Dining Room Table Part 2

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video I build the arched rails that join the lower section of the leg assembly for my dining table. I use a technique called bent form lamination to make the curved pieces. This is done my gluing thin strips of wood together and then pressing them over a form as the glue cures. I build a mold out of MDF using a master template. I place the mold and lamination strips in a vacuum bag to create even constant pressure over the form. Lastly, I square the arched rails, cross-cut them to arc length, rip them on the table saw, and use the Festool Domino to join the arched rails to the legs.
I felt completely comfortable and safe ripping the arched rails to width using the table saw. I rehearsed the cut multiple time prior to even raising the blade for the cut. I also made sure I had the proper guide and feed mechanisms to maintain pressure against the rip fence and table saw top. If you ever feel unsafe about tool operation you should listen to your intuition and not proceed until the appropriate safety measures are taken.

    AlabamaWoodworker, no, Thank You! These are some of the best woodworking videos out there. I watch a lot of this type of content (in lieu of having cable), and your channel has quickly jumped to the top of my list of subs that I get exited about when a new video is posted. Here is to hoping you get the subs your video quality and talent deserves.

    A highly intricate design & very technical process all well realised. A lot of preparation went into this ( not to mention your rehearsals as you pointed out). A vacuum pump & bag is not within the realm of most folks as the cost is quite prohibitive. You chose quite a challenging task as this gorgeous table is dare I say more of an architectural furniture design rather than traditional. However I have to say your hard labour paid dividends. I have watched this from the beginning & will continue to follow to see the outcome which I am sure will not disappoint given the work & time invested. Wish you well all the way & look forward to next instalment. Kind regards.

    ToolsConsumables Thank you for the kind words. Thus is definitely an intermediate level build but I've been wanting this type of challenge for a while and figured what better medium to share this experience than KZread. Furthermore, explaining the process makes me reflect on my methodology and logic. Yes, your right. A vacuum pump and bag system is out of the price range for most woodworkers.

Your thoroughness with operation, and willingness to buy the good or great quality tools and accessories to complete the task safely and "easily" is admirable. A lot of thinking throughout these processes and most of them culminated with 'gut check' moments. I mean, you only get one chance to do the glue up right, rip it width on the table saw or plunge into the finished lamination. And there's nothing better than everything fitting perfectly together. Nice work and enjoyable video.

    One thing you may consider doing in the future is using your mold for supporting the bent laminated piece while doing your mortise joints with the Domino. This would require you to make a ramp to support the Domino, but it would guarantee that everything would work out correctly. The clamping method you're using isn't the best, as it will cause deformation of the arc - to a greater or lesser extent, depending how much pressure the clamp is exerting.

  • @AlabamaWoodworker

    @AlabamaWoodworker

    7 жыл бұрын

    Marty Schlosser Thanks Marty. I thought of that but found it to be unnecessary. Watch the video again and you'll notice that I use a back stop that the arch is being pushed against. The clamp is actually there to prevent deformation in the upward direction as I pushed forward because the arch tended to want to bow up. Thanks for the tip. I may decide to do that in the future.
