For me, the problem with digital notes is that studying through a screen makes me very tired very fast, unlike paper notes. Paper notes work better for me, but each person is different and has their own methods. Love your videos :)

I would say this is advance technique. I think his point is that from here you can easily chop it into flash cards and make it searchable. The problem I face in my masters program is that I am now facing a lot of more information being thrown at me that I need to process a lot faster than in my undergraduate classes. So I need to short cut the whole notetaking process as much as possible and spend more time learning. Old way, condensing notes by writing summary notes at least once. New way from original notes break it into digital flash cards and use focus on anki. If something anki doesn’t make sense, search old notes to see how it fits. Also this allow more time for supplemental material to come in. You’re still putting a lot time of time to study but you’re now filling holes in understanding versus just rewriting notes. also also allows you to review flash cards wherever you are at the right time and no less. It’s scary to do something different but needs necessitate change and for someone like me who’s handling a full time masters program in Engineering and Computer Science, and two separate jobs/complex projects that takes up 30++ hours all of which requires me to being physically there. Yea I have to be focus and very time disciplined. This coming from the guy who love physical books, loving the feel of turning pages, and the scent of old books.

I feel the same. I personally take all my notes on mu laptop as it's easier for me to type and to add pictures or schemes. Then i re-read my notes to erase the information that is not relevant and i rearange everything to make sure everuthing is clear. Then i print all my notes and i underline and study through them. It works perfectly for me because it allows me to make perfect notes (as i can type fast so i don't leave any info out and i can add pictures to make everything clearer) and then to study i just print it

I love my tecnology, but I also use paper when it's time to study. I need to write to fix information in my brain so I first read and highlight from my Ipad the notes/book, then write the essential parts on paper (like schemes) and then use my grapich tablet to "repeat" by writing very fast and ugly key words and then I'll repeat (active recall) typing on the keyboard very fast. The paper schemes then will be useful for review day. I've found this method to work for me.

For these 2 years in med uni I learnt that there's no wrong way of studying or way of writing notes, all methods are good as soon as they help at least one person to understand the material (the only wrong methong is to procrastinate all year and learn everything for a day). Also taking paper notes, I think on this way, help in one type of disciplines and digital notes in others, even no notes help. I see this in me-I don't like to write in anatomy, when I see it,I immediately understand it (okay, maybe sometimes I add like a summary),biochemistry in pictures and some little explanation is bomb and physiology-writing and imagination hahah. Summary: It doesn't matter how you learnt something,it matters that you did it,it worked for you and you enjoyed the process of learning the particular thing. No work=no results P.S. Happy and calm celebrations!

I think writting done notes on paper really helps in storing information. However, the amount of material and content you receive in university is a lot. Its nearly impossible to sit down and make proper notes like high school. So students then tend to move to digital note taking which makes the process a bit fast.

Especially as a law student, the digital notes for my readings helps me to work efficiently and stops there being 10 pages of notes from a reading. I made handwritten notes for years. YEARS. Not during lectures but during my study time as well. But this year it felt like it was too much. I was running short on time and writing was time-consuming, not to mention the awful hand cramps I got when trying to cram studying for my midterm into a few days. So I was forced to just type my notes since I had no time and then found out it was AMAZING. Less time, looks a lot neater, and it's very easy to share with my friends or access from any device. You can even easily search for keywords!! Now I just have empty notebooks lying around :))

You’re correct that digital note taking is more efficient but I think handwriting notes taught you how to filter what was important to write down thus not just typing everything verbatim. Otherwise a person who went straight to digital note taking will zone out the material and end up with lots of information but no real association with the material. I’ve been guilty of this where I had accidentally typing my conversation with my roommate while listening to a lecture.

Consider instead of condensing, just use abbreviations of key words. So let's say you do this for 5 pages, then try to do recall using only the abbreviations. You will miss a lot. Add a few more notes and abbreviations you need so you can get through it. You always keep your original long version as a back-up key to double check yourself.

I spent my first year of uni experimenting. I started handwriting everything, and typing up summaries, but found that since everything that was said was important I was missing information. I then switched to typing during the lectures and writing out a condensed version (ideally within 24 hours) so I still got the benefit of handwriting info, but I found with readings and assignments, I got weeks behind in writing it out. For the past two years I have typed my notes, and also typed my summaries, and I've found it works for me. Especially since for some of my courses, we wouldn't find out the purpose of the lectures until the last one in a chunk, so I really just needed to write down everything that was said so I could later go through and figure out what was important!

