In this video I review and demonstrate the PRS MT15 tube amplifier head in 2023 - giving a fresh perspective on the product. I thought this review would be insightful since many competitive amplifiers, amp pedals, preamps and digital modellers have been released since then. How does the PRS MT15 hold up against the new competition? Let's find out!
In this video, I also do a comparison tone test 'in the mix' between the PRS MT15 and the Neural DSP Fortin NTS Suite. This is to see how a tube amplifier competes with a digital plugin within a mix. I also compare the clean channel of the PRS MT15 with the Universal Audio Dream '65 as a tone comparison from an amp pedal perspective.

    I can’t wait to see the first guy show up to jam asking what he can plug his modeler into and what is the Wi-Fi password. Leave the beer go get your amp!

    Still love amps - nothing will beat the playing experience of the real deal. I heard that you can use modellers without the Wi-Fi though?

    The clean channel is amazing. Mark Tremonti himself wanted it to not be an afterthought like many high gain amps (I've heard a lot the the Peavey 6505's clean channel leaves a lot to be desired). But the lead channel I preferred to a Mesa Boogie. Digital has come a long way, for example Rob Chapman mistook a Kemper profile for a real tube amp in a blind taste test. On paper it is the way to go, BUT I had a Mesa Boogie Mark 5:35 which had 3 amp voicings per channel and I was forever fiddling with it to find a sound i was satisfied with, and that was 6 different settings, let alone the DOZENS with digital modelling/profiling. The MT15 has only one sound which blew me away, and I very quickly found a sound I was happy with and through my Mesa Boogie Cabclone, that'll easily plug directly into the PA and have the convenience of digital.

    Thanks for your insights using the amp! Clean channel is great. Perfect pedal platform. Agree that the downside to modelling is option paralysis. The experience itself of playing a real amp in a room will always beat digital modelling in my opinion. Not so much in sound, but the experience in itself. I think both real and digital have their place, and I’m an advocate of using both personally.

    I agree it doesn't have a lot of density in the low mids. I wonder if a revv G3 pedal in the clean channel would tighten it up

    Interesting idea! The bass response and low mids in the clean channel are very present in comparison. I just bought the KRS Vesta preamp, so I might just test that on the clean channel to see if the chugs are any better.

    I've just purchased an MT15 and one thing is it doesn't lack low end. I'm playing guitars with EMG's through a Zilla Fatboy 2x12 with Vintage 30s. And to be honest? It sounds even better than my Peavey 6505, and that's my favourite sounding, well was. And in my opinion if anyone is in the market for a small amp, the MT15 is the one, especially for the price. I certainly wouldn't buy an Engl over it. P.S there is no tube shortage, i can still get Toobz from Hotrox here in the UK. And the so called "Toob shortage" was never a thing, it was started by KZreadrs, no one else.

    Through a cab I'm sure it's a world of difference in sound. For me personally, as someone who plays through a load box direct into my MacBook Pro, the low end and low mids are lacking - that's just my experience after hundreds of hours of playing through the MT15. I'm glad you're happy with it though and thanks for commenting.

    Use a different, or better quality, IR. If you’re recording straight into a DAW, you would typically not want all the low end anyway, so that’s actually not a downside IMO. I recently went from tubes back to digital to downsize and that only lasted a couple of months. I agree digital has come a long way and sounds amazing, but when you play into a real amp, there isn’t any comparison. Yes, the argument can be made that the final product in a full mix, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. I totally agree with that. The experience of playing a real tube amp is much different than with digital amp sims, though. You play different and get inspired in different ways when you feel the amp respond to your playing. That is what digital will never be able to fully recreate, no matter how low latency gets.

    Can you explain about footswich disengaging changes made when switching between channels I'm confused.

  • @SeanBennettGuitar

    Sorry, I’m confused what you mean? If you mean the foot switch disengaging the channel switching functionality on the amp itself (rhythm/lead switch), then this does happen when the foot switch is inserted into the back of the amp.

    What would you buy instead, a Mesa V:25? Imho there's no better option than an mt15 for its price... If I had the money I'd get a Mesa V:25 or a mk IV

    The MT15 is pretty unbeatable in terms of price, but I’d probably just buy a slightly more expensive clean amp and use pedals only for overdrive/distortion - similar to what Tosin from Animals as Leaders does. I’d personally rather go for an amp that does one thing very well.

    @@SeanBennettGuitar the problem here is not finding the expensive clean amp then, but finding a good od/distortion that sounds like an amp. Find me a Mesa IV distortion in a box and I'll give you my sister.

    Unless your playing live , why do people even use anything bigger than a combo amp , i have a mt15 but i can barely turn it past like a 3 and its shakimg my apt and my neighbors complain start banging on the wall , as a at home guitar player im jusr like i guess if i ever play in a band , dunno starting to feel like i might sell mine. But at the same time i do like knowing that if i ever did have the opportunity to jam at a small venue i for sure could with a 600$ amp at least thats i think how much it was when i bought it about two years ago , i put pedals on it and not sure if its the wattage or power chord problem but there is a fair amount of noise also if im playing close to it , i dont mess with noise gates or anything like that to me if the amp cant sound amazing on its own its not worth it plain and simple.

    I use a Suhr Reactive Load IR so that I can play the amp in my headphones at an attenuated level. Great for recording. I've not used the MT15 through a speaker cab in over a year. To be honest mine is pretty quiet and doesn't really need a noise gate, but I've heard other people say similar things.

    At 8.22 Sean says that he preferred the clean sound to the lead sound? How can that be, he hadn't played the lead channel yet?? He clearly already had pre conceived ideas about this amp hence why he concluded the way he did. Not a great review.

    All digital? Give up guitar amps for digital synths? I remember in the 70's that 'SS amps will replace tubes, they're just better'. That's like a kid with a Casio Keyboard asking me why I have a Grans Piano.

    I get what you’re saying. A tube amp through a cabinet will always have that punch and feeling of pushing air. The instantaneous feedback, dynamic response and randomness of a tube amp etc. I love playing through tube amps. It’s just weighing up the pros and cons. Your right in that a digital modellers will only ever be a fake recreation of an amp, and it’s response won’t be the same. But the other side of the equation is reliability and convenience. I hate lugging cabs to gigs for example, and here in the UK I’ve not seen many cabs on stage recently - everything’s going digital. Planning on playing and recording tube heads into my load box (straight into my laptop) at home, but using digital modellers live I think. Best of both worlds.

  • @kennethc2466

    @kennethc2466

    @@SeanBennettGuitar I agree that it is far more convent to record with DSP plugins, modelers, etc. But that's just it, convenient. Not better, or the same. Definitely not more reliable, as no DSP amp is as old as my '94 5151. Also, my drummer gets a good laugh when guitarists talk about 'lugging' a cab and head, with a guitar on their back...in one trip, and minutes of setup. "everything’s going digital." I seem to remember that 'all guitar amps will be SS. It's the future'...in the 70's. I just can't muster the laziness required to put convenience, over the EXPERIENCE. Life is too damn short.

  • @SeanBennettGuitar

    @SeanBennettGuitar

    11 ай бұрын

    @@kennethc2466 it’s not just ‘laziness’ though - most venues and live setups that I gig at don’t permit loud volumes on stage. Most venues also have sound limiters. The sound has to be controlled at the gigs I do and everyone has in-ears. Of course, the experience of playing the real deal is completely unparalleled. Don’t get me wrong, I love a tube amp just as much as everyone else. I also completely agree that digital modellers are just for convenience sake. I would never say that digital modellers are sonically superior to tube amps or could match the feel.
