Welcome to Bass WhispererTv, the source for great-sounding bass gear demos, from one of the world's leading bass educators, and performers - Ed Friedland. Ed is the author of many well-known bass books, as well as hundreds of articles, and gear reviews for magazines like Bass Player, Bass Guitar, Guitar World, Bass Magazine, Bass Gear Magazine, and Jazz Times. Ed's playing career covers the spectrum from Acoustic Jazz to Honky Tonk, Hard Rock to Classical, Blues to Broadway Shows, and for the past 5 years, touring worldwide with the Grammy-winning band, The Mavericks.
The Bass Whisperer knows the questions people have about gear, and aims to address those in each video. The goal is always to present whatever is being shown with minimal tonal interference, with a focus on the piece of gear, not virtuosity. Simple licks repeated over and over again let you HEAR the differences between settings, even the subtle ones. The focus on the gear, not the player. But every now and then...

This Is the best managing e string ... without distortion tight sound. At home Is very nonsense playing more for of light cabs. The gr head has top defined sound with effective undistorted regulations. The Cab sound Is pretty tight...if you like warm sound Is not for you. Perfect for slapping.
I just hear chuck rainey
That's the nicest looking non-Fender headstock I've seen on a non-Fender. Cool basses. I've wanted a Jazz Bass with a 3rd pickup by the neck for some time. I think a J-Bass with a proper neck pickup would sound righteous, and 3-pickup bass would be fun. Has anyone out there done such a modification?
You did a great job saming them. Proof they can sound alike. Great review. I have both and think they are really different at their best voicings.
Great review. Thank you.
Thank you very much! This tutorial is really helpful! I would love to see how to use this with other effects, like octave or chorus.
I always liked GB product. Quality builds (IMO) and they always sound great, which is just a BIT important 😅
Just leaving this here, as everyone seems to sing LaBella's praises. In my experience they are wildly inconsistent, and in a pack there is always something funky (even though my sample size is fairly small). I'm saying this for both bass and guitar strings. A strange untraceable buzz, one string that's much more quiet than the rest, a string with peculiar length compared to the others, etc. I tried 3 packs in total, will stick to other manufacturers. They seem as if there ways much handwork included in making them, but the manufacturer didn't really care too much.
I bought two...the only complain are the blinding leds.

Just bought one!
Best amp!!!!
Sounds remarkably like a D6 Clavi on its AB pickups
Excellent video. I bought a Tribute when it arrived it had scratches over the entire back and sides. It should have never left the factory. But the playability and sound were excellent. I sent it back and now have the opportunity to go for either the American or the Tribute. Sounds like you are not feeling / hearing a lot of difference in the two, is the American version worth the high price? Please let me know, really need help deciding. Thanks!
You have three. 😢. I have zero. I need three.
Sweet bridge pickup!
M2500 has more bass ! l2500 more mediums !
Howdy Ed - I hope you're well. Please could I ask what Nordstrand pickup you had in your '88 MIJ? Still learning from your books (Carvin days).
la basswood ne sonne pas...
Beautiful playing man
Wow, qué tono, espectacular !
That jazz bridge pickup still sounds good.
Cool technology.
Is the neck of the baseball bat variety or is it slimmer?
Does the optical pick-up, pick up a bunch of stray noise? the tone is amazing?
Great playing and helpful info! Thanks Ed!
Very interesting
I switched from Elixir to Labella deep talking bass. They sound a little brighter than the low tension strings. My Fender pj bass with maple fretboard was just a little too bright. The Labellas solved that problem.
Fantastic playing. Can hear the Lucky Thompson influence in Kevin's tone!
A title and chord structure reference giant steps -- fun fact!!!
Great demo! How is the tuning stability? I need a good live bass. The OMG mode sounds like it would be able to replace my EB-0. Awesome playing. Love the flats!
Well done!!!
Ed, this is great! Thanks for sharing and keep on plowing in this track!
Sounds great
Ok, maybe I should learn this tune.
Great!❤
Thanks, Ed! Super cool. A while back, I ordered a G&L CLF research L-1000; asked for set up with light tension flats, they were out of stock, so, went to your site, found a mention of LaBella 760… flats; enjoying having this P-flat zone member in the family! Thanks again! (Been recording lots of 1910 German double bass, I don’t gig with, now need baby bass, ouch! Lol)…
ED!!!! Hooray! (meanwhile, this work by you three is EXQUISITE --- just saying). carry on and have a nice day. :)
smiles confirm, playing the drums is the most fun
Great playing- swings like mad. I'm actually trying to learn that tune- peace: D. Webb
There are several versions of the tune. This is the Joe Pass/NHOP version.
Absolutely wonderful interplay between you three 😊🙌
Fantastic, Ed! Love that tone, man 😊🙌
<3
Great tone, and playing sounds like it would really cut through in the mix. After hearing you play that Bongo Ed it makes me want to go & grab one . Not everyone pulls out that Bongo tone the way you have done here, great job ! 🧐😅
The low tensions are better to me!
I've always loved this bass. It's the thinnest neck I've seen on any 6 string bass. Most of them are a little wide for my taste. But this GVB1006 is just thin enough and perfect for my hand. BUT....damn, I wish Ibanez can do more different colors, though. I would buy it immediately if it's Red/wine/natural/brown/ or blue'ish. To me, I just hate "yellow" or ugly yellow'ish "Amber." This is why I haven't bought it yet. Lol. However, if I see that Ibanez will NOT add more color options, then I'll have no choice but buying it. Then, I'll immediately sand it and change to my taste (red wine or dark-brown wood stained). 😜
Yo Ed! Long time fan from London England, Love your stuff! Next time you’re in New York you should head out to massapequa and check out the New York Bass Works shop, that guy is a master luthier if there ever was one.
sounds like shit. bad playing also.
you're bald!!!
Jaco on a ripper … why?! Lol