Thanks for clearing this out. I felt that this explanation completes the video prior to this one. I really think at different times, different subjects, the techniques used vary and it also depends on the person. I hate looking at a screen for a long time and that is why notes work for me. I have also been in courses when the content is so massive that note taking simply does not work, and honestly typing also took too much time, I simply would underline/digitally highlight the key things and flip through the pages to read them before tests and it made the studying process really fast. I am still trying other things like reviewing past summary notes 5 to 10 minutes every other day to see how this works on long term memory. Different things work at different times.

@@carolinakim1517 agree it being so intentional with your focus. I usually doing several things including revisions, mind mapping etc depending on what’s needed and if open note or closed notes. My background,I finished my first quarter of my full time masters, worked two jobs that are project management and was teaching college kids how to creat android development. The master program was a massive information dump, with slides very dense in material with expectations to keep implement it concepts in math and programming. Ended with all A and A+. What worked was focusing on the right stuff and strict time management. So looking to implement this video ideas to help free up more time

I think the main thing is to be able to recall things and learn them. If you write on paper or on a ipad, it all comes down to the fact how well you are able to grasp it. And it only comes with multiple revision, not just one time writing. So digital or traditional note making, it's upto you how much time you are giving to read those notes again and again and again.

Love the discussion about the different types of notes you’ve taken over the years. The way you structure your notes in Notion has been a ‘template’ for me and made a huge difference. Thank you Nasir! Merry Christmas and a happy new year.

After a lot of Notions videos back in the past I now understand how powerful it is so thank you. Being in a degree way easier in term of quantity of information, I think I can switch from laptop to notebook for note taking in lectures. But in the same time, the search and access options of digital notes is a no brainer for post lectures studies. Thank you for that video, it will probably make my sophomore year way easier in term of organization!

I think if u can't rewatch lectures and they are only available once then typing them is good and then going a=back and writing them to understand the information is better since u wanna be able to capture everything however if ur able to rewatch them at ur own pace then writing them makes more sense

Loved your video 🤩 I would like to know please how do you sync Notion and Notability? I keep going between these two apps and I just can’t decide which one to use. I wish Notion had the option of using apple pen and editing pdf in the app. Do you still use Notability or have you swapped entirely to Notion? Thank you so much 🙏🏼 Happy Holidays ⭐️

Best of both worlds is handwritten digital notes. You have the search-ability and flexibility of adding images or pictures, but get that brain processing of writing by hand. I like to use the notability app on an ipad. But I can totally understand that it might get inefficient when you have no time so whatever fits your situation best.

I have been going to a tech school these last two years of high school for medical assisting to get my foot in the door for the medical field. My school introduced me to a note-taking style that has helped me tremendously and all there is to it is a print out of the lecture and then writing down what my teacher says that is either not in the notes or what would be important on the tests. To revise I would go through the powerpoint over and over through out the week and then there would also be a study guide now obviously when i get to college there won't be study guides but I think i am going to turn my lectures and notes into quizlet questions and sets to revise. We will see when I get to premed this fall but if anyone has any tips definitely let me know :)))

Really interesting video. Quite beneficial and useful! I would like to mention two aspects that for me make handwritten notes useful/needed: 1. I studied computer science in university and this required lots of math related subjects. I prefer to use handwritten notes when it comes to solving math problems. 2. Photographic memory is the foundation for me. I have taken most of my exams thanks to it. I have found that it works better for me when being used in combination with handwritten notes. For some reason I find it easier to visualise it in my head. 3. If you use iPad + Pencil for handwritten notes you can still have the search ability and accessibility covered. That being said I prefer to type my notes when it comes to reading non fiction books where I want to keep a list of quotes and references. I also prefer to type my notes when it comes to subjects involving lots of power point presentations and pdf files.

Hi kharma , mmm u always talking about note taking but i wanna know how u study them ? i also use notion to take notes , but when I going to study them it's real hard to memoeris them but when it's come to hand written notes or digital hand written notes , they are very easy to study and we can also hight-light them underline them or do anything what we need when we are study but notion doesn't have that feature , so for me i had to changed my digital note taking method, now i am using onenote because we can write any thing on it. so what is your opinion about this?

The think about productivity is to make sure that you keep moving. It might be that you are not really good at it; that is ok. The point is to make sure that you can keep moving forward. As you do this, experience with be attained and then you will have earned the right of mastery.

I use the native Apple notes app because it can scan through all pictures for text, your handwritten notes. It has replaced my notability app because of functionality (minus the microphone feature which I don’t really care about). On top of that it is tightly integrated to my Apple ecosystem so the search is not as slow as notion.
