    They weren't too different sounding but I think I liked the original pickup a bit more. And the original pickguard was cooler IMO.

    +MaggaraMarine But you didn't hear the original pickups... The pickups in the 'before' bits is a Nordstrand. Bit weird, since the Nordstrand is a more expensive pickup iirc. At least better, to my ears as well! And yes, tort all the way.

    @unopepito06 - I love the tone of the Nordy too. I noticed the improvement over the stock MIJ pickup right away. The Dimarzio is not as pretty on it's own, but it really grabs it's place in the mix. To me, the Dimarzio means I'm gong to hear myself when it gets loud, it has great presence. Not as mellow/vintage, but a classic in your face P bass tone. I'm keeping it in there.

    I've got a 1979 (I think?) Kramer aluminum neck bass, with a DiMarzio Model P on it. I love it. With an adjustment of the tone knob, you can get a vintage mellow sound, or crank it up to get a more trebly sound. And the individual pole piece adjustment is a bit more elegant than moving whole sections of the pickup up and down for that drawbridge effect.

  • @tedbrookins
    @tedbrookins11 жыл бұрын

    Greatness, Ed!! I thoroughly enjoy the sound of both, but to my ears and to my internal RTA, The Dimarzio has a slightly more warm, sweet, and harmonically even tone. That additional to the hot output makes onboard passive distortion a viable option. The adjustable poles are also mmmmm. Yeah, so the Dim' run is a few cents flat, no biggie. Thank you!

  • @eekleefeld

    A fun modification that can be done with the Model P: It's a 4-conductor pickup, so you can wire it to a switch between series/parallel modes. Series is the standard P-Bass wiring. Going to parallel cuts the output, but makes it more trebly, kind of Rickenbacker-ish. It's great for slapping and pick-style.

    @joelb79 - Yes, I do love the NP-1! So far, the Dimarzio is staying in the bass... I like the aggressiveness and the midrange emphasis, but mostly I'm too lazy to change it back!

    Dimarzios were clearer and sweeter sounding to my ears. I prefer them. Some will prefer the more expensive pickup, as it's hard to admit a cheaper one can be better, especially if you've paid for the expensive ones. Mind you, I bet the original Japanese pickups were nice and were probably only removed because they were Japanese, not because they were inferior. Good demo! :)

    I actually prefer the Nordstrand above the Dimarzio, though the Dimarzio is good as well, it really got the mid you mentioned in the comments, as usual, thank you Ed, your videos are awesome as usual.

  • @BassWhispererTV
    @BassWhispererTV13 жыл бұрын

    @tetsusixx - The std Fenders are pretty similar to the Nordys, classic vintage tone. The Dimarzios have a definite mid bump that makes them cut a bit more. They punch through a heavy mix a little better, but of course with your amp eq, you can accomplish a similar effect.

  • @BassWhispererTV
    @BassWhispererTV13 жыл бұрын

    @TableWolfMusic - There is no need to rout to put this pickup in. And... it is possible to use the pickup and the pre-wired harness with your own pickguard, you'll just have to remove it from the one they supply. That's what I did after the review. I kept the pickup, but used my old pickguard. Dimarzio also makes lots of J pickups for the bridge position, I suggest getting a split coil or stack humbucker so it's quiet.

  • @BassWhispererTV
    @BassWhispererTV13 жыл бұрын

    @AirplaiTv - The best thing is to experiment for yourself. Some people like them real close, others screw them all the way down into the body. You get different sounds each way. The most important thing is to try to balance them so one side is not significantly louder than the other. If you tend to play hard, don't put them that close to the string. If you want to play lighter, closer is good.

  • @eekleefeld
    @eekleefeld11 жыл бұрын

    I bought a used bass that had a Model P in it already. It's brighter and a bit harsher than a standard Fender Precision Bass - in a very good way, when you start using the tone knob. With the tone knob rolled down maybe halfway, you get very close to the classic Precision sound again. You can then roll the tone back up, for a harder rock or funk sounds, or you can go further down for a smooth jazz or Motown feel. Bottom line: Great pickup. You get everything from a P-Bass, plus even more.

It was 1984 Japanese made, creme body, tort guard, maple neck. Really nice sounding bass and very lightweight. And I really dig the sound of DiMarzio pup, it´s gonna be on my next Precision. I have Dimarzio Model p in one of my basses and it is more midrangy than most pups and the ceramic magnets give it a more edgy tone. Also when I install my pups I mount them on solid maple blocks of wood. I makes a subtle difference and they will not move. I also like the Seymour Duncan Sb3s for a high output pup. They have a little more treble and less mids than the model p.

    The Di Marzio sounds similar to the p'up in my Westone Concord 1 bass, Ceramic magnet and similar D.C. Resistance, although the Concord is Medium Scale and the p'up placement is nearer the Bridge, like a Musicman. Ceramic magnets get a bad rap because of being cheaper, but the Di Marzio P & J p'ups have a great sound.

    Ed, I just got a Lakland Bob Glaub PJ with the Neo-punch pickups. They sound great but are too bright/aggressive/modern for what I want from this bass. How does the Model P and NP4 compare with these Hansons? I'm thinking of a PJ set with a NJ4SE bridge pickup, but might go with a Fralin or Lollar P. I'd love to know your thoughts...this bass will be wearing flats for sure.

    I'm sure there will be some Nordstrand NP-1 fans out there with a grin on their face, but I thought both the Dimarzio Model P and NP-1 pickups sounded stellar. The NP-1 has a sizzle on the top end that other P pickups do not have, from my experience.

    Hey Judd I recommend rubbing alcohol, higher isopropyl content is better but I'm using 70% atm and it's fine. Soak some into the middle area of a folded piece of J cloth or similar (⅓ sheet strip torn and folded) Put your bass up on a stand, wrap the moistened cloth around one string at a time (at the pickup end where there's space to get under) then pinching and twisting cloth slightly run up and down entire string lengths a few times til you hear squeaks. When all strings are done, give all of them ten or so really good twangs, pinching and twanging against the fretboard whilst also fretting different intervals up the neck. Regular degreasing your string windings like this will make them last ages and you'll hear them brightening during the twanging process. Leave to evaporate and dry fully for a few more mins and you're good to go!

    This DiMarzio pickups are good enough for their price, SD, bartolinis, norstrands are much more expensive. I do think that some are better to my ears, but the price difference is too much. I love that slap tone. And do not like the Marcus Miller/Mark King tone. The slap tone with a jazz bass that I like is Larry Graham's. I prefer the tones with precision or humbucker pickups that Bernard Edwards (precision and Sting Ray) and the bassist from Casiopea (YAMAHA BB) had, and hated when they changed to jazz style pickups. Sometimes it depends on the context, but most of the time I hate midscooped-too bright kind of tones.

    @KetterBaroni Part 2 I don't have any head suggestions(sorry). But i do know a few basses that will give you some more "growl" Fender jazz- This is one of the greatest bass EVER and can do anything you want(IMO) MM Sterling- Loads of growl(youtube search tool bass cover, and watch "remiiiiii"'s videos, you'll see one in action) MM Stingray- more lowend then the sterling, but still a classic This is all my opinion, do your research before buying a guitar and play them at your local music store

    Yeah, it will work with other P pickups, maybe not with a set of Js.
