they were good times.

I mean if your machine is used just to render one dino then it's a great tech demo but that's a far cry from having an actual game.

@@CeleryMan666 That's true, but if you look at the Final Fantasy games or Zelda games at the time - they were able to cram a lot in for the size. I think restrictions encourage creativity sometimes. Worth checking out Gamehut on here

My childhood! It's here! Man, demo discs had good music back in the day.

To have heard the music as a 8 year old in 1997 and be legit freaked out......this was one of those embrace the darkness/embrace your shadow moments.......then in 2016 when I started watching Naruto Shippuden and came across orichimarus lair with Sasuke in it........suddenly I was completely transported back to this dark experience......at times the music still makes my hair rise with goosebumps

I still remeber being amazed when i saw this demo for the first tine .... we have gone a long way since then 😂

When I first saw this demo wayyyy back in the day, I could only dream that we had this level of graphics consistently throughout an entire game lol

Fredbear Animates how is it not a spoiler. The whole point of this game is to have a nostalgia trip. From 1994 till 2020. Ps icons between that time are shown in the game. When you see some icons ingame it gives you a nice suprise feeling and a nostalgia trip. For you telling us that the Tech Dino is also ingame that magical moment is now gone bc it can not suprise you know. So yeah in my opinion a Spoiler bc its one of the least characters you would suspect to be in the game.

Damn. In the late 90s sometime, here in Turkey, I remember seing this at a video games store. It was at a southern, coastal resort town, but still terrified me. Part of that vibe is the forrboding music I think.

I think another reason is just the black, endless abyss. Something about it is creepy, especially with the horrific music and realistic trex

I remember myself and my mate being absolutely blown away by this demo some time back in the mid-1990s. His parents bought him a PS for Christmas, and one day they were gone out and he knew where they'd hidden all the Xmas presents, he took it and set it up and we had a quick play with it before putting it away again.

This got into my recommendations and I got flooded with nostalgia. I only had two games and some demo discs and on one of those was this T-Rex. I loved it. The music is so simple yet great.

My mom presented me PlayStation on 1996 New Year Eve. I was awed.

When I was a kid when it opened its mouth I used to make silly conversations like it was talking 🤣🤣🤣

I was 10 when I booted up the Dino tech demo and at the time it was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen

This dino finally found fortune and fame casting for Super Mario Oddysey 20 years later

I had this exact demo disk! I haven't heard this music in over 20 years! wow

Most of the people don't know that this demo changed the whole gaming industry. Its the first thing that Sony showed to the game developers before releasing the first PlayStation console and developers watch it and left speachless for a while.

oh my GOD, this damn fucking dinosaur gave me genuine nightmares when i was 4yo. no joke, i had dreams where i was chased by it around the house while crying and screaming, all the while the ambient music played. it''s almost surreal to see it here 20 years later, i still have some of the ps1 demo discs

Ngl i kinda feel bad for him he spent 26 years to come fighting a small robot just to end up losing the fight and having both of his eyes highly damaged at the end of the fight

To be honest.. this is actually kind of scary. Its just the way the dinosaur comes out of darkness in the void

Jurassic park and Dino Crisis do a great job capturing the appearance of Tyrannosaurus. Great video.

Its always strange seeing thing like this that may look dated now but were impressive at the time, be it this or the Money for Nothing video; it really puts how far technology has come into perspective

I’m sure I played the arcade version of this at a kids play area when I was around 4-5 ish (so 2004). Nostalgia!
