Two issues….height…and will the concrete floor support the weight?

For added strength, would add at least another 2x6 in each of those large gaps under the tank.. from front to back.. Each third of the tank will hold roughly 250 gallons? So. Ballpark it at 250 x 10 with gravel and rocks? Each third weighs as much as a small car or truck. Don't need sagging plywood to cause a leak one day. (even from the weight stretching screw holes..)

I have added extra bracing to it since the video was made. Better to have overkill than not enough.

When you move just take the glass and build a new tank.

I would go with the 36”. The can always be removed if you move and wood, well the that can be redone with minimal cost compared to all glass. Concrete would be fine I’m sure the basement is 4-6” thick maybe more depending where u live plus rebar strength. Go Big! Big is better. Lol.

I have been going back and forth on this driving myself crazy the past two days. I will most likely go the 36" height. Mainly because I want a nice look to the finished tank and don't want it to look crunched vertically. Building of the actual tank itself will begin Monday morning with vids to follow.

Your floor is gonna be fine. 30” tall is best for maintenance anyways.

As far as flooring you will be just fine. Just inspect the concrete for cracks prior to setting tank. I would go 30 myself. All depends If and when you decide to move

I think I’m too far down the road with it now but I ended up going with the 36 inch height. Hopefully it works out.

I am starting a very similar build in a couple months for Africans. I have thought about many of the same things. I talked to several ppl who have big tanks and they advised against 36” tall bc it makes maintaining a pain since your arm would not be able to reach the bottom. I am 6”10 so not as concerned about that but still something to think about

I agree when it comes to the maintenance aspect. Since this will be an in the wall tank it will still be a PITA due to the 4ft width in getting to the front area of the tank if necessary. All of that being said, if I set it up like I did my 300…which is the plan, there will be little to no maintenance at all. I will use large “grabbers” I have, and pvc pipe tools I make for this application. I am leaning towards the 30” height but we’ll see.

36” tall would be awesome and you can always disassemble it in a way you can reassemble it. With the concrete you should look into what the building code was for your county in the year it was built. There’s a standard and the county should have a record of it. Hope that helps.

Thanks on the concrete idea. As for the tank unfortunately, it will be glued together with wood glue, and then fiberglass over all of the seams and corners so there will be no taking it apart, unfortunately. I will have to think it through over the weekend.

For the tank height, I had a 6 x 3 foot tank built years ago and it was 2.5 foot tall. That's a pretty deep tank. Hard to reach the bottom, I was always worried I would fall in. You could use a large sump to make up for the extra water volume. For the concrete, the footings are under the walls, so if you are able to place the tank along the wall, it would probably have more support. I'm assuming you will only have one viewing panel. Or you could look up some structural engineering formula to calculate the load on the floor based on the weight of materials and water.

I’m not worried about water volume so much, just want to make sure I have enough height, especially with the viewing windows since I will have to have X amount of wood surrounding it that it will glue onto. I think even at 30 inches it should be fine still. I plan to have the front glass and also on the left side of the tank will also be glass as that will be an end wall.
