Digital vs Tube Amps: Can You Actually Hear the Difference?

In this video I present two different mixes - one using a tube amp and the other a digital amp sim on two panned DI guitar takes. I thought this would make for an interesting debate - since we guitarists always claim to be able to hear the natural differences between digital and analogue; however, how much noticeable is it really within the context of a mix? The mixes are identical as well as the guitar processing - the only thing changing is the tube amp head or the digital amp sim head. The IR, balance and amp settings on both are the exact same in both mixes.

most of these comparison vids claiming tube amps are no longer needed are done with HIGH-gain setting. To me, differences are more notable in edge-of-breakup or relatively low gain settings. tube amps are still more dynamic. immediate (no latency) , warmer, less predictable (i'd call it more Organic), most of all "unique" - each one has its OWN voice.

I still love real amps. For me it’s not even about the sound of a real amp vs modellers, it’s the fact that you know you’re playing something real. It’s inspiring in that sense. The guitar -> real amp response is immediate and a better playing experience than modellers. I agree with you about high gain - it’s less noticeable in that instance which is a modellers and which is an amp.
Second one, definitely. Simulations are becoming better and better, thats true, but still they dont sound alive enough

Correct! Natural top end that’s much smoother in my opinion.
Question if your favorite guitarist. Came out and played a cheap digital rig. Would they still be your favorite. Or do you feel the equipment is what makes them your favorite?

In my opinion the rig is never as important as the playing. I’d rather hear Slash through a beginners amp and a cheap guitar, than someone who can’t play but has the best gear on the planet (whatever that is). My favourite guitarists would still be my favourite despite the gear. Equipment is always secondary to talent and skill.
