Thank you Nikki for taking the time to let me know. For the most part "the internet is silent" in response to the things I put out, so your encouragement makes a difference and I really appreciate it!

Wow, a tutorial with commentary and not just a speed sketch! Thank you so much! I'm actually interested in the brushes you're using. If you could let us know where you got them, or if they're custom ones you made yourself, it would be great. Thank you again!

Cheers Sofia! The main brush is from a old (8+yrs?) brush pack from Goro Fujita. I had been looking for it and tried to get in touch with Goro but no luck. Several people in the comments here asked about it and your message made me look again. I FOUND IT! You can download the brush pack here: digitalbrushes.tumblr.com/post/77170748921/goro-fujita-photoshop-brushes-download-here

You got me hyped to make a portrait with this excellent tutorial :D I have a question! What is your approach when you are doing a portrait of a photo from the face of someone, but the picture has low quality, do you improvise and make your own interpretation using your style (a caricature for example) or do you try as hard as you can to make as close as possible from the original photo? I'm facing this problem right now and I could use your tip. That would be great! And also, these brushes that you use in the video, you made them by yourself or you got from somewhere?

  • @DorianIten

Hi Guilherme, glad you like the tutorial :) I think in your situation it depends a lot on what your end goal is. You will end up with very different results if you choose a caricature style or if you copy a photo. To improve a bad photo successfully requires a lot of practice and understanding. If you feel overwhelmed and are more comfortable with a caricature, maybe do the caricature. If you're curious to see how well you can compensate for a less-than-great reference photo, try to push for it. To earn the "improving-superpower", practice from life (best) or from excellent photos. About the brushes, I've made many to understand Photoshop's brush engine, but the ones I use now mostly come from different brush packs I've come across. Kyle Webster has some great selections at gumroad.com/a/581710963. Build your own set of personal favorites!

Hi Dorian! Thank you for taking the time to answer me :D I really appreciated your insights on the matter, and I'll practice a lot to try to make as realistic as I can. I have some understanding but my main difficult when I try to make a portrait is to blend, I don't know if I use the hardness on 100% or 0% or some in between, I get really confused when I blend with varied value and the result doesn't come out as good as expected. The opacity is another thing that I'm not sure how to use the values properly so I mostly improvise. I'll check it out the brushes on the website, build my own brushes it's going to be somewhat hard since I haven't any experiences with traditional art but I'll give it a shot!

Hey there! That's the built-in HUD Color Picker at 3:23. Here is an explanation: (scroll down to "pick a color while painting") helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/choosing-colors.html The color wheel in the top right is a plugin called Coolorus (coolorus.com)

do you paint with a cintiq or some other screen tablet? Or did you use a blank tablet like a Wacom intuos pro? Id really love to get a Wacom Mobile Studio Pro 16" i7 but I don't have 3000$ to spend haha 😣 That's like my dream

Hey Salman! I believe it was in a brush pack from Goro Fujita that I got probably around 10 years ago... I've looked for the brush pack online but all the links I have found are broken. The file is goros_brushes.abr. I'll try to get in touch with Goro and see if I can share this brush or if the original pack is still available somewhere. If you end up finding it, please let us know!

salman shahzad I actually have a variety of brushes that I found useful and compiled them into one abr. I think it's just a bunch of individual brushes from other people's packs that I've downloaded in the past. just kinds compiling my 1-3fav brushes from a pack and adding them to my own. I THINK I can share it with you because none of the cost money. It's simply that I won't be able to give the artists credit because it's been years of random packs and I don't know which packs any of them belong to. I'll do it when I wake up. it's 6am and I gotta go to bed.
